Abstract

In recent years, facial recognition has been a major problem in the field of computer vision, which has attracted lots of interest in previous years because of its use in different applications by different domains and image analysis. Which is based on the extraction of facial descriptors, it is a very important step in facial recognition. In this article, we compared robust methods (SIFT, PCA-SIFT, ASIFT and SURF) to extract relevant facial information with different facial posture variations (open and unopened mouth, glasses and no glasses, open and closed eyes). The simulation results show that the detector (SURF) is better than others at finding the similarity descriptor and calculation time. Our method is based on the normalization of vector descriptors and combined with the RANSAC algorithm to cancel outliers in order to calculate the Hessian matrix with the objective of reducing the calculation time. To validate our experience, we tested four facial images databases containing several modifications. The results of the simulation show that our method is more efficient than other detectors in terms of speed of recognition and determination of similar points between two images of the same face, one belonging to the base of the text and the other one to the base driven by different modifications. This method, which can be applied on a mobile platform to analyze the content of simple images, for example, to detect driver fatigue, human-machine interaction, human-robot. Using descriptors with properties important for good accuracy and real-time response.

Abstract

Adaptation of online learning among Malaysian universities during the Covid-19 pandemic stressed the dire need to tackle digital divide. Lack of empirical evidence, generic highlights on accessibility to technologies and lack of focus given on gaps in skills, usage and outcomes obscures the extent of digital divide among Malaysian students. Data was collected from 356 undergraduate students of private and public universities to identify the differences in second and third levels of digital divide, where the former entails divide in terms of digital skills and digital usage, then the latter concerns online learning outcomes between students from both types of Malaysian universities. Descriptive results unveiled the persistence of digital divide in the second and the third level among both public and private university students, with exception of students from public universities showing an advanced grasp of digital skills. Path analysis have also highlighted that having digital skills would encourage digital usage. Although digital usage equips students with resources and support for their learning attainment, at the same it also creates digital distraction, which diverts students from acquiring online learning fulfilment.

Abstract

With increasing penetration of renewable energies into modern power systems, supporting grid required ancillary services become a challenging problem. Wind turbines, as one of the main sources of renewable energies, has some inherit features which can be employed to support ancillary services for utility grids. One of the key requirements of grid operators is active power control for frequency regulation. But this requirement cannot be addressed with traditional wind turbine controllers as these controllers try to capture maximum of available power while with active power control, the output power should be limited to a predefined (time varying) set-point. Although new methods are introduced for active power control, there is no suitable comparison between them because of lack of a standards and easy to implement tools. In this paper, an extension to well-known open source reference open-source controller (ROSCO) controller based on the national renewable energy laboratory (NREL) 5 mega watt (MW) fatigue, aerodynamics, structures, and turbulence (FAST) model is proposed to support active power control. With this extension, in addition to active power control support the resulted mechanical loads on various turbine parts can be evaluated

Abstract

Recognizing and classifying diseases in guava is crucial for managing farms to keep crops healthy and increase harvest quality. Cultivators face the most severe challenges when it comes to recognizing and diagnosing guava fruit and leaf illnesses, a task that is nearly impossible to perform manually. This research focuses on developing a robust disease identification model using image data collected locally from guava trees. After data collection, various image processing techniques, including scaling and contrast enhancement, are utilized to make the data more suitable for use. K-means clustering is employed to quickly divide the images into groups, followed by the extraction of important characteristics. Two separate feature ranking approaches, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and least absolute shrinkage selection operator (LASSO), are used to select the best characteristics, identifying the 10 most important attributes. The adaptive boosting (AdaBoost) classifier achieves the highest accuracy among six classifiers for the top seven characteristics indicated by LASSO among the specified features. To enhance the model’s interpretability, two explanation methods, local interpretable model-agnostic explanations (LIME) and shapley additive explanations (SHAP), are employed to illustrate how the classifier reaches its conclusions. This approach not only simplifies disease identification but also clarifies the reasoning behind predictions, opening the door to real-world applications in detecting and preventing dangerous diseases.

Abstract

In recent years, high-power three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) inverters have significantly increased, particularly in the renewable energy sector and industries. These inverters are crucial in applications such as offshore wind farms and high-power motor drives, where reducing switching losses and improving the overall longevity, efficiency, and reliability of inverter systems are key. While conventional space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) has been used to reduce switching losses, it also increases the computational burden in the αβ coordinates. Our study introduces an effective and highly efficient carrier-based discontinuous pulse width modulation (DPWM) method specifically designed for high power factor loads to address this challenge. This approach significantly reduces computational execution time by adding the zero-sequence function into the fundamental signals. The efficiency of our new method is evident in the results: the proposed DPWM has successfully reduced switching losses, leading to a substantial enhancement of system efficiency. Our space vector analysis and simulation results, achieved using MATLAB and PLECS software, further validate the efficiency of our approach. Additionally, experimental results with a small-scale three-phase NPC inverter were conducted to validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed DPWM.

