Abstract

This study aims to provide explanation on the fransfer of modalization in restructuring interpersonal clauses.As a case study, it has been deliberately directed to analyze written clauses in English texts and theircounterparts in Indonesian. Four major procedures were taken to manage the data withdrawn from thetexts, i.e. (1) data reduction, (2) data display, (3) data analysis, dan (4) inferencing. Based on theprocedures, it was found that in order to achieve functional equivalence, interpersonal clauses weretranslated by means of restructuring processes. The grammar of proposition has been restructured in threemajor modes, i.e. (1) the translation of polarity which includes affirmative, polar interrogative, whinterrogative,and exclamative restructuring , (2) the restructuring of probability which includes the transfer ofModal adjunct, Mood adjunct, and Grammatical metaphor, (3) the transfer of usuality which was restructuredaccording its different degrees.

Abstract

Living under feudalism and capitalism seems very good for those who were born from rich people. It is because they do not have to struggle of their life and would get everything as desire. Meanwhile, it is very hard for poor people because their live is worse and if they do not struggle of the life they might die. “The Happy Prince” is the story that shows how the feudalism and early capitalism work in the society. People live contradictory under those systems. Fortunately, since the capitalism applies, the poor people find new hope. Their laborpower is paid so that they are to feed themselves and the family. Besides, they work for the capitalists’ happiness. This new term of live is not a big different from feudal system. The payment for the poor who work is a very little difference that makes the poor happy. This research aims to describe how the feudalism and the early capitalism work in the short story. Using the sociological approach as to the evidences of the feudalism and the early capitalism system in the story is chosen to describe the impacts of those systems toward society. The result of this research shows that poor people accept the system of capitalism than the feudalism. It is because their labor-power is paid. This condition is different from previous system (feudalism) that makes poor people are getting worse because they must work freely.

Abstract

This study is aimed to elaborate the uniqueness of Barack Obama‘s inaugural speech when he has been sworn in as the 44th US president at 20 January 2009. This research is a (qualitative) bibliographical study. The object of the study is the analysis of the use of metaphor in Barrack Obama‘s speech. There are 23 sentences chosen to represent all the metaphorical sentences of Obama‘s speech being the object of the study. Having analyzed the data by the perspective of George Lakoff and Johnson‘s conceptual metaphor, the researcher can draw a conclusion that Obama has effectively and creatively used metaphorical expressions in convincing his people about his future plans. His remarkable speech discussing how to solve the great scale of the economic mess that now confronts the US and the common feeling of the loss of national self-confidence.
Cohesion and Coherence of Students Recount Texts in Indonesia

Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the cohesion and coherence of recount texts and their implication to teaching writing. The data was fifteen recount texts which were non-randomly chosen from the first-grade students of high school in Central Java, Indonesia. This was qualitative research employing cohesion theory by Halliday and Hasan (1976) and thematic progression proposed by Butt et al. (1995). The result of this research showed that most of the cohesive devices employed by the students were personal reference with 58.11%; demonstrative reference and definite article with 7.18%; comparative reference with 0.93%), lexical (repetition 22.21%; synonym 0.66%; superordinate 0.13%), conjunction (temporal conjunction 7.45%; adversative conjunction: 1.33%; additive conjunction 1.06%; causal conjunction 0.66%), and ellipsis with 2%. The presuppositions of the presupposed items and presupposing items were achieved anaphorically and cataphorically; most of them were anaphoric. The distances of the presuppositions were in the forms of immediate ties, mediated ties, and non-mediated ties. Furthermore, immediate ties occurred extensively. Based on the analysis, most of the texts were cohesive due to the achievement of presupposing and presupposed items in every sentence of the texts. Then, coherence of the students recount texts was achieved by employing three kinds of patterns: reiteration/ constant, zig-zag, and multiple thematic progression patterns. Most of the texts were developed by using a reiteration/ constant pattern. Based on the analysis, most texts were not coherent because of the unrelated clauses. As the result, they broke the signposted progression of the texts. The finding was expected to possibly contribute to the process of teaching writing by encouraging the students to create a good text in a cohesive and coherent way.

Abstract

This article is concerned with the analysis of discourse on advertisement. The aim of this discussion is to try to make sense of an advertisement from the point of view of linguistic construction, meaning, and its textuality. Results of the discussion indicate that in order to be called a text the observed advertisement should be analyzed by means of elliptical operation. As soon as the elliptical clauses and sentences of the advertisement are established, the meaning or intention of the advertisement can be derived. Unless the truths of the messages conveyed by the advertisement are clarified, ambiguities will still remain that will affect the understanding and response of the readers or potential buyers. As a material for discourse analysis, however, the advertisement is a very interesting thing to be talked about.   Key words: advertisement, ellyptical, ambiguity

Abstract

The research is aimed at preserving the story of Kota Sala Legend. It used qualitative approach. The data were derived from caretakers, the elderly, the artists from Surakarta Palace, and the public figures, as well as from books and articles by using documentation and interview techniques. The data were analyzed by using qualitative descriptive method into several steps as the following: (1) Conducting interview and observing the documents, (2) Collecting and arranging the data into a complete story, (3) Analyzing its character values, and (4) Analyzing its relevance as a teaching material. The results indicate that (1) the oral tradition of Kampong Sala Legend can be documented into a pictorial story book in three languages: Javanese, Indonesian, and English; (2) The story consists of character values such as religious, honest, discipline, hard-working, creative, solicitous, and responsible; (3) The story is very relevantly used as teaching materials at school especially in the subject of Bahasa Jawa and Bahasa Indonesia.

