Abstract

It is debatable that Raffles is seemed to be a Universalist or an imperialist. The first refers to a belief that he is an agent of the spread of Western values to the Eastern. Others claim that he is the Western imperialist to the Eastern. This is caused by the forced values to the Eastern. Raffles issued the reformation of policy because the colonialism of VOC and the government of French-Dutch did not have any humanistic policy. He issued many humanistic policies till the end of his government in Java. One of his policies was the slavery tax. The tax was used specifically to abolish the practice of slavery and to the welfare of people. In other side, Raffles forced people to work in his friend’s land, Alexander Hare who opened the plantation in Banjarmasin. The life of workers was really suffering however his thoughts and his efforts becoming an insight to oppose the heritage of feudalism (slavery). To short, there was a lesson learnt why Raffles’ ideas were failed and came back to the previous structure.

Abstract

This article aims to explain and to prove the maritime life and tradition of the Indonesian society, especially in Jepara during the pre-colonial period, which in turn can be one of means to evoke the maritime spirit of Indonesian society. The glory of maritime kingdom of Jepara, particularly during the reign of Queen Kalinyamat, was mainly supported by big and powerful naval force. However, since the arrival of the West in Indonesia in the 17th century, especially Dutch, the maritime world in the Archipelago declined gradually. Through an extensive literature overview, this paper seeks to discuss several main aspects of city management system of urban Indonesia in late colonial period, based on which it proposes some important research agenda that needs to be carried out to complement our historical comprehension on Indonesian urban history.

Therefore, teacher or lecturer must be creative to deal with this digital generation, for example by developing engaging media. This attempt become more and more important to do especially on history learning since many students considers this subject as dull and meaningless. This research tries to develop an engaging history learning media by using sigil software. The method used in this research is following Sadiman’s model in media development which consist of several stages (1) identification of needs, (2) intention analysis, (3) content development (4) formulating of success measuring instrument, (5) media script writing, (6) validation, (7) revision, and (8) production . From the analysis, it can be inferred that the sigil based e-book with MindMaple content is valid. The percentage of media expert validation is 86%, media expert validation is 85% and small group trial is 96,25%. Therefore this media is feasible to use in the “Technology and Information for History Learning” course. The advantages of this e-book are low cost, easy to use, and engaging.
