Abstract

The study aims to know good-life concepts of moral value in Robin Hood movie. This research used qualitative approach. The researcher found that five moral principles are tolerance, belief, kind-hearted, integrity, and responsibility. In this movie, good-live concepts of moral value are tolerance for human relationships with Heaven, belief is entrusting everything to God's power, kind‐hearted is honesty in this movie that the hero succeeded in winning people's hearts by his supporting honesty, integrity is like finding a valuable gem, and responsibility portrayed feels responsible for defense, reminding people of responsibility to protect their position in everywhere.

Abstract

The modern era, especially in the global pandemic Covid – 19, the need of information, knowledge and entertainment becomes a crucial part since the activities must go online. The government rule stated that the information shall be accessible for anyone, the deaf and hearing impaired, for instance. This descriptive qualitative study aims to investigate the translation technique done by the students in working for subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH) in Audiovisual translation class. The finding of 208 data revealed that there are 12 of 18 techniques applied proposed by Molina and Albir. The most dominant technique is literal translation, besides it showed that the students as a subtitlers may apply one or more techniques during doing the subtitling. As a pedagogical implication to this study, the results can be considerations in designing the curriculum for Audio visual translation subject with complete theories and practices, especially in terms of building the emotion and characterization

Abstract

Danmu denotes user-generated dynamic and contextualised comments scrolling across the screen. Owing to its resemblance to a bullet curtain, such a text-over-screen technology is referred to as ‘bullet comment/message’ or ‘barrage subtitling’. Since being adopted from Japan, danmu has expeditiously developed from a niche subcultural entity into a prominent property of Chinese online video culture. Danmu obtains popularity among young audiences, in that it establishes social media co-viewing, creates a sense of belonging, allows self-expression and facilitates social connectedness. Moreover, danmu enables creators to demonstrate a sense of existence, especially via informative, alerting and spoiler comments. The popularity of danmu in China is ascribed to diversified and concise literacy practice. More significantly, it is attributed to linguistic and cultural prerequisites: the Chinese written language is featured by a high information density and robust parafoveal preview effects; the Chinese culture is marked by a high level of polychronicity and collectivism, as well as conspicuous social and peer pressure.

Abstract

The investigation attempted to explore the influence of flow mind map on writing accuracy and learning motivation at Islamic Higher Education. There were two variables: flow mind map as a predictor variable; writing accuracy and learning motivation as the outcome variables. The study involved L2 participants at higher education in Kalimantan. The participants was 37 students, consisting of two groups: experiment class and control class. A main effect of one way Anova was used to measure an effect of flow mind map on learners’ writing score and learning motivation. The finding revealed that the value of writing accuracy at F (1,36) = 44.861, SS 3591.045, MS= 3591.045, p= 0.000; and the value of learning motivation at F (1,36) = 40.925, SS 2006.600, MS= 2006.600, p= 0.000. The significance value was below 0.050, meaning there was a statistically difference in the mean of using flow mind map on learners’ writing accuracy and learning motivation. It was recommended that language instructor motivate learners during the learning process. Due to the limited number of sample size, the further investigations with broader scope and larger sample size were needed to validate the research findings.

Abstract

This research aims to develop denotative and connotative meanings in sayyid El-Rais' videos, as well as reveal myths based on Barthes's perspective. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. Data collection technique used observation and taking notes technique. Researchers used descriptive analysis techniques based on the Miles and Huberman model are data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. The results showed that reading of first level in semiotics perspective produced several codes that referred to text structure including; symbolic, semantic, and hermeneutic. Denotatively, the speech in video reflect outpouring of a Palestinian child about incidents that happened to him, called deprived homeland. The second level reading that refers to code development resulted in a myth of religious tolerance. In connotative meaning, there are portraits of religious intolerance that are carried in these stories. This speech presents as religious intolerance representation felt by the Palestinian people so that the author's message that can be taken through this portraits is able to increase awareness of religious tolerance and empathy for others as humanity form

Abstract

You’ll Apologize If You Have To (2015), a short story by Ben Fowlkes, portrays the struggle of an American in pursuing his dreams. The primary data of this research is the narration and dialogues uttered by the characters: Wallace, Kim, Molly, the Old Lady, and the Green-Jacket Man. Those data are classified based on the American dreams (Adams, Franklin, Jefferson, Livingston, & Sherman, 2014; Cullen, 2003; Mailer, Thompson, & Wolfe, 2009), specifically those related to material wealth. The result of this research reveals that in their daily life, the characters have their perspectives on seeing America as the land of dreams. Generally, they dream of a better life and happiness. However, this short story also portrays American dreams as a paradox because not all Americans have the privilege to achieve those dreams.

Abstract

A new phenomenon comes up early today that the F word or fuck has been becoming popular among children regardless of the setting. The study examines the children’s perception towards the F word in two cities in East Java: Surabaya (a metropolitan city) and Jombang (a sub-urban city). To investigates F words' usage among fifty children eight – fourteen years old in these two places, a descriptive qualitative method was employed by conducting interviews and observation. The result shows six perceptions through the F word: impolite word, an angry expression, a friendly word, a joke, and an offensive word. The way in which they acquire the F word varies, as does the purpose and the function of the F word as a wave of anger, sarcasm, conformity, solidarity, and frustration.

Abstract

This study explored the writing self-efficacy of English education undergraduates at Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta. Nowadays, many students still have not used self-efficacy in their studies. Consequently, they may encounter difficulties when working on tasks. As a result, the scores obtained are not the highest. Which may make them lack the motivation to learn. The purpose of this research was to determine the application of self-efficacy in writing works for the undergraduate course of English Education at Sanata Dharma University. The research question was: How can undergraduate students of the English Education Study Program manage self-efficacy and writing anxiety to complete the academic writing class? This research adopted qualitative methods making use of the Likert scale and interviews. The questionnaire was distributed to Sanata Dharma University’s undergraduates who had received English courses in reading literary works. The results show that undergraduates have a high sense of self-efficacy, can complete academic writing on time, and we are motivated by their internal and surrounding environments.

Abstract

The integration of life skills in English language teaching has to be managed properly to achieve an optimal result. The exploration to the fields reveals some problems on their implementation: (1) classroom management, (2) selection of learning materials, (3) learning assessment, and (4) selection of learning methods. In addition, most teachers were fully satisfied with the existing model due to the following reasons: (1) requiring an extra preparation and teaching media, (2) incomplete communication task executions, and (3) inflexibility of model to apply in any class. To make the model of implementation better some recommendation are made: (1) incorporating materials reflecting life skills, (2) providing more comprehensible inputs, (3) developing a representative assessments, and (4) selecting a learning method that guide teacher to gradually develop communicative competence and simultaneously develop life skills.
The Influence of the Mastery of Function Words on Students’ Reading Ability

Abstract

This study is an ex-post facto research which aims to find out the influence of the mastery of function words on reading ability of the seventh grade students of secondary school and to find out how the reading ability between students with adequate function words’ mastery and students with inadequate function words’ mastery is. The samples used in this research were two groups of students who have adequate and inadequate function words’ mastery. Each group consists of 30 students that is chosen by using stratified random sampling. In analysing the data, researcher used Independent Sample t-Test. The result shows that the mastery of function words significantly influences students’ reading ability. It is found that there is significant difference of students’ reading ability between students with adequate mastery in function words with those having inadequate mastery in function words. It is found that students with adequate function words’ mastery have better and higher ability in reading than students having inadequate function words’ mastery.
