Abstract

As an enabler component for renewable energy integration, power electronics (PE) technology in smart grid system is one of the most important issues of development the electrification, decentralization and information-technology/operation-technology (IT/OT) digitization within the electrical energy transmission and distribution systems. The arrangement of PE may different along the feeder either for grid-connected photovoltaic (PV), wind turbine, fuel cells, wave energy system and battery storage unit, respectively.This is due to the electric voltage that might need to be converted from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) and vice versa. For that reason, this paper proposed a concept of advanced PE as an integrated arrangement of several AC/DC/AC-and DC/AC- converters in such ways that support thepreviously mentioned grid-connected hybrid renewable energy sources and distributed generators (DGs) along the distribution feeder. Additionally, for the system that supported by battery storage unit, then this hybrid smart grid concept might become the answer for future utility needs.

Abstract

The differential phase shifter is an interesting four-port passive microwave network composed of two separate lines, the main line and the reference line, and providing stable phase difference between the two output signals over the specified bandwidth of interest. The most common differential phase shifter is the coupled-line Schiffman phase shifter. In this paper, a novel 90 degrees differential microstrip phase shifter configuration employing a half wavelength transmission line loaded with three open stubs is presented, the proposed design could achieve excellent performance with low phase variation over a wide bandwidth compared to the standard Schiffman phase shifter. The simulated results accomplished with the use of CST Microwave Studio and advanced design system (ADS), were found to be in good agreement and have shown that the proposed loaded-stub phase shifter achieved less than 1.1 dB insertion loss, greater than 13 dB return loss and constant 90±5 degrees phase shift over an 89 percent bandwidth.

Abstract

The recursive-least-squares (RLS) algorithm was introduced as an alternative to LMS algorithm with enhanced performance. Computational complexity and instability in updating the autocolleltion matrix are some of the drawbacks of the RLS algorithm that were among the reasons for the intrduction of the second-order recursive inverse (RI) adaptive algorithm. The 2nd order RI adaptive algorithm suffered from low convergence rate in certain scenarios that required a relatively small initial step-size. In this paper, we propose a newsecond-order RI algorithm that projects the input signal to a new domain namely discrete-wavelet-transform (DWT) as pre step before performing the algorithm. This transformation overcomes the low convergence rate of the second-order RI algorithm by reducing the self-correlation of the input signal in the mentioned scenatios. Expeirments are conducted using the noise cancellation setting. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared to those of the RI, original second-order RI and RLS algorithms in different Gaussian and impulsive noise environments. Simulations demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm in terms of convergence rate comparedto those algorithms.

Abstract

The objective of this project is to design a high frequency signal injection method for sensorless control of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. Generally, the PMSM drives control requires the appearance of speed and positon sensor to measure the motor speed hence to feedback the information for variable speed drives operation. The usage of the sensor will increase the size, cost, extra hardwire and feedback devices. Therefore, there is motivation to eliminate this type of sensor by injecting high frequency signal and utilizing the electrical parameter from the motor so that the speed and positon of rotor can be estimated. The proposed position and speed sensorless control method using high frequency signal injection together with all the power electronic circuit are modelled using Simulink. PMSM sensorless driveis simulated and the results are analyzed in terms of speed, torque and stator current response without load disturbance but under the specification of varying speed, forward to reverse operation, reverse to forward operation and step change in reference speed. The results show that the signal injection method performs well during start-up and low speed operation.

Abstract

The face-recognition system is among the most effective pattern recognition and image analysis techniques. This technique has met great attention from academic and industrial fields because of its extensive use in detecting the identity of individuals for monitoring systems, security and many other practical fields. In this paper, an effective method of face recognition was proposed. Ten person's faces images were selected from ORL dataset, for each person (42) image with total of (420) images as dataset. Features are extracted using principle component analysis PCA to reduce the dimensionality of the face images. Four models where created, the first one was trained using feed forward back propagation learning (FFBBL) with 40 features, the second was trained using 50 features with FFBBL, the third was trained using the same features but using Elman Neural Network. For each person (24) image used as training set for the neural networks, while the remaining images used as testing set. The results showed that the proposed method was effective and highly accurate. FFBBL give accuracy of (98.33,97.14) with (40, 50) features respectively, while Elman gives (98.33, 98.80) for with (40, 50) features respectively.

