Abstract

This study aimed to determine the increase in students’ interest and achievement of science in the 8th graders of SMP Negeri 1 Watampone, Bone Regency Indonesia, when using outdoor activities. This study applied Classroom Action Research (CAR), which consists of two learning cycles following the procedural phase such as planning, implementation, observation phase, and reflection. The sample was taken using a purposive sampling technique class. The data collected included data about the students’ science achievement before the implementation of the action, data about the students’ interest in learning science, data about the students’ science achievement in the cycle I and cycle II, and data on the observations/notes of the teacher in each research cycle. Data were obtained through a questionnaire asking about students’ interest in learning science, students’ achievement result test before the implementation of the action, students’ achievement test in cycle I and cycle II, and student learning observation sheet. Data then analyzed using quantitative and qualitative descriptive analysis techniques. The results showed that there was an increase in students’ achievement, both in cycle I and in cycle II. Students’ mastery level in science materials was in the high category and their readiness, sincerity, and activeness in participating in the learning process were increased. Recommendation and direction for further research are included in the study.

Abstract

The use of instructional media is something that can support the teaching and learning process; therefore, a lecturer must have the ability to create and develop learning media. This study aims to improve student learning outcomes in building physics course by using simulation learning media and models to help students understand thermal comfort material. Making modelling and simulation media is done using MATLAB software. The subjects of this study were physics engineering students who took Building Physics course. At the beginning of the study, students are given material and then in groups discuss thermal contents and then given a pretest test with an average score of 70.27, and for an average grade of 71.3 assignments. At the meeting next week, using the Student-Centered Learning (SCL) method and using problem-based learning in groups, students take temperature measurements in several rooms in the Building at the UNAS Physical Engineering Laboratory. The measurement results show that the room does not have thermal requirements (PERGUB No. 38/2012), so students have the task of conducting experiments using models that have been created by researchers to create learning media to improve comfort in using thermal buildings. Simulation results carried out by students, that is, can produce rooms with thermal conditions at 21-25°C (PERGUB No. 38/2012). This simulation is also able to provide the score of building energy efficiency. After students succeed in conducting the test, the assessment test or posttest is carried out with an average score obtained 80.55, and an average score of 80 assignments. The results of the pretest, assignment 1, assignment 2, and posttest show an increase in students’ scores of 14.6% for the Test and Task Score of 12.20%. Based on the hypothesis test, for both variables showed t-count < t-table and significance < 0.05. It shows there are significant differences in student learning outcomes both test scores and assignment scores before and after using a simulated media. Thus, the system and simulation model designed can be used as learning media that can improve student learning outcomes.

Abstract

The science learning material about Environmental Pollution and Global Warming in Junior High School is very much related to the latest environmental issues. This study aims to examine the relationship between Environmental literacy with thinking skills, actions, and sensitivity to environmental issues through the implementation of Local Environmental Problem Based Learning for Student Worksheets. The survey method was used in this study, followed up by a quasi-experimental design pretest-posttest. Samples of this study were 372 students in three junior high schools located in areas affected by forest fires. Research instruments were in the form of tests, to measure ecological knowledge, and questionnaires that were adapted from the Middle School Environmental Literacy Survey (MSELS), to measure cognitive skills, actions, and sensitivity to the environment. Before being used, questionnaires and tests adapted from MSELS were tested on 35 respondents with a reliability test α = 0.68 and a questionnaire α = 0.88. Correlations between two variables were analyzed using Path-Analysis with AMOS 23 software. The results of the study showed that there was a direct correlation between ecological knowledge and increased thinking skills. Knowledge is indirectly correlated with action (β = 0.01, t = 1.07, p> 0.05) and sensitivity (β = 0.00, t = -0.38, p> 0.05). Knowledge (β = 0.12, t = 10.43, p <0.001) correlates directly to thinking skills and acts as a mediator between knowledge, action, and sensitivity to the environment. The result of the effectiveness test of Local Environment-Problem Based Learning (LE-PBL) student worksheets using the pretest-posttest design showed that LE-PBL is effective in increasing the environmental literacy of students, with N-gain value of 0.2 in the control class and N-gain of 0.4 in the experimental class. The implementation of learning resources in the form of LE-PBL student worksheets strengthens students’ environmental literacy in identifying, analyzing, evaluating, and planning actions and sensitivity to local and global environmental issues.

