Westernised Chinese in Yu Hua’s Chronicle of a Blood Merchant Wang, Aiqing

Abstract

Yu Hua is one of the most illustrious avant-garde and post-modernist writers in contemporary China, whose chefs-d’oeuvre can be exemplified by a 1995 novel Chronicle of a Blood Merchant. Notwithstanding widespread accolades, Yu Hua’s fiction is excoriated by his peer Han Han for resembling works translated from Western literature. In this research, I scrutinise the language deployed in Chronicle of a Blood Merchant under the framework postulated by Yu Kwang-chung. I propound that the language in Chronicle of a Blood Merchant bears similitude to Westernised/Europeanised Chinese, in that it involves conspicuous light verbs, nominalisation, bei passivisation, subordinating and coordinating conjunctions, plural forms, as well as premodifiers and particles, a considerable proportion of which are redundant and impinged upon by the English language.
A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE USE OF “KEIGO” BETWEEN FOREIGN AND JAPANESE STUDENTS

Abstract

In Japanese there is so called “keigo” (honorific/polite expressions). Honorifics (polite expressions) are used to show intimacy with another person and also to distinguish between one’s superiors and subordinates. These forms are an integral part of daily life of Japanese people. If we want to adjust to Japanese society, in order able to communicate fluently and apropiately, the use of polite expressions is absolutely required. For this reason, polite expressions are very important in communicating with Japanese people. Therefore foreign studens who are studyng in Japan need to understand polite expressions as much aspossible, event if they are not majoring in Japanese Language and culture. To analize the items above with questionnaires, field data were collected from 50 Japanese students and 50 foreign students. The questionnaires consisted of the following items: (1) the difference in the keigo used by foreign and Japanese student, (2) the difference in usage of first person pronouns, (3) ) the difference when offering something to another person, (4) the difference in a question keigo usage when asking teacher, (5) )the difference in keigo usage when discussing one’s teacher with another person, (6) the difference in keigo usage with demonstrative pronouns, (7) students opinions about keigo:differences in levels of difficulty in using keigo, differences in the use of keigo in daily life, difference in the use of keigo in daily family life, differences in the use of iscussing past and present conditions, differences in using keigo correctly and incorrectly, differences in reasons for using keigo, differences in processes of learning keigo. Foreigners’ opinions clarify that they find difficulties in using keigo as do Japanese students. Eventhough it is difficult, according to the opinions of the Japanese students, the use of keigo expressions is necessary. However, foreign students stated that keigo does not need to be used. Their reasons were: because it is very easy to make mistakes, very difficult to memorize, old language/orthodox, seldom use it, requires complicated consideration at status age, etc. and everyone should have the same status. Considering the opinions mentioned above keigo education for foreign students, especially for Indonesian students, is very much in need. Results of the interviews with Indonesian students illustrate their difficulties. Therefore, in my opinion the following points are most important in teaching Japanese keigo to Indonesian students: (1) the need to inform student a Japanese language has a keigo system and introduce to them the various kinds and forms of keigo, (2) the need to teach keigo grammar (sentence structure), (3) drill, (4) the need to teach appropriate expressions according to context using audio visual materials, (5) conversation practice simulation   Key: keigo, foreign and Japanese students.
Improving Students’ Argumentative Writing Skill through Rubric and Group Feedback

Abstract

This study intends to gain comprehensive understanding about the implementation of rubric and group feedback and to know students’ argumentative writing achievement. This study was conducted at the fourth semester students of English education study program of Teacher College Pattimura University in Ambon academic year 2015/2016. Action research method was used in this study. Data collection instruments used were students writing assessment rubrics, questionnaires, and record / field observation sheets of both observer and researcher. Descriptive statistics was used in analyzing data. The results shows that the synergy of rubric and group based feedback have improved students’ argumentative writing skills. In pre cycle the average score of the students was 66.26 while in cycle I the average score was 72.09. In cycle II the students’ average score rose to 78.00. Overall, more than 70% of the students have acquired good score for their argumentative writing. Rubric and group feedback strategy in fact has improved students’ argumentative writing skill.

Abstract

The English electronic school textbooks or known as BSE (Buku Sekolah Elektronik) for senior high school are used by students in Indonesia since this kind of book is downloadable free in the internet. Due to that reason, this study intends to evaluate the language use in the book by means of appraisal analysis. The focus of attention will be on the representation of humanistic values in the book. The values are necessarily to promote due to the fact that textbooks become one of resources for students to build their characters as language enables humans to express their conscious awareness of emotions (Dong, 2006). Consequently, what the book presents influences the students‘ attitudes towards certain issues. This research attempts to find out what humanistic values are promoted in the book and how the writers‘ attitudes are represented to show the humanistic values.The analysis shows that the book presents three values: respecting others, nature and social issues. The writers‘ attitudes towards the values are dominated by affect: 87% in respecting other people and 73% in respecting social issues. To respect nature, the writers‘ attitudes are shown in appreciation, presented in 71%.

