Abstract

Lesson Study (LS) activity aims to improve teachers’ professionalism using discovery-based instructional design. Teachers’ professionalism was measured based on communication during the learning process, especially questions and statements from the teachers and students on various topics. Thirty-two high school biology teachers and twelve model teachers involved in this research. The procedures of the LS activity included curriculum review (up to constructing learning objectives); lesson plan making; implementation of lesson plans; communication of the results; and workshop. The research showed that LS activity changed the questioning skills of the teachers and students. Changes in the quality of teachers’ questions and statements were proportionate with the changes in students’ answers quality. The quality of questions and statements affected the teachers’ competencies; also, improved the quality of learning as it facilitated students’ thinking of learning as thinking categories.

Abstract

The explanatory mixed-method was conducted to assess prospective biology teachers’ (PBTs) perceptions on thinking as 21st century skills. Data were collected using a quantitative survey method, and an interview with PBTs from Islamic University. 168 (14 men and 154 women) of 195 PBTs participated in filling out the questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of 24 statements of aspects of critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, metacognition of the 21st century skill. The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and alpha Cronbach tests were used to determine the quality of the instrument. Statistic descriptive, ANOVA, and correlation tests were conducted to analyze the quantitative data. Triangulation was conducted on the results of the interview. The results of the study indicate that (a) most male and female PBTs at Islamic universities have high skills in critical thinking and metacognition; (b) most male and female PBTs at Islamic universities have insufficient skills in problemsolving and creativity skills; (c) the results of this study also showed that there is no relationship between gender and PBTs skills. This study suggested that teachers and education managers in Islamic universities need to apply integrative learning by paying attention to the skills needed by PBTs. Learning applied in classrooms should be based on 21st century skills.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the students’ problem-solving ability in modeling the physics instruction. This study used a mixed method design of embedded experimental models. The results showed a modeling instruction improves problem-solving ability than conventional learning physics. This is because the modeling instruction emphasizes the development of conceptual understanding through modeling that indicated by diagrams, graphs, and images before the student presents the mathematical representation. Modeling instruction facilitates students in constructing knowledge and solving problems through scientific activities. Physics students’ problem solving skills through learning by modeling instruction. The development of problem-solving ability of students after studying physics at modeling the instruction indicated by the development of better identify problems based on the concept , making the representation of the problem , and the evaluation of the solutions and concepts used. Activity modeling instruction is like asking students to give a conceptual explanation of the opinions and answer orally or in writing and giving problems to be grouped based on the concept able to provide another alternative in the assessment of just a paper and pencil test.

Abstract

Student’s critical thinking and their learning result depend on learning design and student’s activity.  Most students use their spare time with playing game.  Students are more challenged by the difficulty in playing game rather than facing the difficulty in understanding the lesson.  This phenomenon is the basic reason of the researchers to develop a game that has the essence of the subject matter, namely Chemistry Board Game (CBG) or we can call it with Al Chemist Knight.  This research aims to develop a suitable digital game based on android system. In this research media was used to improve the cognitive learning and critical thinking. It also has purpose to evaluate the response of learners in learning chemistry through alkane derived compound topic. The development of this game was adapted from the procedure of game development process in mobile 3D presentation.  The collection of evaluation data model applied was pre test and post test in trial class.  The result showed that in the pretest the learning result average was 34.35 with classical target of 5%.  While the posttest learning result average was 80.51 with  classical target of 85%. The  n-gain factor was 0.703.  Based on the result of the students questionnaire data analysis, 3.025 of students responded positively to the implementation of CBG.  A CBG media makes an assessment of critical thinking, in which the indicator of critical thinking which are focusing on questions get 3,1 point, giving arguments get 2.95, asking and answering questions get 3.0, making decision get 3.05, and the average score of critical thinking indicator is 3.025 which belongs to good category. Based on the students’ response questionnaire, we get the average score of 3.3 or 82.5% which is classified in good category.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to categorize and describe the behavior of chemistry education students' metacognitive skills who had a low chemical understanding (low ability) in solving problems. The findings would be the basis of data for the development of instructional design on chemistry topics by utilizing metacognitive skill aspects. The subject of this study was two first-year students of chemical education, academic year 2016/2017 that joined a basic chemistry course at the low-level ability in Universitas Tadulako. Two subjects were picked through networking using a valid test comprehension. The subjects were determined regarding the percentage of low ability which was 87% of 79 students. The profile data of metacognitive skill were obtained through an essay test, think aloud and interview. The earned data were reviewed, grouped, encoded, and examined to see its credibility employing the method and time triangulation. The research found that both students of chemistry education having a low-level of basic chemistry adopted planning skills in solving problems which were the problem identifying, goal determining, and strategy managing. However, both did not use monitoring and evaluating skills.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of the 5E Inquiry Learning Model as compared to the conventional method in enhancing third-grade students’ science achievement using “magnet” as the learning material. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design was employed with the participation of 40 students from two intact Third-grade classes in a primary school in Kuala Kangsar. The experimental group was taught using the 5E Inquiry Learning Model which consists of 5 stages, namely Engagement, Exploration, Explanation, Expansion, Evaluation, while the control group was taught using the teacher-centered conventional method. The science achievement in the learning of “Magnet” was measured using a researcher-developed test consisting of 12 multiple-choice and 8 fill-in-the-blank items. The test has sufficient validity and KR-20 reliability. Analysis of the pretest data indicates that there was no statistically significant difference (t = 1.66, p .05) in the pretest means between the experimental and control groups. Accordingly, an independent samples t-test was used to compare students’ achievement in the posttest. The analysis of the posttest data indicates that the posttest mean in science achievement (16.05) among the group of students who had followed through the 5E Inquiry Learning Model is statistically significantly higher (t = 4.75, p .001) than the corresponding mean (13.15) among the group of students in the control group. Therefore, it can be concluded that the 5E Inquiry Learning Model enhances the learning of science in terms of achievement among the primary students.