Abstract

The research was based on an experimental design at Pre-School of Mondial School in the academic year of 2011/2012. The objectives of the research are to investigate (1) the effectiveness of movie as a medium of teaching, (2) the significant deference in using movie as a media of treatment and using discussion strategy as a media of treatment in improving the students’ mastery in story retelling, (3) the students’ socio-cultural background takes part in determining their achievement besides the effect of seeing movies as a means of improving their story retelling ability. The empirical data were obtained from Pre-Test and the Post-Test. The data were then measured and analyzed in form of statistical and descriptive analysis. The result of this study showed that the group used movies as medium in story retelling got better improvement in the average scores than those without movies. Moreover, it was also found that most of the high achievers, both in the experimental group and in the control group, came from social environment with the more capability to encourage the students to make use of movies for the benefit of their study, especially of retelling story.
THE EFFECTIVENESS OF COMMUNICATIVE LANGUAGE TEACHING METHOD TO ENHANCE THE STUDENTS’ MOTIVATION IN INCREASING THEIR TOEFL SCORE

Abstract

STIEPARI students’ achievement was found to have declined during 2008 - 2010. Almost all language skills were affected. One attempt to rectify the problem was the creation of a program called STIEPARI Language Course (SLC). The natures of the data in this research were quantitative and qualitative. The quantitative data were taken from the post-test TOEFL scores of 30 STIEPARI students. The 30 students were divided into 2 groups, Experimental Class and Control Class. Experimental Class was taught using Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) method in the teaching learning process; on the other hand, Control Class was taught without using CLT. The qualitative data were taken from student comments on the STIEPARI Language Course (SLC). From the t-test analysis, the result shows that there is a significant difference between the mean score of post-test of the Experimental Class and the mean score of post-test of the Control Class. This result shows that, statistically, the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) method is an effective method to enhance students’ motivation in increasing TOEFL score. It should be mentioned, however, that TOEFL scores should be interpreted with care. To summarize students’ feedback on the STIEPARI Language Course (SLC), in general, both the Experimental Class and the Control Class learned a lot from the SLC. This comment is supported by the increase in TOEFL score.
Representations of Christmastide in Latin American Christmas Folk Songs: A Transitivity Analysis

Abstract

Considered as the universal language, music has been historically a means of communication and personal expression about the inner and outer world of its creator, it is present in almost every social activity of human beings as in the habitual religious celebration of Christmas across the largely Catholic countries. Therefore, the present paper will provide a descriptive text analysis of ten traditional Latin American Christmas folk songs on the base of the transitivity system informed by the Hallidayan Systemic Functional Linguistics theory. To reach this goal, both a quantitative and qualitative research method approach was applied. Findings indicated that among the six analyzed transitivity process types, the material processes (32%) dominate the construal of the musical pieces, followed by the mental (23%), behavioral (18%), and relational realizations (13%) whereas the verbal and existential processes are relatively low all together representing an overall frequency of 14%. This reveals the singers’ attempt to represent the Christmas season as a nostalgic time leap, an immediate enjoyment, and a rewarding exchange. 
THE ERRORS OF SEGMENTAL PHONEMES AMONG LIBYANS ENGLISH STUDENTS STUDYING IN SEMARANG CITY, INDONESIA

Abstract

This study attempts to investigate the errors of segmental phonemes that Libyan English students have when they pronounce English sounds. The participants in the study were fifteen, three females and the rest males, who study in Semarang city, Indonesia, and they were form different majors of master and Doctoral degrees (information system, public health, economic and bio-medic) at Semarang State University and Diponegoro University. The participants have never been to any of the English speaking countries, so they do not have any kind of exposure to a native English environment. The data was collected by two methods; recording test, in order to identify and evaluate the segmental errors, and questionnaire, in order to obtain participants’ perceptions about the expected errors, the reasons behind these errors and how to cope with them. The results showed that the Libyan speakers in this study had errors while they produce consonant clusters and certain English sounds, such as: consonants” /p/ , /v/ , /θ/ , /ð/ , /tʃ/ , /dʒ/ and /ŋ/”, vowels “ /ә/ , /ɛ:/ , /i:/ , /ɑ:/ , /u:/ , /ᴐ:/ and /ɪ/”, and finally diphthongs “/eә/ , /ʊә/ , /әʊ/.” This study also provides some helpful suggestions and recommendation that will reduce future errors regarding English segmental phonemes among Libyan English learners.
