In the 21st century, students from all levels of education face extreme global competition, technology that is driven by information, and rapid media-saturation. These dramatic accelerational challenges are the reason why the educational system must prepare students with the skills needed in the era of globalization. Based on a document published by The Board of National Education Standards in 2010 on the importance of establishing a framework for 21st-century education in Indonesia, the necessity of appropriate standards has become very important to the current educational system. This paper aims to discuss conceptual frameworks for prospective science teachers in Indonesia. Using an extensive literature review of three document (P21, enGauge-21CS, and ATC21S) and group discussion with a two-round Delphi study, we have constructed the Indonesian Partnership for 21st-Century Skills Standards (IP-21CSS) based on an agreement between 15 panelists. From the results of this study, we have established four IP-21CSS that were perceived by panelists as appropriate standards for prospective science teachers in Indonesia ranging from 4.5 to 5 or in the high level. These standards include: (1) 4Cs (critical thinking, creative thinking, collaboration, and communication); (2) ICTs (technology, media, and information literacy); (3) spiritual values (religious beliefs and spiritual awareness); and (4) character building (teachers’ attitudes and scientific attitudes). Therefore, it concludes that the implementation of 21st-century education learning that emphasizes each IP-21CSS indicator needs to be considered as an essential component in the courses process for prospective science teachers in Indonesia.

Government funding has the potential to increase research on particular topics that represent an integral focus of governmental policy. The reason is that researchers who seek funding from government sources need to target specific calls for research on topics that the government has identified as necessary for society. Analysis of funding trends can raise awareness about what topics are receiving adequate attention and can demonstrate how funding schemes may serve to limit (intentionally and unintentionally) researchers’ authority to design and manage projects and disseminate findings that are not financially supported by government funding agencies. In this study, we used a content analysis approach to analyze all projects awarded to the top five public teacher education institutions (TEIs) in Indonesia from 2014-2018. From the research project list from the five TEIs, we identified 225 science education projects for the sample of analysis. We extracted all keywords (nouns and adjectives) from the research project titles and grouped all extracted keywords into four categories: research topic, research subject or context, research product and outcomes, and content target. From the analysis, we offer some educational context for why scientific literacy and character and values education have emerged as such prominent topics in Indonesia, and we highlight the importance of greater involvement of teachers in research projects, the significance of research outcomes for improving science teaching and learning in schools, and the need to promote research on pedagogical coursework.

Indonesia, as a large country with a wealth of natural resources and abundant human resources, should be a nation that plays a great role in the development of science and technology. STEM education can be used in other scientific fields by utilizing the principles of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics as a basis for learning and developing potential students. This study is aimed at examining the teachers’ perceptions on STEM education in Indonesia including the understanding of STEM definition more deeply. The subjects in this study consist of 117 science teachers from Indonesia. A set of questionnaire which comprises open-ended and closed-ended questions about teachers’ perceptions and understanding regarding STEM education and the 21st century skills preparation were developed and applied. Responses from the science teachers were analysed through interpretive methods in which the participants’ own meanings and points of view were sought. The results indicate that STEM education is quite well understood by the teachers. It is important that we focus on the teachers because they play a critical role in the success of new reforms. The implication is that there is a great need for awareness raising at both government and teacher levels to embrace STEM education.
