Abstract

This research that concerns managers' career progression in Indonesia was carried out in sixteen companies. It is intended to analyze the differences between female and male managers' career progression, by using human capital theory, family power theory, self-selection, industry differences, and also to examine the possibilities about discrimination. The research samples are managers who have been working at least for five years and have been geographically transferred (among cities) to promote their career. The method of sample determination was performed by purposive sampling. The data were obtained by interviews and distributing questionnaires directly and by mail. The respondents consisted of 40 female managers and 114 male managers, with a response rate of 34%. Statistical data processing was conducted by using hierarchial and full regression. The result of the analysis about managers' career progression in Indonesia show that female managers are lagged behind male managers in geographic mobility, but female managers are more advanced than male managers in salary progression and promotion. Discrimination doesn't take role in managers' career progression in Indonesia. Female managers who want to advance in career, have to be better in education than male managers’ education level. Keywords: career progression, human capital theory, family power theory, self-selection, industry differences

Led by foreign banks operating in Indonesia, many banks have switched their mainbusiness activities from corporate banking business to individual customer banking activities. This is due to the deteriorating general economic condition in Indonesia at the present time. Individual customer’s base operation for banking communities proved to be suitable and giving good returns. However, as many banks operating in the same basis, competition among banks has mounted considerably. One must be able to achieve trust and loyalty from their valued customers. Abstract

Scott (2000) explained patterns of earnings management as taking a bath and income minimization. Taking a bath can be made during periods of organizational stress or reorganization, including the hiring of a new CEO. If a firm must report a loss, management may feel compelled to report a large one. Consequently, it will write off assets, provide for expected future costs, and generally clear of decks. This will enhance the probability of future reported profits. Income minimization is similar to taking a bath, but fewer extremes. A politically visible firm may choose patterns during periods of high profitability. Policies that suggest income minimization include rapid write-offs of capital assets and intangibles, expensing of advertising and R&D expenditures. The objective of this study is to investigate which pattern of earnings management chosen by management during economic crisis in Indonesia. Therefore, there are differences on earnings management between before the economic crisis and during the economic crisis in Indonesia. To test the hypothesis of this study, data are collected from Jakarta Stock Exchange for manufacturing companies. There are 27 companies. The result of this study suggests that management is most likely to make income decreasing to taking a bath. Keywords: earnings management, economic crisis, taking a bath, and income minimization.

Abstract

This article is the conceptual view of goal setting theory and effects of goal setting on individual performance. Goal setting is recognized, and is a major theory of work motivation. Difficult goals have consistently been shown to lead to higher levels of performance than easy goals. If there is no commitment, a goal can have no motivational effect. Goals are central to current treatments of work motivation, and goal commitment is a necessary condition for difficult goals to result in higher task performance. Keywords : goals, goal-setting theory, performance

Abstract

The objective of research is to fi nd out the determinant factor of Student Entrepreneurship Intention inSebelas Maret University (UNS) and how such the factors interrelated, so that it is expected that from thisresearch there will be found further development of entrepreneurship education program toward the creationof entrepreneur from the campus that in turn will encourage the nation’s progress and competitiveness. Thenumber of sample was determined by individual faculties consisting of 35 respondents, with the total sample of315 respondents, so that it met the data feasibility minimum criteria with structural equation model (SEM).The result of research shows that the subjective norm (family or friend), positive attitude to entrepreneurshipand UNS’s institutional support are the determinant factors supporting the UNS’s student intention to haveentrepreneurship. The implication of research in the future is that there should be classifi cation among thebusiness and non-business students; and geographical coverage expansion between the university withinindustrial area and that far from industrial area. Keywords: Subjective norm, attitude, intention, having entrepreneurship, students

Abstract

This paper tries to examine the impact of trade liberalization on the Indonesian macroeconomy. The analysis was accomplished by employing the INDORANI Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model. INDORANI is a CGE model of the Indonesian economy developed by the Inter University Study Center on Economics of the Gadjah Mada University that has had relationship with the IMPACT PROJECT, Monash University, Australia since the early of 1997. The model is static in nature and focuses on the real-side of the economy and explicitly divides Indonesia into two regions, rural and urban. This study found that trade liberalization in Indonesia would have a positive effect on the Indonesian macroeconomy. We also found that the majority of the simulation long run effects would not be different from the short run effects. Both in the long run and the short run, the trade liberalization would have positive effects on economic growth. In the employment side, the increasing employment in the urban area would be more than in the rural area. From the stability side, the trade liberalization would decrease consumers price index and investment price index. From the redistribution side, the trade liberalization would increase income of capital and landowner, but decrease the income of labor. In the sector side, the trade liberalization would increase value added (except for manufactured product which is based on natural resources), export, and employment. Generally, domestic price in nine sectors examined would decrease, except in the mining sector. The importof rice, another plant, forestry, fishery and husbandry, mining and services sector would decrease, but for the other sectors. Keywords: trade liberalization, INDORANI Computable General Equilibrium, macroeconomy, sector
