Abstract

The learning process has characteristics that reflect scientific, thematic, collaborative, and student-centered. This type of learning usually uses constructivist learning, and one of them is Inquiry. The inquiry is a process to get information by conducting observations or experiments to find answers or solve problems for questions or formulation a problem by using logical and critical thinking skills. This preliminary study focused on investigating new prospective teachers’ inquiry ability. The respondents were new prospective teachers of Hamzanwadi University. The research instrument was a student worksheet with the topic “photosynthesis.” Data analysis used descriptive statistical methods by calculating the score of each indicator of Inquiry after three assessments. Using of amount score to shows that for each indicator: (1) problem formulation (66), (2) Hypothesis (50), (3) Design (40), (4) Findings (12), and (5) Conclusions (10). It can be concluded that the new prospective teachers’ in their involvement still needed to be trained, guidance, and continues to be developed. Therefore, Inquiry-based learning needs an extension for their next learning.

Abstract

Science generic skill is very important for students to solve every problem in learning processes and daily life. The purpose of this research was to explore the students’ needs of the chemistry module based on search, solve, create, and share (SSCS) to increase science generic skills. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. There were 61 students in XI Grade from two Senior High Schools at Surakarta. The data were collected using questionnaires sheets, interviews, and materials analysis. The research revealed that the module and teaching materials used in the schools have not empowered the science generic skills maximally; also, the teachers remained to adopt discourse method which resulted in a teacher-centered learning. Such learning made the learning activities seemed monotonous, uninteresting, and less motivated the students in building concepts. Thus, the students required alternative teaching materials to increase their science generic skills. In sum, it is necessary to develop a chemistry module on the atomic structure which oriented to the SSCS.

Abstract

Instruments that are valid, reliable, and have high consistency are needed to measure students’ self-reflection. The Self-Reflection Assessment in Vertebrate Zoology (SRAVZ) was developed to explore students’ self-reflection and abilities in the vertebrate zoology course. It is essential to test the instrument’s validity before measuring students’ abilities so that data bias does not occur. This study aims to determine the validity, whether the items are fit or misfit, and the difficulty level of SRAVZ items. SRAVZ is developed by ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). The SRAVZ consists of 24 items tested on 135 students who have taken the vertebrate zoology course. Analysis of the Rasch model using Winstep version 4.5.2. The Rasch model shows the item reliability value at 0.97. The Cronbach alpha value at 0.94 with PTMEA Corr shows a positive value, unidimensional 48.1%. The separation index of 5.6 means that the level of grouping the items is very good. The mean square infit for SRAVZ was 0.59-1.96, and the mean square outfit value is 0.59-2.16. Data analysis shows that 24 SRAVZ items have 22 fit items and two misfit items (S3 and S5). Item numbers S3 and S5 must be excluded from the SRAVZ construction. Total items used to measure students’ self-reflection in the vertebrate zoology course were 22 items. The most difficult item is S3, and the easiest item is S6. Thus, the data indicate that the valid and reliable SRAVZ is in the good, effective, and high level of consistency category