Abstract

A web-based recitation program has been developed to improve students’ conceptual understanding of some fundamental concepts of fluid mechanics. The program consists of multiple-choices conceptual questions followed by immediate feedback for each option. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the program and whether the program can be used by students without any assistance of instructor. If it is the case, the program could be used by instructor to serve recitation program outside the classroom. To address the objectives, this study employed a non-randomized control group pretest-posttest design involving three groups of students. The first group (E-1) used the program accompanied by teaching assistant, the second group (E-2) used the program by his/herself without assistance, and the third group (C) learned by his/herself without the program. The study involved 73 students enrolling the introductory physics course in physics education department, State University of Malang, as the subject. The effectiveness of the program was analyzed by comparing N-gain scores of the three groups and the responses of the E-1 and E-2 students to the program. Pretest was administered after the three groups of students have learned fluid mechanics through regular lecture sessions, and the posttest was administered after the E-1 and E-2 groups have finished learning with the help of the program. The results showed that the N-gain of group E-1, E-2, and C was 0.51 (upper medium), 0.58 (upper medium), and 0.12 (low), respectively. The ANOVA test showed that the three N-gain values were statistically different (p = 0,000). The LSD post hoc test showed that the N-gain of group C was significantly different from that of group E-1 and E-2 (p=0.000), whereas the N-gain between group E-1 and E-2 was not significantly different (p=0.244). It can be concluded that the web-based recitation program was effective to improve the students’ conceptual understanding of fluid mechanics and can be used equally well with or without direct assistance from instructor or teaching assistant. The students that used the program also gave quite positive responses to the program, that the program could help them to reflect on the appropriateness of their understanding, was easy to use, and had attractive features.

Abstract

This study aims to explore cognitive assessment techniques based on teaching experience. The method in this study uses a descriptive survey with data collection techniques using purposive sampling of tutors who have taught at PKBM for 5 years. The population in this study were PKBM (Pusat Kegiatan Masyarakat or Community Learning Center) tutors in Jakarta at Package A, Package B, and Package C, namely 158 tutors with details as follows; Package A 45 tutors, Package B 53 Tutors, and Package C 60 tutors. Data collection was done by using question forms and data analysis used descriptive translation to obtain an average frequency of learning assessment techniques. The statistical analysis used Confirmatory Factor Analysis, so that it can be seen directly and indirectly. The results showed that the dominant assessment technique used in non-formal science tutors was a written test that averaged 32 times in one semester. A group of tutors with 5 to 10 years of teaching experience using a variety of assessment techniques. Descriptively, it can be said that the use of the frequency spectrum of cognitive assessment techniques is coupled with experienced tutors with a tendency in written tests. In this study, the results show that the preparation of assessment in non-formal education there is an influence between the preparation of the assessment of the implementation of the assessment. So it is necessary to improve tutor assessment preparation.

Abstract

This research was a descriptive case study. The purpose of this research was to describe the student’s ability to interpret the kinematics graph. The subjects of the study were 347 students of class XI science in the even semester of 2018/2019 in Luwu Raya, South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. The research data were obtained from multiple-choice test results using instruments adapted from Test of Understanding Graph – Kinematics 2.6 and the results of in-depth interviews to find out the reasons learners choose answers and casual factors. The results of the study based on descriptive data analysis were 90 students or 25.94% in the low category, and 257 students or 74.06% were in the very low category. These results indicate the ability to interpret the graphs of students were still low, with the average achievement in answering questions on each of the highest indicators was 20.99 % on indicators identifying graphs based on the description. While the lowest average achievement was11.91%, which is the indicator to identify the graph that has a different variable. Base on the qualitative data analysis, the results are students had difficulties in solving the test, as follows: a) the difficulty in distinguishing symbol of the variables on the graph, b) the difficulty in determining the formula for solving test in graphical form, c) to determine when the curve on the graph v-t decreases then the object will move with speed slowed. The factors causing these difficulties are because students did not understand deeply about how to read graphs, how to solve test in graphical form, and did not understand the formula used to solve the test.

