Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of Real Science Mask with QR Code on students' problem-solving skills and scientific literacy. This research is a type of experimental research that uses the Pretest Posttest Control Group Design model. The subjects of this study were students in the Integrated Science Education study program for the academic year 2020/2021 of Universitas Negeri Semarang. The sample from the population was divided into experimental class and control class. The observation instrument used an observation sheet based on the assessment indicators of students' activities during learning. Data analysis in this study used quantitative descriptive analysis, where each average value is described in each aspect of the assessment based on indicators. The results showed that the experimental class that applied the Real Science Mask with QR Code had the highest average score of Problem-Solving skills in the assessment aspect of discussing the suitability of scientific phenomena with a score of 9.4 and scientific literacy on the aspect of student assessment in seeking scientific references with a score of 8.8. The posttest results obtained a t-count value of 8,951 with df = 16, consulted with the t-table value at a significance level of 5%, and df = 16 obtained 2,120. These results indicate that the value of t-count is greater than the t-table value (8,951 2,120) it means that there is a significant difference between the experimental and control classes. Furthermore, the average of these two aspects of the assessment is higher when compared to the control class. These results indicate that the Real Science Mask with QR Code is effective in improving students' problem-solving skills and scientific literacy.

Abstract

The low scientific literacy index of Indonesian students is due to lack of attention to socio-cultural environment. Also, there are still many contents, the context, and processes in chemistry learning that have not been achieved as learning resources for developing the domain of scientific literacy into four main areas. They are science content, competence, or science process, the context of the application of science and attitude. This study intended to develop scientific literacy through ethnoscience pedagogic in chemistry learning. The method of this study was qualitative descriptive with the retrieval of data through direct observation, questionnaires, and interviews. The results of the study showed that the needs of: (1) the curriculum emphasis on the development of chemistry literacy for students; 2) the skills of chemistry lecturers in designing learning programs by using local potential in their respective regions; (3) the early discussion on the material coverage the basic concepts of chemistry; and (4) the emphasis not only on chemistry content but also on context, processes, and attitudes. Thus it can be concluded that the development of scientific literacy needs to be done by focusing on the preparation of future generations of scientific literacy with curriculum content that pays attention to culture and daily life to make it more contextual.

In these lessons, the participants were 160 first grade Japanese middle school students from four classes. They were divided into nine groups each class. The instruments are worksheets to explore students’ initial knowledge about how to clean up wastewater and critical thinking processes. The worksheet consists of the designing solution, and understanding of concepts to identify critical thinking based on purpose and question, selection of information, assumption, and point of view the solution, and implication. Students were asked to design tools to clean up the wastewater. Students were given more than one chance to design the best product for wastewater treatment. The lessons consist of six lessons. The first lesson is the introduction of colloid, solution, and suspension, and discussion about wastewater. The second lesson to the fourth lesson was finding solutions and designing products. The fifth lesson was to watch a video of wastewater treatments in Japan and to optimize the solutions or products. The last lesson was to make a conclusion, to exchange presentations, and to develop discussion. Implementation of STEM education can be seen from the students` solutions, some students used biology or chemistry or physics or combination concept and Mathematics to design solution (technology) for treatment of wastewater. The result showed that the mean score of students` critical thinking skill was 2.82. The students` critical thinking skill was categorized as advanced thinker: 41.6%, practicing thinker: 30,6%, beginning thinker: 25%, and challenged thinker: 2.8%.  And the category for students` critical thinking was practicing thinker.  Practicing thinker is a stage of critical thinking development, they have enough skill in thinking to critique their own plan for systematic practice, and to construct a realistic critique of their powers of thought to solve the contextual problem.

Abstract

Conceptual understanding is often a problem in science learning, and this issue has become the point of science education experts, including in Indonesia. Lately, ten articles in Indonesia and six articles in other countries have discussed the model of the 7E Learning Cycle. It was mentioned that this model is able to increase learners’ conceptual understanding. This research intended to reveal the effectivity of physics learning using the 7E Learning Cycle in improving students’ understanding of temperature and heat concepts. The research design is quasi-experimental with a non-equivalent control group design. The sample was senior high school students. Objective test in the form of multiple choices equipped with reason was employed as the data collection instrument. Based on the data analysis, the value of Effect Size was 0.5 and belonged to the medium category. In other words, the use of the 7E Learning Cycle model is sufficient to improve the learners’ understanding of temperature and heat concepts. This could be seen from the success of the learning process that integrates the whole seven stages with the seven indicators of conceptual understanding in detail. Thus, the 7E Learning Cycle could be effectively applied and can increase the students’ conceptual understanding.
