Abstract

This study is aimed to describe myths which appear in Edgar Allan Poe‘s ―The Raven‖ and to figure out the way that is used by Edgar Allan Poe to show the myths in the poem and convey the meaning of the poem itself. Archetype theory from Canadian critic Northrop Frye is used in this study in order to analyze the myths in ―The Raven‖ poem. Furthermore, to clarify the myths in the poem itself, this study uses a qualitative research as a method to collect, select, code, and analyze the data. In the research finding ―The Raven‖ poem by Edgar Allan Poe contains three types of archetype imagery, they are apocalyptic, demonic, and analogical imagery (analogy of innocence and analogy of experience). This poem also contains the four types of cyclical symbolism of archetype, they are divine world, human world, animal world, and mineral world. It is also found that this poem has a structure of sparagmos due to the dark myth and the confusion world that cover the theme of poem. Finally, this poem is divided into six phases of winter which is related to the literary genre of irony and satire that explain more about the sorrowfulness of the author, Edgar Allan Poe because his lover, Lenore leaves him.
Analysis on the Structure and Purposes of Travel Blog Posts

Abstract

Travel blogs have become a huge online platform used as a benchmark for Internet users to plan holiday itineraries, consider choices, and finalize travel-related purchase decisions. As popular travel blogs are often visited by online readers globally, there might be a shift in the purposes for writing travel blogs nowadays compared to traditional blog posts. Previous studies discussed the characteristics of blogs as a communicative platform; however, discussion on language features and blog structures used to achieve certain purposes of travel blogs is still scarce. This study, hence, aimed to evaluate the text structure and language function employed in popular travel blogs to determine their overall purposes. Eighteen posts were selected from six popular travel blogs and analyzed qualitatively by using Pascual’s (2018) blog structure moves and Jakobson’s (1960) language function framework. The findings showed that the travel blog posts consisted of four moves: situational, descriptive, closure, and invitational moves and that most of the moves mainly employed referential and emotive functions. Hence, the main purposes were to provide information on travel destinations and to express the bloggers’ feelings towards their travel experiences. The findings implied that the purposes of popular travel blog posts nowadays are related to the role of blogs as a source of information and the role of travel bloggers as social influencers in the online community.

People’s behaviours and roles are guided by prevalent norms and regulations so influential that their particular characteristics might be seen by others as distinctively belong to certain groups of societies. Easterners and Westerners might be seen as having distinctive features regarding politeness in human relation. Eastern societies organize themselves primarily according to behaviours showing polite treatment for the sake of moral sanction and socio-cultural harmony. This probably explains easterners preference for a communal life. As with Western societies, they tend to esteem positive politeness related to intimacy and negative politeness related to individual freedom that is attached to their preference for individualism. Eastern societies and Western societies perform distinctive politeness strategies having their own reasons and tendencies as bounded by pragmatic backgrounds of their existence. Pragmatic aspects include language use of various societies, the direct and indirect utterances, explicature and implicature, politeness strategies and many more. International communication calls for world attention toward respecting these distinctive features of various cultural backgrounds. Abstract

In India, the students, who are from mother-tongue medium schools, are well-acquainted with translation which has been a part in the language subjects. It has been an integral element of subject English and also for other language subjects like Hindi, Sanskrit at school. It has been used as an effective tool in learning English, though it has been in debate for the last decades for its use in some countries. This paper will discuss translation as a part of school curriculum in learning English, its limitation, challenges and current research on the same.

Abstract

Technology can change the paradigm of teacher-centered to be student-centered. One of the advantages of the technology is in making multimedia material. Multimedia material is one type of media that can be used as the solution to improve the student motivations in doing tasks in the worksheet. This study is a Research and Development of designing an E-Worksheet which is based on multimedia technology and internet network. There are seven stages to develop this E-Worksheet. They are Need Analysis, Product Design, Expert and Teacher Validation, First Product Revision, Field Test, Second Product Revision and Final Product. This study aims at developing interactive multimedia e–worksheet for the fourth graders of elementary school. It was tried out to the students and the results the students’ interest, motivation, and concentration in learning English, by using the Interactive Multimedia E-Worksheet was high. The level of difficulty of the E-Worksheet was well. The students’ activeness was very high. From these findings, it is suggested that English teachers need to learn how to design and develop multimedia material by using various computer programs. For Students, they should be control in utilizing computer and internet.

