Abstract

The increased collaboration between Indonesia and China in various fields should be supported by sound and effective communication between the two parties. This partnership strongly affects the demand on Indonesian-Chinese translator and/or interpreter. The demand on interpreters are increasing rapidly, ranges from various sectors. However, Chinese language programs available in Indonesia these days are still at the undergraduate levels. Together with the increasing demand on interpreter, various Chinese language study programs are providing translation and/or interpreting courses to equip their students for future job market. As most of the Chinese language students in Indonesia begin to learn Chinese as a foreign language when they are at the university, teaching interpreting at the undergraduate level is certainly challenging compared to teaching interpreting at the postgraduate level. The writers therefore conducts a Needs Analysis on students to find out what are the needs and challenges faced by undergraduate level interpreting trainees, and what kind of curriculum design would suit the undergraduate level interpreting training. This study found that the biggest challenges for the trainees were nervousness during interpreting assignment, difficulty in delivering speech in L2 and L1, and difficulty in understanding L2 input. This study also shows that L2 correlation with trainees’ interpreting performance. The trainees in this study perceive that their foreign language skills affect their performance. Based on the Needs Analysis conducted in this study, the writers also provide suggestions for interpreting course design at the undergraduate level by putting into consideration the number and the linguistic background of students.

Abstract

This study is meant to investigate the realization of disagreement strategies by non-nativespeakers of English by eliciting data through DCT and role plays from two groups of students:first year students and third year students of English Department. The DCTs and role playscontain 24 situations which are designed in different issues and social status. The resultshowed that most students realized disagreement through contradiction, counterclaim,irrelevancy claim, contradiction and counterclaim, and challenges related to personalinvolvement and non-personal involvement issues in different social status. The contradictionstrategy was dominantly used by the students. Some students realized disagreement throughthe combination of counterclaim and challenge strategy in equal and high-low status related topersonal involvement, and equal and low-high status related to non-personal involvement. Inthis case, students did not only disagree by producing counterclaim response but alsochallenged the previous speaker to provide more evidence related to his/her statement. Thefindings also showed that there is no pragmatic development from first year students to thirdyear students because they produced disagreement strategy in the same way although theyhad different English proficiency level.

Abstract

Metaphors are mapped across two conceptual domains where A is B. Metaphorical expressionsare defined by dimensions including novelty, conventionality, abstractness and concreteness. The AbaGusii of Western Kenya is a highly conservative community of Bantu speakers of Western part of Kenya. They view HIV and Aids as taboo that cannot be the subject of discussion in public. Hence, People Living with HIV (hereafter PLHIV) are stigmatized and discriminated. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the metaphorical words and concepts that engender HIV and Aids-related stigma and discrimination in Kisii County. Descriptive narratives were elicited from HIV support providers using focus group discussions and follow-up interviews. The narratives were analysed in terms of five attributes of stigma and discrimination within the conceptual metaphor theory. Results revealed some culturally ingrained metaphors that evoke stigma and discrimination. The paper advocates for language management efforts using success stories in HIV and Aids management to construct positive messages to counter the negative metaphors.

Abstract

The aim of this present study is to reveal the technique and ideology of vocatives and proper names in The Hobbit. To be more precise, this study also examine translation quality of vocatives and proper names by assessing its accuracy, readability and acceptability. This study applied descriptive qualitative research. Aside from getting data from The Hobbit, the data are gotten from target readers’ and expert raters’ questionnaire. Based on the analysis, the translator applied 9 techniques in translating 75 vocatives. In dealing with proper names, the translator used 7 translation techniques. This study reveals that the translator adopted more foreignization ideology in rendering vocatives and proper names into Indonesian. It can be concluded that the translator intend to keep the originality of this novel, since he mostly copied the name of characters and georagphical name that appeared in this novel. Dealing with the quality of translation, it is proved that there are various translation quality of vocatives and proper names found in The Hobbit. It covers accurate, less accurate, inaccurate, acceptable, less acceptable, inacceptable, high readability, sufficient readability and low readability translation.