Abstract

This paper presents the evaluation of the safety measures adopted by Ho Technical University (HTU) students in the use of power extension cords in their halls and hostels, along with their safety considerations for properly selecting these cords to avert fire outbreaks or prevent them from becoming a potential fire hazard. Whenever extension cords are utilized inappropriately it can lead to fire or electric shock perils. The assessment of the awareness level of safety practices is yet to be rigorously pursued as an agenda towards extension cord usage in institutions and agencies perceived to be high energy consumers where fire outbreaks occur frequently. A quantitative research approach was adopted, using a questionnaire for data collection. The findings revealed that about 52% of the respondents did not know the current and power ratings and the effects of overloading the extension cord. It was recommended that consumers purchase extension cords that have been endorsed by an autonomous testing laboratory, whereas the university should immediately organize a seminar to educate the staff and students about the use of the extension cord.

Abstract

Technological advancement has spurred financial technology growth, transforming traditional financial operations into digital. Peer-to-peer (P2P) lending is a key fintech solution offering online loans, though it struggles with repayment issues due to customer financial instability. To overcome these challenges, XYZ is a startup that focuses on enhancing the efficiency of collections and communication with customers. XYZ necessitates the implementation of a collection intensity scoring (CIS) model and a prediction model for interaction on recommended communication channels in order to optimize the collection process. This study evaluates the performance of grid search and Bayesian optimization on random forest (RF) classification models and K-nearest neighbors (KNN) regressor prediction models. RF and KNN regressor algorithms optimization are necessary to enhance their performance in CIS classification and channel recommendation prediction. The research stages follow the cross industry standard process-data mining (CRISP-DM) framework, which consists of business understanding, data understanding, data preparation, modeling, and evaluation. The model performance is assessed by accuracy and mean absolute error (MAE). The results of this study show that Bayesian optimization surpasses grid search, enhancing the accuracy of the RF model to 98.34% and reducing the MAE of the KNN regressor model to 0.24530.

Abstract

In this research, water bath sonicator was fabricated to extract bioactive compound of plants material using sound energy (ultrasonic waves) and heater. The bioactive compound, flavonoid, has high sensitivity to temperature and extraction time and previous research stated best treatment with combination of 45˚C and 20 minutes. Therefore, fabricated water bath sonicator was equipped with proportional integral derivative (PID) based temperature controller and timer. Based on a calculation using the Ziegler-Nichols tuning method, Kp, Ki, Kd parameters are 16.59, 0.0279, and 2463.6, respectively. The experimental result shows that the PID controller can perform as design specification with overshoot 1.39%, error steady-state 0.688% and settling time 37.2 minutes. Furthermore, it was proven that the PID controller has contribution to extract more flavonoid.

Abstract

Miniaturization in the telecommunications field is deemed a current challenge and a critical demand in order to improve communication quality between the transmitter and the receiver while avoiding clutter issues. The main objective of this work is to design a miniature interdigital bandpass filter (IBF) using planar technology. The proposed bandpass filter is made up of three equidistant parallel-coupled lines carefully deposited on a small Rogers-5880 substrate possessing a full dimension of 10×10×1.6 mm3, a relative permittivity =2.2, and a loss tangen of 0.0009. The proposed IBF has been designed and simulated using the HFSS software, which is a simulator that studies the electromagnetic behavior of radio frequency structures using cutting-edge finite element solvers. The reached outcomes present good electrical performance in terms of insertion loss , reflection coefficient , voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR), and selectivity, making the proposed IBF suitable for integration in small electronic devices for C-band applications (4 GHz to 8 GHz).

Abstract

The use of smart building environments, along with high-technology image processing and pattern recognition, is discussed within this paper. The study shows that the Canny edge detection algorithm is better than the Sobel operator in the edge clarity, continuity and accuracy in segmenting those edges, posting 92.7% of edge detection accuracy. Incorporating fuzzy logic, the hybrid Hough transform, and sophisticated segmentation techniques, like adaptive simple linear iterative clustering (SLIC) superpixel division, the study advances line detection and feature identification in the images of buildings. The variational autoencoder (VAE) and principal component analysis (PCA) help optimise the feature extraction substantially by retaining more than 93% variance at a lower dimension. In addition, adaptive Otsu thresholding and region-growing segmentation allow improving the segmentation accuracy, resulting in a significant increase in building detection F1 score from 77.3% to 89.6%. Irrespective of the Hough transform issues like noise sensitivity and over-joining, the results suggest computing process ideas that are computationally effective, scalable, and applicable in smart building systems. This study suggests extending the current advancement of hybrid models and incorporating them with the urban planning procedures, energy control, and building security systems.
