Students’ Problems in Pronouncing Non-Existing English Diphthongs in Indonesian Language

Abstract

One of the difficulties in learning the English language faced by Indonesian students is how to pronounce English sounds correctly. For several Indonesian students, producing English diphthong sounds could be difficult especially English diphthong sounds which do not exist in Indonesian ([ɪə], [ʊə], [eɪ], [eə] and [oʊ]). This study investigated the Indonesian students’ problems English diphthong pronunciation. The objective of this study was to describe how well the English diphthong sounds are pronounced by the students and to find out the kind of errors that were mostly found in the pronunciation of students. The participants of this study were 35 students of the eleventh grade of SMK N 2 Salatiga. The instruments were the production test containing English diphthong sounds and interviews as additional data. In determining the achievement, the level of criterion by Tinambunan’s criterion was used. Based on the data analysis, the total average of the incorrect numbers of English diphthong sounds in pronunciation made by students was 69% which was categorized as fair. In addition to it, the kinds of errors mostly found in the students’ pronunciation English diphthong sounds were omission errors. According to the result of the interview, the causes of the errors were unfamiliarity of knowing English diphthong sounds, so the sounds of English appeared to pronounce with the closest Indonesian sounds.

Abstract

Idrus was a noteworthy writer in Indonesian in the course of Japanese authority. His fight in being rebellious counter to the regime at that period was noticeable through his writings, which made him familiar as a frank writer. His works were then translated into English. The translated works, nevertheless, do not communicate precisely the analogous implication as they were in the source language. Putting on Zepetnek’s Expressive Mechanisms in analyzing Idrus’ Heihois advantageous in this study in accepting whether the messages in the text to be translated (TT1) are well informed in the translated text (TT2). The results show that the TT2 of Idrus’ Heihois not able to send detailed apathy headed for Japanese propaganda as it was in the TT1. Cultural and period gaps are worth mentioning to be reflected in the interpretation process.
English Teachers’ Conceptions of Formative Assessment in Online Teaching

Abstract

Formative assessment is one type of assessment that is commonly implemented in teaching and learning. However, to carry out a formative assessment, teachers need to adjust the conceptions of formative assessment in the online teaching and learning environment. This descriptive qualitative study aimed to determine the English teacher's conceptions of formative assessment in online teaching and learning. To gather the data, the writers used a closed-questionnaire and semi- structured interview. Furthermore, two English teachers participated as the sample of this study. These two English teachers were selected based on several predetermined conditions; teaching experience and educational background. The result of this study shows that both English teachers have a good conception of formative assessment in online teaching. They consider that the application of formative assessments in the online classroom is easy and does not need complicated requirements in its implementation. In addition, formative assessment can help English teachers monitor the progress of their students so that they can prepare better future lesson plans according to the conditions of their students in the online teaching and learning process.

Abstract

People carry out almost all social behaviors through language, either spoken or written. The language to be used needs rules and principles; and when it comes to see language from a socio-cultural perspective, and consider the ‘worlds of users’ incorporating the context or ‘human condition’, people refer to the pragmatic use of it, which means that Pragmatics is the study of a context-dependent language. People owe their respects to great many linguists and experts in Pragmatics for their various expertises in this field to explain ‘how the language operates in force of contextually implied conditions’. With this view, the writer of this paper attempts to learn the important relationship between context and Pragmatics.

Abstract

This paper explores the concept of patriarchy as an undesirable ideology that promotes the oppression of the weak and vulnerable in society by the strong and powerful in Isidore Okpewho’s The Last Duty. It is widely held that patriarchy promotes the domination of men over women and promotes an artificial hierarchy of class in which women become subordinates to their male gender. Yet, patriarchy does not only make subjugates of women. Depending on the dictates and expectations of a culture, men, like women, can equally be made subjugates of patriarchy if they are deemed unworthy of the title of a man. This usually happens when they do not measure up to the standard of societal expectations, particularly, within African cultural setting. Using the theory of Marxism, this paper argues that patriarchy not only succeeds in creating a society that operates on classism in which women are the subordinates; men too become victims. In addition, patriarchy inflicts deep psychological trauma on men and women who suffer its tenets. The conclusion is that men and women collectively fight patriarchy in order to achieve an egalitarian society where synergy can be harnessed for the betterment of all.