Abstract

This research aims to facilitate and assist student learning in finding, gathering and analyzing what is needed to develop spiritual potential, self-control, personality, intelligence, noble character, by using seamless mobile media to get the required help in his life. Integration with guided inquiry learning the values of Islam and science in the phenomenon of natural at millennial students utilize information technology of learning resources available environment. The concurrent triangulation strategy is done by collecting quantitative and qualitative data concurrently, then comparing the two databases related to the presence or absence of convergence, differences, or combination. Based on this multivariate statistic analysis, there are differences in learning outcomes between millennial students who use seamless mobile media and non-seamless mobile media. Efforts to integrate Islamic values and science are realized learning outcomes that are; 1) wisdom of greatness, 2) usefulness in life, 3) artificial projects, 4) written reports, 5) responsibilities, 6) accuracy, 7) curiosity. The results of learning patterns that integrate Islamic values and science using seamless mobile media increase students’ skills, abilities, and knowledge. The millennial students can complete artificial projects and report very well their meaningful learning activities to have gratitude to all who made God’s creation on Earth. Efforts to integrate Islamic values and science essential to develop knowledge and ethical character. In Islam, every human being born in a sacred environment, and education becomes a deciding factor in the quality of a child’s religion by providing learning of meaning to improve the quality of millennial students.

Abstract

Students’ misconceptions have become phenomenon in teaching and learning, especially in chemistry which is considered as difficult subject. The objective of this study is to identify undergraduate student’s misconception profiles related to acid-base concepts in inorganic chemistry. This test was conducted with 15 item three tier multiple choices test. Data were identified descriptively and qualitatively. This test instruments are judged as valid with CVR score of 0,99 and mean of 1,73. Meanwhile, the reliability for this instrument varies for each tier combination; for tier one only, r11 was given reliability score for 0,93; for combination tier one and tier two, r11 score was 0,90, and for combination of all tiers, r11 score was 0,81. The test conducted revealed that average percentage of misconception in this test is 33.31% for all items. The highest misconception profile is 60,61% in item no.6 hard soft acid base concept. This includes 15,15% misconception false positive, 9,09% misconception false negative, and 36.36% specific misconception.

Abstract

One of the essential skills for future science teacher candidates is scientific communication, while the background of sociocultural aspects influences communication which must have a scientific basis. This research aims to analyse the scientific communication skills of prospective science teacher based on sociocultural aspects. Quantitative survey research methods applied in this research, using a questionnaire as a data collection tool. The population in this research were students of natural science education programs at one of the state universities in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia, while the samples are 87 students. The results of this study indicate that the sociocultural aspects of students vary with the characteristics of the area of origin, regional languages, different languages, regional cultures, and different social attitudes. The sociocultural aspects are specified in two levels, which are Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and More Knowledgeable Other (MKO). At the ZPD level, 67% of the students are in the intermediate criteria and 33% in the advanced criteria. While at the MKO level, the criteria are intermediate and advanced, with percentages almost equal to 49% and 51%, respectively. It was concluded that the profile of scientific communication skills of prospective science teacher based on sociocultural aspects was in the intermediate and advanced criteria. Students are indicated to experience “vernacular misconceptions” related to the sociocultural aspects of the use of various languages used in daily communication and writing. The frequency is dominated by the use of regional languages that are not relevant to scientific languages. Further research needs to be carried out on the identification of scientific misconceptions related to sociocultural aspects.

Abstract

The low level of science teacher graduation in the professional teacher program in the last two years has become a severe concern for researchers in higher education. Here we analyze these problems by measuring the Science Process (SP) Skills of science teachers in Indonesia through this program. Data collection procedures are interviews, worksheets, and questionnaires, while data analysis techniques use mixed methods, consist of quantitative and qualitative methods simultaneously. The SP skills data obtained were Observing 76.1%, Proposing Hypothesis 76.4%, Planning an Experiment 60.0%, Utilizing Tools 57.2%, Interpreting 39.4%, Applying Concept 48.1%, and Communicating 18.3%. The lowest percentage is in interpreting skills and communicating skills. Based on the analysis result, the causes are the short time teaching experience and the educational background of science teachers who are not linear with their competence.
