Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effect of literacy learning with cultural insight on science learning outcomes and the social attitudes of students in elementary schools. This research was a quasi-experimental study using a non-equivalent post-test only control group design. The population of this study was 140 students, while the sample was selected by random sampling. The number of samples in this study was 100 students who were divided into two classes. The instrument used was a test of learning outcomes in the form of multiple-choices and social attitude questionnaires. Validation of the learning outcomes instrument used content validity with the Gregory test, and item validity used biserial point correlation, the reliability of the test used KR-20, different power, and difficulty level. Meanwhile, validation on social attitude instruments used content validity with the Gregory test, item validity was used product-moment correlation, and test reliability was used KR-20. The data collected were analyzed by Multivariate Analysis of Variance. The results showed that the results of the significance of all three hypotheses are 0,000, which means less than 0.05 (0,000 0.05). So, it can be concluded that there was a positive effect of literacy based on the exploration of science with cultural insights on thematic content mastery and social attitude. The novelty of this research integrates literacy learning with Balinese cultural insight on science learning outcomes and social attitudes.

Abstract

This research aims to develop a web-based performance assessment in Integrated Science course. The research was Research and Development (R D). The expert validation of developed products resulted the average percentage of 3.88 for content category, 3.94 for format category, and 3.78 for language category. Meanwhile, critical thinking skill aspect resulted percentage of 92.20 basic clarification indicators, 90.05 for basic for the decision category, and 94.67 for inference category. Students also responded positively to web-based performance assessment in Integrated Science course.

Abstract

The study aims at finding (1) the effect of project-based learning and problem-based learning on student’s creativity and critical thinking and (2) the difference effect of project-based learning and problem-based learning on student’s creativity and critical thinking. This study is quasi experiment using non-equivalent control-group design. Research population of this study was all classes in eleventh grade of mathematics and natural science program of SMA N 1 Temanggung. The participants were 102 students. This study used three classes as research sample which implemented three different kinds of learning models in respiratory system. XI MIPA 3 was as an experimental group implementing project- based learning and XI MIPA 5 was as an experimental group implementing problem- based learning, while XI MIPA 1 was as control group. Data was collected using two instruments to measure student’s creativity and student’s critical thinking. Data was analysed using t- test, multivariate analysis, and univariate analysis. The results reveal that (1) project-based learning and problem-based learning affect student’s creativity and critical thinking; (2) there is a difference effect of project-based learning and problem- based learning on student’s creativity; and (3) there is no difference effect of project-based learning and problem-based learning on student’s critical thinking.

Abstract

Malaria is a disease caused by parasitic protozoa (Plasmodium) carried by a vector of mosquitoes. There are approximately 100 million regions around the world at risk of malaria. One of the endemic areas of malaria in Indonesia is Papua. Manokwari is one of the districts in West Papua that has a high number of malaria patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate mosquitoes Plasmodium parasites, and malaria in West Manokwari District. The research procedure applied initial survey of the place where malaria vector was captured, capturing malaria vector, general environmental measurement, mosquito species identification, plasmodium examination on mosquito of malaria vector, and plasmodium examination on malaria patient. The total sample obtained from 3 areas was 1550 patients and 496 mosquitos with average numbers up to 150 mosquitos per area.The physical environment, including rainfall, temperature, humidity, altitude, and environmental conditions inside and outside the home greatly affected the incidence of Malaria in Manokwari, West Papua. Malaria is a serious health problem in Indonesia. The physical condition of the environment is the main factor influencing it.The results showed that the type of malaria vector found in West Manokwari region comes from two genera namely Culicidae and Anophelidae. Each malaria vector could carry infections from Plasmodium vivax or Plasmodium falciparum. There are two kinds of Plasmodium parasites that infected humans in Manokwari; Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax.
The Interpreting Ability on Science Kinematics Graphs of Senior High School Students in South Sulawesi, Indonesia

