Abstract

Implementation of Principles of Green Chemistry in teaching chemistry can become an essential approach to enhance students’ awareness of the environmental problem. In contrast with the goal of sustainability, chemistry practicum normally deals with chemicals and waste management which contribute to environmental problem. A shift toward more sustainable and economical experiments is essential to maintain the existence of the practicum in the senior high curriculum. Small Scale Chemistry (SSC) practicum is one of the approaches to promote sustainability in chemistry practicum by using smaller scale and safer apparatus. It is expected to produce less waste. It is also safer and more economical chemistry experiment. This research aims to study the integration of principles of green chemistry in chemistry practicum by using SSC experiment. This study investigates two main topics in senior high school chemistry subject: electrochemistry and acid-base indicator. This study has shown the practice of integration of the principles of green chemistry approach into senior high school chemistry practicum through SSC. The experiments demonstrated in this study enable us to integrate Principles of Green Chemistry in terms of preventing waste, using less hazardous chemical, and conducting safer experiments which can be implemented in senior high school chemistry practicum.

Abstract

N-hexane and methanol systen is one example of a binary system that shows the solubility properties of reciprocity. This study aimed to assess the mental model of a n-hexane-methanolbinary system. Interaction at the submicroscopic level between n-hexane and methanol molecules is described in the form of mental model. Penelitian ini menggunakan cloud point method untuk memperoleh data kesetimbangan cair-cair sistem n-heksana-metanol. This study used a cloud point method to obtain data on liquid-liquid equilibrium on the system of n-hexane-methanol. Research data showed the maximum critical temperature (above the consolute temperature) of this system was at 42.95 °C with Xmethanol = 0.475 (P= 715 mmHg). Data from the laboratory observations was representedas a symbolic level in the form of the curve of correlation between mole fraction of methanol with temperature in a phase diagram system of n-hexane-methanol. The curve that was formed was asymmetric. It indicated that the solubility of n-hexane in methanol was relatively small compared to the solubility of methanol in n-hexane. Mental model of the binary system of n-hexane-methanol in four curve areasin the form of visualization of the interaction between n-hexane and methanol molecules through London force. In thermodynamics, each component had the same chemical potential inboth phases at equilibrium state. This study results could have a contribution to form a mental model on the student as the prospective chemistry subject teachers.

Abstract

Many scholars in the teaching of science put forth that the perennial target of science education is to teach the nature of science (NOS), and science textbooks play a crucial role in the teaching of the nature of science (NOS). Understanding the nature of science is said to be effective when both understanding science concepts and doing science. Numerous studies focus on the teaching of NOS. This study investigates the effect of a science content that is prepared in history and philosophy of science (HPS) perspective on the NOS understandings of pre-service science teachers. 34 sophomore pre-service science teachers participated in the study. The quasi-experimental method was used by employing a pre-test, an intervention, and a post-test which is the same as the pre-test. The intervention involved the presentation of science content from the HPS perspective in six weeks long of discussions. Data were collected through a survey that revealed categorical views regarding the characteristics of the NOS. The results showed that the demonstration of atom theories in the HPS perspective gave a positive effect on the pre-service science teachers in understanding the NOS.

Abstract

This work aimed at knowing the improvement of problem-solving and physics concept mastery by using the learning model of Hints and Peer Interaction Learning (HPIL) model. This research used embedded experimental model design, that one class could be used as a sample even though the sample size was less than 30 students. The number of the research sample was 22 students of one of the Senior High Schools in Malang. The instruments used were 25 numbers consisting of five numbers of the essay (problem-solving skill) and 20 numbers of multiple choices items (concept mastery). The data were analyzed by using paired sample t-test. The research results showed that there was an improvement in problem-solving skill from 40.68% to 74.77% and concept mastery from 0.48% to 0.72%. The result of the t-test indicated that the value of SigcountingSigtable (0.00 0.05); therefore, the problem-solving skills and concept mastery before and after the application of the HPIL was significantly different. The problem-solving skills required concept mastery or comprehensive knowledge from factual until metacognitive levels. Thus, teachers need to design suitable learning models to develop this basic knowledge as a foundation for developing problem-solving skills, one of them with HPIL.

Abstract

Developing metacognitive skills is a prominent objective in the education field. Several institutions use the skills to facilitate students’ thinking processes. This study aims to overcome student misconceptions in energetic materials by implementing teaching materials based on metacognitive skills. Several studies have shown that metacognitive skills have played a role in reducing misconceptions through the process of problem-solving in science learning. The subjects of this research are students majoring in chemistry at Universitas Negeri Surabaya, Indonesia. Students’ conception status is determined by the result of a conception test equipped with the Certainty of Response Index. With descriptive analysis techniques, results indicated that students who had the potential misconceptions status at the beginning had experienced self-actualization: (1) the number of students who have “the right concept” is more than those who “do not know the concept” and have “misconceptions,” and (2) the number of students who have status least misconception. Based on the results of the study, the implementation of metacognitive skills-based teaching materials can overcome student misconceptions in energetic material.