Abstract

Disney is one of the biggest animation companies in the world. They have released many animations since then until now. One of the most popular animations is the princess series. Until 20202, Disney has released fourteen princesses from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to Frozen 2. Gender role depictions of the female character(s) were examined with a focus on their behavioral characteristics in the films. The English subtitle of Frozen 2 was used to find out the attitudinal expressions about the female characters. In order to make the research easier and more accurate, a concordance tool named Antconc was used to collect the data and create a corpus. Results found that the most recent princess series entitled Frozen 2 showed the female characters depicted as a precious person who was willing to sacrifice herself for others, kind, heroic, fearless, and full-of-spirit. However, Disney also depicted the female characters as liar and trouble maker. In this case, Disney keeps showing that females cannot be seen using the traditional gender’s perspective anymore. A Female is not only feminine, but she also can be masculine as a man.

Abstract

This article offers an overview of the conversation analysis (CA) method and its theoretical and practical applications for qualitative social scientific research. The article also discusses the method's analytical contributions and methodological applications based on the grammar of casual conversation offered by Eggins and Slade (1997). For illustration, analyses of data fragments are presented, using English language from telephone conversation recorded from one of radio programs. The recorded conversation was taken from the English Program at RCT FM radio on Sunday. The analyses try to describe and explain how language enables us to initiate and sustain casual talk. The article highlights CA's unique insights into the way social processes, relations, and identities are constructed and experienced at the level of everyday interaction, and draws attention to some of the ways in which the method can be of benefit to social scientists from a variety of disciplines. Abstract

This article discusses disappearance of uncanny in one of the greatest children novel from The First Golden Age of Children Literature in Britain, Winnie-the-Pooh. The discussion is meant to uncover why the uncanny does not arise when it is read although it has the elements to arise the uncanny. Moreover, the novel is very popular of its canniness. In doing analysis, Freud‘s thoughts on the uncanny help me to find the reason. The analysis resulted that the use of fantasy in the novel and how its story is narrated determine the readers to not concentrate on the uncanny. The disappearance of the uncanny and the emergence of canny in the novel has made the novel as a favorite reading material for children. This, in fact, is an approach to teach children some values which is influenced by the development of children literature since the 18 th century.

Abstract

Writing is often assumed as uneasy skill to either learn or teach. For students, they find it difficult to develop ideas in writing. On the other hand, teachers, many of them, only ready with the materials but confuse with the appropriate ways to teach. This paper intends to describe and discuss a method of teaching writing namely writing workshop to improve students’ writing skill through travel writing. Writing workshop proposed by Calkins that consists of mini lesson, work time, peer conferring and/or response groups, share sessions, and publication celebration is applied in writing class for methodological purposes. In mini lesson, teacher offers something to the class that is meant to introduce a writing strategy done at the beginning of the workshop. During work time point, students start their new piece of writing. Teacher moves among students conferring with them while checking their works. Peer conferences or response groups provide a forum for students to talk about works in progress. When students work in group, one of them could arrange his/ her group needs during the work time. A share session may be varied, one possible way is each group shares their process of writing to other students. At the end of writing class, student writers come together to publish and/ or celebrate their final work. The publication could be in the form of portfolio, students’ diary, blog, or others. Travel writing genre is chosen as it could develop students’ creativity in describing/ narrating their own stories during, let say holiday or things they used to see on the way home weekly or monthly. Furthermore, travel writing as the product of creative writing teaches the readers of values, characteristics, and way of life. Last but not least, a professional writing teacher should set the writing workshop components in variety ways to achieve effective running-class.

In patriarchy society, women do not have other choice but obey all rules set by men. As a result, women’s life marginalized and gap between women’s role and men’s occurred.The same condition and situation faced by a woman, as the main character, in Susan Glaspell’s  entitled ‘Trifles’. This paper would like to identify the patriarchy oppressions and analyze action as the reflection of  women’s power to end the oppressions of patriarchy. Abstract

Reflective pedagogy is a method dealing with a teaching methodology which is done based on a certain spiritualilty. It is important to study the implementation of reflective pedagogy because it helps the students to excel as fully human persons who own competence, compassion, and conscience. This study observes the implementation of reflective pedagogy in Advanced Reading and Writing Class. This research aims to find out the perceptions of the students on the process and the effects of the implementation. The writers employed survey to collect the data. The findings revealed that in general, the students had positive perceptions on the process and the effects of implementing Reflective pedagogy in Advanced Critical Reading and Writing class. The implementation of reflective pedagogy had been successful in developing students’ competence, conscience, and compassion. However, based on the interview, students’ conscience was developed to a limited extent.