Abstract

The competence of writing English texts has become very important in this global era. To facilitate junior high school students to gain the competence, English teachers employ various techniques to reach the goal with the curriculum as the guideline. The research was conducted by employing Guided Learning Cell (GLC) technique. The objectives of this study are (1) to investigate to what extent GLC technique can develop the competence of the IX A students of SMPN 2 Semarang to write reports and (2) to investigate to what extent GLC technique can develop active collaboration of the IX A students of SMPN 2 Semarang in  writing reports. The research was conducted through Action Research with two cycles. Each cycle consists of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The results of the research can be concluded as follows: (1) GLC technique applied during the research had successfully developed students’ writing report competence. Before the research, IX A students’ writing average score is 70.52, while at the end of the research it is 84.29. At the end of the research, the average score has exceeded the writing passing grade, 80. This proved that the technique had developed their writing competence to the extent of 13.77. (2) Based on the second requirement of the research, GLC technique could also successfully develop students’ active collaboration with their mates to the extent of 42%. Before the research, only 1 (4%) student who could gain the passing grade, while – at the end of the research - 21 (88%) students could do so.

Abstract

Corruption in Kenya has been a particularly large problem since its independence from British rule in 1963. This paper explores the motivation behind a cultural specific metaphor of bribe and bribery labeling in Kenya as seen from the conceptual metaphor viewpoint. The study identifies and explains the different terms relating to a bribe and bribery, describes social-cultural values in Kenya, and accounts for the cognitive processes involved in their interpretation. The data includes a list of terms collected from traffic police officers, public transport workers and commuters from different parts of Kenya. These metaphors were identified by the Metaphor Identification Procedure (MIP) created by Pragglejaz Group (2007) and analyzed using the Cognitive Metaphor Theory from Lakoff and Johnson (1987). The results reveal that language spoken by a society is an essential part of its culture, and the lexical distinctions drawn by each language reflect culturally important features of objects, foods, institutions, games, air we breathe and other activities in the society in which the language operates. We argue that conceptual metaphors are conduits of communication, and it is prudent to apply the cognitive linguistic approach for their better contextual appreciation. This paper concludes by suggesting further avenues for research into socio-cultural metaphors, and by calling for the government to innovate new ways of fighting corruption because the players have invented ingenious ways of communicating about it metaphorically beyond comprehension for a lay person.
THE EFFECTIVENESS OF MUSIXMATCH APPLICATION INTEAM PAIR SOLO TECHNIQUE FOR TEACHING NARRATIVE WRITING

Abstract

This paper presents the results of a quasi-experimental research aimed to find out whether  Musixmatch and Team Pair Solo technique are effective for teaching narrative writing. There were 69 tenth grade students of a senior high school in Brebes, Central Java participating in this research. They were categorized into two groups named experimental and control group. To make it easier to understand, the result of this study is presented in the form of statistical data. The analysis result of the research showed that the use of Musixmatch and Team Pair Solo technique are more effective than the use of lecturing method for teaching narrative writing. This is shown by the post-test scores of the both groups, which was 81.74 for the experimental group and 77.00 for the control group. Furthermore, the result of Sig. (2-tailed) of T-test, which was 0.000,proved that there was a difference between students who were taught by using Musixmatch and Team Pair Solo technique and those who were taught by lecturing method.

Abstract

This study was aimed to describe the deixis usage in the novel of Ketika Cinta Bertasbih 1 by Habiburrahman El-Shirazy. Theoretically, this study is expected to be useful for the researcher of language and literature, and practically, this research can contribute the importance of understanding and preserving literature through language. The researcher used a qualitative descriptive method to analyze the content. Furthermore, the data collection had been transcribed and grouped based on the characteristic, form, and function that were related to the formulation of the research objectives. Based on the data analysis, this analysis found the usage of all kinds of deixis included person (I, you, they, we, he/she), time (now, tomorrow, later), place (here), discourse (it, that), and social (sir).

Abstract

Translating a novel is more difficult than translating academic texts. Novel translators (Genetic factor) usually have problems in translating figurative languages (metaphors, similes, personifications, etc.) and idiomatic expressions because they should reproduce in the target language (TL) the closest natural equivalence of the source language (ST) message, firstly in terms of meaning and secondly in terms of style accepted socio-culturally. Other problems come from the translation document (e.g. an English novel translated into Bahasa Indonesia) and readers of the translated novel. The translation document (Objective Factor) has mistakes in equivalence of words. Some expressions are not translated into the acceptable ones in the target language. The readers of translated novel (Affective Factor) are often confused on what they are reading because some sentences are not understandable. The solution of those problems is to provide the novel translators some practical guidance of translating a novel in order to produce the high quality of translation product.   Key words: translation, novel, metaphors, similes, idiomatic expressions, ST (Source Language), TL (Target Language)