Abstract

This study aimedto find the English teachers‘ perceptions and practices of authentic assessment in the pilot project schools of the 2013 curriculum in Grobogan regency. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, first, a survey was done. Then, to obtain more in-depth information about the teachers‘ perceptions and practices of authentic assessment, a case study research was conducted. In this case, interview and classroom observation were conducted. Then, the data were analyzed through reading or memoing, describing, and classifying.The study revealed that the teachers have positive perceptions towards authentic assessment as they agreed that the assessment approach is beneficial to assess students‘ progress and achievement. However, the teachers perceived insufficient time, crowded classes, exhausting and time consuming activities, and also complicated administration as the main problems in applying authentic assessment. There were no significant differences among the teachers on the way they applied authentic assessment. In this case, they preferred written and task basedassessment, performance assessment, and also classroom observation in assessing their students. Nevertheless, in some cases, they did not apply the assessment properly as they did not put the assessment principles into practices.

Abstract

Creative and suggest speech partners. This study aimed to identify the persuasion action strategies in da'wah discourse on social media of Instagram. The approach of this study was descriptive qualitative. The data of this study was persuasion utterances in da'wah discourse on social media. The data collection employed documentation, transcription, and listening method and was followed by note-taking techniques. The data analysis of this study used the distributional method and markup reading technique. The results of this study showed that there are eleven persuasion strategies used by Ustadz Hanan Attaki in da'wah through social media of Instagram. The eleven strategies include (1) the use of Al-Qur'an, (2) directly persuasion (3) indirectly persuasion, (4) persuasion using repetition, (5) the use of stories, (6) the use of the figure of speech, (7) the use of hope, (8) ) the use of analogy, (9) the use of Al-Hadith, (10) the use of expressiveness, and (11) the use of cause and effect. In the era of global communication, the realization of da'wah on social media can utilize persuasive language to influence speech partners so that the purpose of da'wah can be successful

Abstract

This research aims to develop model of Bahasa Indonesia teaching materials which are taken from stories in Quran by using Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)approach in grade 7 of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Muqimus Sunnah Palembang. Research method employed in this study is Research and Development (RD). The research procedure undertaken in this study is taken from theory of Borg and Gall that consists of three steps, i.e. introduction, development, and evaluation. Meanwhile, for the data collection technique, this study implements documentation, observation, questionnaire, interview, and test. As for the validity and reliability of the model of teaching materials in this study, researchers ask for assessment and evaluation from experts, i.e. the syllabus expert, Bahasa Indonesia expert, and Islamic religion expert. The result shows that the teaching material model is effective and eligible to be used. The highest score of the experimental class is 95 and the lowest score is 74, while the average score is 87. Meanwhile, the highest and lowest score of the control class are 84 and 64, respectively, with average score of 77.5. Moreover, the average score between the experimental and control group also has been tested and counted by using t-test and shows a significant result, that ist = 1.685.

Abstract

The teaching writing is still in need of interesting teaching media to support its pedagogy as teaching writing is associated with difficult subject to be taught. Prior researches have been conducted on teaching writing area and the result suggested conducting more study on teaching writing effectively. This study attempts to fulfill the gap and takes teaching media as the focus of the research. This article investigated the employment of animated films as a teaching medium in the teaching of narrative writing tests, as well as if they are still effective in supporting the learning process. The sample of the research was taken from the students of a Junior high school in Parepare, Indonesia which was chosen purposively. Online Google Forms was employed as research tools for the study, and the questionnaire and test writing were used to collect data. Quantitative analysis was used in analyzing the data gathered. Regarding the research result, the data revealed that there is difference result between before and after the research. Students respond positively to an animation video utilized in the study as an alternate media in teaching narrative text of writing. They enjoyed the learning process of writing narrative text via animation film as the media as well as improved their positive energy in writing. It can be suggested for the next researcher to study more in another issue of animation film for teaching.

Abstract

This study is aimed at describing what types of English Indonesian children can produce after they learn it from school and what linguistic features are used in their English (language). The corpus of the data is a stretch of approximately sixty-minute dialogue between 5 primary school children and their teacher. Functional approach proposed by Halliday is applied in conducting this study, therefore the term “English” in the title of this paper later on will be exclusively understood as ‘speech function’. Meanwhile, the phrase “young EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners” in the following paper is used in several similar meanings, like children, young learners, primary school learners. Using Speech Function Network developed by Eggins and Slade (1997), then, it is found out that Indonesian young EFL-learners are able to produce speech functions (English) such those of produced by adult in quite complex linguistic features.
