Abstract

This study intended to describe the effectiveness of the GEM-CL learning model selaras Bakar Batu cultural practice on chapter heat and temperature. This type of research was quasi-experiment with pretest and post-test control group design. The study population was all students of class XI IPA SMAN 1 Jayapura. The sampling technique used was simple random sampling. The selected classes were XI IPA-3 as an experimental class and class XI IPA-5 as a control class. Data collection instruments were tests based on higher-order thinking skills and questionnaires to collect students’ responses. Data analysis was done by t-test, N-gain, and effect size for data collecting from test data while data from questionnaires were analyzed by descriptive qualitative analysis. It was concluded that the model is effective to apply in physics learning to preserve students’ conceptual understanding and improve students’ higher-order thinking skills. Further study on GEM-CL to other cultural practices and physics chapter in Indonesia would would strengthen this learning model.

Abstract

The COVID-19 outbreak has made many countries decide to close schools to prevent the spread, including Indonesia. This leads to online distance learning. Furthermore, online distance learning is carried out by teachers suddenly without prior preparation. Therefore, the teachers' Technological, Pedagogical, Content Knowledge (TPACK), and attitude to conduct online distance learning are crucial. Thus, this study intends to identify chemistry teachers’ TPACK and attitude in online distance learning during the COVID-19 outbreak. Purposed-design survey method was used with 109 participants in Java, Indonesia. The data were collected using online questionnaires then analyzed quantitatively using factor analysis and qualitatively based on the teachers’ response to online distance learning during the COVID-19. The questionnaire used consisted of 36 close-ended statements with a Likert scale and 10 open-ended questions to find out challenges and opportunities for implementing chemistry online distance learning. The results show that the teachers try to adapt their way of teaching and assessment by using various technology platforms for online distance learning. The attitude and TPACK of the teachers tend to be positive in responding to online distance learning even though some senior teachers have a negative tendency to the aspects of attitude and technological knowledge. It can be implied that training in the use of various technologies, and enhancement of chemistry teachers’ TPACK skills are needed to produce better online distance learning. These results are expected to provide an overview of the challenges and opportunities of online distance learning in chemistry during or beyond the COVID-19 outbreak.

Abstract

This research aims to produce the scientific approach for science learning using a problem solving model on the topic of heat and temperatureon the junior high school learning outcome. The curriculum used during the study was curriculum 2013 (valid, practical and effective). The development of the learning setfollowed the four-D model which was reduced to three-D model (without dissemination). The study was tested in Class VIIA, VIIB, and VIIC in SMP Negeri 5 Academic Year 2015/2016. The data collection technique employed the validation of the learning set, observation, testing, and questionnaire. The results of study show that the developed learning set has a decent (valid, practical, and effective). The competency in learning outcomes show N-Gain in high level with the average value ranged between 0.80 to 0.86. The impact of learning on three classes were tested by ANOVA on 0.05 significance level to produce F value ?F table, meaning that there is no difference in the impact of learning on threeclasses with consistent value. The student competence skills anddemeanors, the skills of each category showed good and positive response to learning. The research concludes that the scientific approach for science learning using a problem solving model is suitable for learning application (validity, practicality, and effectiveness).By mastery in learning management, the learning objectives can be achieved smoothly.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify and classify the barriers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education around the world. The barriers have been investigated in the intrinsic, extrinsic, and institutional domains by reviewing the literature and related works. In STEM education, the intrinsic barrier focuses on the personality of teacher and student; and extrinsic barrier mainly results from the inadequate and or inappropriate arrangement of infrastructure. Meanwhile, the institutional barrier is specific to curriculum, policy, technology, as well as organizational sustenance in the education field. From the twelve of sixty previous studies in data resources, the obtained percentage of barriers are 38% for intrinsic, 33% for institutional, and 29% for extrinsic, respectively. It has been revealed that these domains have quite a similar percentage, but intrinsic factors came up as the most reliable barrier in STEM education.

Abstract

Business and industrial field need workers who have not only good academic achievement but also the ability of hard skills and soft skills.  In order to prepare students who have a good academic skills, hard skills, soft skills it has to be done in all subjects including chemistry expertise to integrate the competencies of Motorcycle Engineering.  The research design uses One Group Pretest Posttest Design imposed on students in class XI SMK 1 Kedung TSM. Validator assessment results indicate that teaching materials developed very feasible for use in learning chemistry.  The result show that the learning device by using the integrated chemistry materials can increase students understanding of the thermo chemistry material with the acquisition of N-gain is at 0.63 or in the medium category.  Group of high-achieving students have the score of N-gain of 0.65, while the medium-achieving students get 0.63 and low-achieving students get 0.61, all have medium category.  Percentage  of students who passes the mastery learning  if mastery learning (KKM) 75 or reach 87 %.  The percentage of students’ soft skills in at least good criteria is at 87.10 %.  Students gave positive responses  90.71 % towards the learning material that is developed.

Abstract

This research aims to develop science process skills and problem-solving abilities based on outdoor learning in junior high school. This study uses a mixed method design embedded experimental models. Data was performed in the qualitative and quantitative analysis. Qualitative data analysis is used to determine the science process skills while quantitative data analysis is used to determine the increasing problem-solving ability by using normalized gain (N gain) formula. The results show that the science process skills developed at every phase comprise of making observations, formulating hypotheses, experiment, create data, classify and analyze the data, formulating its conclusions, communicate, and apply the concepts and make predictions obtained by the average value of 75.33 in the good category. While the problem-solving ability of students based on outdoor learning also increased by 0.58 in the medium category. The conclusions of this research show that the application of outdoor learning can be teacher use as an alternative to learning, so it is quite effective in developing science process skills and problem-solving abilities.

Abstract

The development of Learners’ Key Competencies (LKCs) is one of the goals of the primary education core curriculum that is currently being used in Thailand. Therefore, learning activities that enhance LKCs are essential for all teachers. The objectives of this research were to develop a Scientific Imagineering (SIG) learning activity through Facebook in enhancing LKC development and to study its effectiveness. A research and development method was used in this study. A total of 30 students of grade 11 which selected using purposive sampling participated in the learning activity. A self-assessment of LKCs form was used to investigate the situation in a physics class, before and after participation in the learning activity. The research results showed that SIG learning activity through Facebook consisted of six steps in the form of Imagine, Study, Design, Develop, Present, and Evaluate. The evaluation results by five experts concerning the suitability of this learning activity indicated that it could be used to enhance LKCs and had great potential to be implemented. Comparing the students’ self-assessment with regard to LKCs, it was clear that there was a significant overall increase (p.05). The comparison of students’ self-assessment to the LKCs for each component also found that the skills of communication, thinking and learning, problem-solving, and technological application increased significantly (p.05). The results of this study support the view that SIG learning activity through Facebook could enhance the LKCs of students.