Abstract

This research was a descriptive case study. The purpose of this research was to describe the student’s ability to interpret the kinematics graph. The subjects of the study were 347 students of class XI science in the even semester of 2018/2019 in Luwu Raya, South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. The research data were obtained from multiple-choice test results using instruments adapted from Test of Understanding Graph – Kinematics 2.6 and the results of in-depth interviews to find out the reasons learners choose answers and casual factors. The results of the study based on descriptive data analysis were 90 students or 25.94% in the low category, and 257 students or 74.06% were in the very low category. These results indicate the ability to interpret the graphs of students were still low, with the average achievement in answering questions on each of the highest indicators was 20.99 % on indicators identifying graphs based on the description. While the lowest average achievement was11.91%, which is the indicator to identify the graph that has a different variable. Base on the qualitative data analysis, the results are students had difficulties in solving the test, as follows: a) the difficulty in distinguishing symbol of the variables on the graph, b) the difficulty in determining the formula for solving test in graphical form, c) to determine when the curve on the graph v-t decreases then the object will move with speed slowed. The factors causing these difficulties are because students did not understand deeply about how to read graphs, how to solve test in graphical form, and did not understand the formula used to solve the test.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of science learning integrated with the local potential of wood carving and pottery to the critical thinking skill of class VIII SMP students. This research is a quasi-experimental research (quasi-experiment). The research design uses pretest-posttest control group design. The population in this study is the students of class VIII MTs Negeri Piyungan, while the sample is the students of class VIII A and VIII B MTs Negeri Piyungan. The technique of collecting data in this research is in the form of test. The data collection instrument is a critical thinking skill descriptive test. The data were analyzed using ANOVA test. The results of this study indicate that the learning of science integrated with the local potency of wood carving and pottery have an effect on critical thinking skill of class VIII SMP student. This effect is indicated by a significance of 0.008 (significance 0.05).

Abstract

Teaching materials are one of the supportive facilities in achieving successful learning. This study employed teaching materials characterized by Multiple Representations and Contextual Teaching Learning. This research intended to reveal the understanding of redox concepts taught in grade X. This study was an implementation of the results referring to the 4D (Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate) model. The data collection methods adopted were observation, questionnaire, test, and documentation. The data was analyzed by using the descriptive-qualitative method. The teaching materials have been declared valid, practical, and useful. The users also gave a positive response to the teaching materials. Students’ conceptual understanding was analyzed through each item and indicator. The overall students’ concept mastery was 53.33%, and their understanding of each indicator was 50.214% for interpreting, 77.78% for exemplifying, 53.472% for classifying, 52.78% for guessing,  52.78% for comparing, and 62.5% for explaining.

Abstract

Penelitian bertujuan untuk meningkatkan hasil belajar fisika siswa auditorik dengan mengimplemetasikan pembelajaran fisika berbasis guided inquiry. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) keterlaksanaan pembelajaran berjalan dengan baik sesuai dengan RPP, (2) peningkatan hasil belajar kognitif baik produk maupun proses siswa meningkat dengan baik, dan (3) respons siswa terhadap pembelajaran positif. Berdasarkan hasil temuan dapat disimpulkan bahwa implementasi pembelajaran fisika berbasis guided inquiry dapat meningkatkan hasil belajar siswa auditorik. The aim of this study was to increase learning outcomes by implementing learning physics based on guided inquiry. The results showed that (1) learning process was good in accordance with RPP, (2) the learning outcomes of product and process increase effectively, (3) student respond to learning was positive. According to the findings above it could be conclude that the implementation of learning physics based on guided inquiry is able to increase learning outcomes of auditory learner.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to build creative thinking skills and creative attitude of students through a model of problem-based lectures Environmental Chemistry (PBL) Green Chemistry visionary. Mixed methods research design experimental models embedded with pretest-posttest control group were used in this study, and the differences between assumed initial end-tests as the effects of the treatment. Creative thinking skills measured by the essay tests, non test while the creative attitude is measured from the completed questionnaires consisting of positive and negative statements of markers creative attitude. Data measurement N-gain of creative thinking skills for the control and experimental group were 0.40 and 0.71, while the creative attitude were 0.08 and 0.34. Improved tests of creative thinking skills or creative attitudes were analyzed by t-test. Implementation of research findings indicate environmental chemistry lecture- problems based Green Chemistry vision can improve thinking skills and of creative student.

Abstract

Nature of Science (NOS) is a basic of understandings how science concerns human lives and social development. If the nature of science is a loss in science education and its implementation, the concept of science learning is failed in science education philosophy. Preservice teachers are initial key factors to introduce and implement NOS for those students. This study investigates understandings of nature of the science of preservice science teachers from bachelor study in science education program. Participants are 121 preservice science teachers who enrolled in the second semester in the academic year 2017 from a university in the northeast of Thailand. Questionnaires via Google Forms were used for data collection. Descriptive statistics and qualitative data were provided. Data were analyzed and grouped by level of understandings of NOS. A correlation was also studied for testing different understandings. The findings indicated their understandings to meet the goal of science education, understandings need to embed NOS in curriculum and instruction. Some understandings of participants seem to be not understandable. It needs more discussion and explorations for future enhancement of understandings of NOS through the teacher preparation program.