Abstract

Unlike 3-phase squirrel cage induction motor, starting-up of 3-phase wound rotor counter part can be improved by adding an external resistance to the rotor circuit.Thus, leads to reduce starting current and increase starting torque. In this paper two controllers for 3-phase wound rotor induction motor have been proposed include conventional proportional integral derivative (PID)  controller and the other based on artificial neural network (NARMA-L2). A comparison between these controllers has been conducted. It has been shown that starting torque of the motor has been improved, when utilizing the neural network controller compared to the conventional counter  part. It should be noted that MATLAB/SIMULINK has been used to implement both controllers.

Abstract

During software maintenance, software systems need to be modified by adding or modifying source code. These changes are required to fix errors or adopt new requirements raised by stakeholders or market place. Identifying thetargeted piece of code for refactoring purposes is considered a real challenge for software developers. The whole process of refactoring mainly relies on software developers’ skills and intuition. In this paper, a deep learning algorithm is used to develop a refactoring prediction model for highlighting the classes that require refactoring. More specifically, the gated recurrent unit algorithm is used with proposed pre-processing steps for refactoring predictionat the class level. The effectiveness of the proposed model is evaluated usinga very common dataset of 7 open source java projects. The experiments are conducted before and after balancing the dataset to investigate the influence of data sampling on the performance of the prediction model. The experimental analysis reveals a promising result in the field of code refactoring prediction

Abstract

One of the most promising mechanisms in the field of security and information safety is authentication based on palm vein. The main reasons that vein palm becomes an authentication method is because of its distinctive privacy, as it is difficult to manipulate or change its results, because of the location of the vein within the palm. With the use of this technology, it has become easy to maintain data from unauthorized access and unwanted persons. In this work proposed model are suggested that contain four stages to reach the results: in the first stage is the pre-processing stage where histogram equation was used to enhance the image and the properties are shown, the second stage is the extracting the properties where, Gabor filter and 2-discrete wavelet filters are suggested for features extraction, where it is considered one of the most important filters used to extract the features, as well as in the third stage "PCA" are used for data or features reduction, because of its advantages in analyzing the features and reducing the spacing between them. As for the last stage, the Euclidean distance used to measure the spacing. The results were acceptable and convincing, since the similarity ratio 96.2%. These results were obtained after several tests and using the Gabor filter with 2D-discrete wavelet transform and principal component analysis (PCA), I got the best results.

Abstract

White light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) with quantum dots (QDs) and phosphor have pulled in huge consideration because of their incredible shading rendering capacity. In the bundling procedure, a QDs film and a phosphor silicone layer will in general be isolated for lessening the reabsorption misfortunes and keeping the QDs surface molecules in a good condition. This examination explored the bundling succession of QDs and phosphor layers to the optical and warm exhibitions of WLEDs. The emitted optical power and PL spectra were estimated and dissected, while an infrared warm imager was utilized to reenact and approve tentatively the temperature fields. The results reveal that at 60 mA, WLEDs with green QDs-on-phosphor type accomplished lumen output (LO) of 1578 lm, with shading rendering record (CRI) of Ra = 60, while the red QDs-on-phosphor type WLEDs exhibited lower LO of 1000 lm, with Ra = 82. In addition, the QDs-onphosphor type WLEDs generated less warmth than the other, and as a result, the most noteworthy temperature in this packaged type was lower than the other. Additionally, its temperature contrast can arrive at 12.3°C. Along these lines, regarding bundling arrangement, the QDs-on-phosphor type is an ideal bundling design to better the optical productivity and shading rendering capacity, as well as lower gadget temperature.

Abstract

Energy is a key component in the overall growth of every nation. Insufficient energy delivery hinders political growth, restricts social growth, limits economic growth, and negatively affects the standard of living of citizens, bothin urban and rural areas. Sufficient energy delivery increases food production, improves the standards of living of citizens, improves healthcare and enhancements in other human services, enhances industrial output, provides effective and efficient transportation not forgetting adequate shelter to the citizens of the nation. Currently, there is a significant level of deficiency in Nigeria’s energy sector. This study seeks to address this issue by analysing cost implications of conventional energy source and solar energy source. This study brings to focus the payback period of a solar powered home and the return on investment that might accrue during this time to the residential home owners. Furthermore, the best cost-effective load sharing option for residential owners considering two energy sources is also obtained.
