Abstract

In m-out-of-n system, if m-out-of-n modules agree, system can report consensus; otherwise, the system fails. On the other hand, in predictive hybrid system if there is no agreement, a history record of previous successful result(s) is used to predict the output. In order to analyze the availability of predictive hybrid redundancy system, Markov modeling is utilized. By using Markov model of the system in steady state, the availability is derived and compared with m-out-of-n system. The results of simulation demonstrated that the availability of predictive hybrid system is higher than m-out-of-n system especially for large m.

Abstract

In this paper, we newly solve wide baseline matching using support vector regression (SVR). High correct ratio initial matches are used to train SVR relationships, obtained by matching large-scale SIFT features and discarding some mismatches by our improved topological filtering scheme; and new matches are searched near the prediction given by trained SVR relationships. Both indoor and outdoor environments image pairs under wide baseline condition are tested, experiment results show that our algorithm automatically gain large numbers of accurate point correspondences.

Abstract

Dental features can be considered as the best candidate feature for post-mortem identification. If ante-mortem data is unavailable, then forensic experts are needed for reducing the search space by creating post-mortem dental profiling. Age is one of important factors in dental profiling. Manual inspection of dental radiographs suffers from two drawbaks, i.e., intraobserver error and interobserver error. This paper proposed a semi-automatic system for age estimation. There are two phases in developing the proposed system, i.e., the modeling phase and the estimation phase. The modeling phase is the stage for deriving an estimation formula based on known data. In this paper, we use data taken from Javanese people. The estimation phase include the process of defining a Region of Interest (ROI), automatic length computation, and age estimation based on the derived modeling formula. Our experiments showed a promising result, i.e., an average absolute error of 5.2 years, compared to application of the Kvaal method to panoramic radiographs from Turkish individuals that yields a difference of more than 12 years.

Abstract

The emergence of new higher education institutions has created the competition in higher education market, and data warehouse can be used as an effective technology tools for increasing competitiveness in the higher education market. Data warehouse produce reliable reports for the institution’s high-level management in short time for faster and better decision making, not only on increasing the admission number of students, but also on the possibility to find extraordinary, unconventional funds for the institution. Efficiency comparison was based on length and amount of processed records, total processed byte, amount of processed tables, time to run query and produced record on OLTP database and data warehouse. Efficiency percentages was measured by the formula for percentage increasing and the average efficiency percentage of 461.801,04% shows that using data warehouse is more powerful and efficient rather than using OLTP database. Data warehouse was modeled based on hypercube which is created by limited high demand reports which usually used by high level management. In every table of fact and dimension fields will be inserted which represent the loading constructive merge where the ETL (Extraction, Transformation and Loading) process is run based on the old and new files.

Abstract

The erection mechanism with movable back hinged bearing is a novel erection mechanism and the form of its moving process is complicated. The novel erection mechanism needs to be extensively tested to prove its value and to ensure it works properly. Kinetic analysis was accomplished and mathematical model of the hydraulic system was acquired. Fuzzy adaptive PID control was adopted for the erection mechanism taking advantage of fuzzy control and PID control. The novel erection mechanism was validated by virtual prototype technology realized by co-simulation method. The mechanical, hydraulic and control models were respectively established in ADAMS, AMESim and Simulink. Experiment was completed on a platform. The results of simulation and experiment indicate that the novel erection mechanism can move based on designed scheme and the control effect of fuzzy adaptive PID control is excellent. The novel erection mechanism has great practical value.

Abstract

Recently, sophisticated segmentation techniques, such as level set method, which using valid numerical calculation methods to process the evolution of the curve by solving linear or nonlinear elliptic equations to divide the image availably, has become being more popular and effective. In Local Binary Fitting (LBF) algorithm, a simple contour is initialized in an image and then the steepest-descent algorithm is employed to constrain it to minimize the fitting energy functional. Hence, the initial position of the contour is difficult or impossible to be well chosen for the final performance. To overcoming this drawback, this work treats the energy fitting problem as a meta-heuristic optimization algorithm and imports a varietal particle swarm optimization (PSO) method into the inner optimization process. The experimental results of segmentations on medical images show that the proposed method is not only effective to both simple and complex medical images with adequate stochastic effects, but also shows the accuracy and high efficiency.

Abstract

In this work, a set of experiments has been conducted using arc discharge Methane decomposition attempting to obtain carbonaceous materials (C-strands) formed between graphite electrodes. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of the fabricated C-strands have been investigated in the presence and absence of two different gases, NO2 and CO2. The results reveal that the current passing through the carbon films increases when the concentrations of gases are increased from 200 to 800 ppm. This phenomenon is a result of conductance changes and can be employed in sensing applications such as gas sensors.

Abstract

Image denoising and improvement are essential processes in many underwater applications. Various scientific studies, including marine science and territorial defence, require underwater exploration. When it occurs underwater, noise power spectral density is inconsistent within a certain range of frequency, and the noise autocorrelation function is not a delta function. Therefore, underwater noise is characterised as coloured noise. In this study, a novel image denoising technique is proposed using discrete wavelet transform with different basis functions and a whitening filter, which converts coloured noise characteristics to white noise prior to the denoising process. Results of the proposed method depend on the following performance measures: peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and mean squared error. The results of different wavelet bases, such as Debauchies, biorthogonal and symlet, indicate that the denoising process that uses a pre-whitening filter produces more prominent images and better PSNR values than other methods.

Abstract

We investigate the validity of the formal expansion method for solving a second order ordinary differential equation raised from an electrical circuit problem. The formal expansion method approximates the exact solution using a series of solutions. An approximate formal expansion solution is a truncated version of this series. In this paper, we confirm using simulations that the approximate formal expansion solution is valid for a specific interval of domain of the free variable. The accuracy of the formal expansion approximation is guaranteed on the time-scale 1.

Abstract

This paper presents a simple technique for performing Batik image retrieval using the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) approach. Two CNN models, i.e. supervised and unsupervised learning approach, are considered to perform end-to-end feature extraction in order to describe the content of Batik image. The distance metrics measure the similarity between the query and target images in database based on the feature generated from CNN architecture. As reported in the experimental section, the proposed supervised CNN model achieves better performance compared to unsupervised CNN in the Batik image retrieval system. In addition, image feature composed from the proposed CNN model yields better performance compared to that of the handcrafted feature descriptor. Yet, it demonstrates the superiority performance of deep learning-based approach in the Batik image retrieval system.