Abstract

Learning kanji is generally difficult for the Japanese learners because its figure, stroke order, and pronounce (onyomi and kunyomi) are difficult to remember. Moreover, every object in the world is presented by kanji. Thus, practically there are large in numbers of kanji. Remembering all the kanji and also the jukugo is not easy. Most of the students may easily forget it soon after they learn it. Therefore, they have to find effective, fun, and easy learning methods to improve their ability in mastering kanji. The bottom line is that they must consistently review the kanji they have learned to ensure that they would never-ever forget them. Otherwise, no matter how memorable the kanji are, they make up its nature to start forgetting and lose track of them once they start learning their 500th kanji and beyond. Flashcards could be a good solution to overcome the problem. It could help students consistently review the kanji, especially the jukugo.

Abstract

This study examines the naming of Padang restaurants in Surabaya. The results show that there are two strategies that business owners use in naming their Padang home businesses, namely by using convergence and divergence strategies. The choice of name related to the convergence strategy is the name of the owner; prayer and hope; place name; natural conditions; words that are allocated with food; words that reflect nationalism. Whereas the selection of names using the divergence strategy relates to the names of relatives, names of kings and respected people; place name; names related to togetherness and circumstances; and the name that is allocated with the taste of food. Semantically, the word used in naming Padang restaurants refers to a concept that describes the norms, values and outlook on life of the Minangkabau people.

Abstract

The birth and existence of Indonesian Massive Open Online Course (IMOOC) facilitate English teachers in Indonesia to improve their English teaching skills and explore various potential digital tools to help promote autonomous learning in their language classrooms. To prove this fact I did a qualitative survey on 17 English teachers as the IMOOC participants from Central Java. I gave them questionnaires through a Google Form. By using this data collection technique I got their responses on the importance and advantage of the Indonesian MOOC as Technology for Autonomous Learning in their English classroom context and situation. Based on the survey data, it was known that the participants: 1) had not followed MOOCs (60%), 2) did not know the advantages of MOOC (70%), 3) knew IMOOC (86%), 4) were interested in following IMOOC (100%), 5) became autonomous learners (90%), 6) were upgrading their ICT competence for English teaching (100%), 7) were improving their career as English teachers (100%). From this survey, I have much invaluable information to map the role and function of the Indonesian MOOC for English teaching and learning autonomously. The Indonesian MOOC is really significant for English teachers to face a global era, especially for their digital literacy competence.

Abstract

Due to the pandemic situation, there is a shift in the scientific writing learning process. The process changes from offline to online, where lecturers and students must be more active and involved in the learning process through website tutorials with Microsoft Teams application synchronously and asynchronously through LMS UT. However, such a learning process also experiences problems both with wifi or the internet and the involvement and motivation of students in following it. To complete asynchronously using LMS UT, the research team focused on developing online learning media based on Task-based Language Teaching and android video. This study aims to create online learning media based on Task-Based Language Teaching and android video on writing material for Classroom Action Research to improve understanding and writing Classroom Action Research. The subjects of this research are 3rd-semester students at the Open University. The research method is the development method using a modified 4-D model of instructional development of Thiagarajan, Semmel, and Semmel (4-D model). The process of data collection is done by interview, observation, and filling out a questionnaire. The results of developing online learning media based on Task-Based Language Teaching and android video are suitable for the hybrid writing learning process. Students can be communicative in the web tutorial process. Student learning outcomes are already above the average indicator of 75% through the developed learning media. In addition, students responded positively in their involvement in the learning process using Task-Based Language Teaching-based media and android video.

Abstract

Rapid global development brings some changes in our physical environment. Literary work as a social media need to play a role in encouraging people’s understanding and awareness of the threatened condition of our natural surroundings. Poetry as one of literary genres often depict nature as the image and poetic representation. Romantic British poetry is one tradition that remarkably delineates and glorifies the beauty of nature as their poetic manifesto. In America, there was  transcendentalism that similarly cherished the glory of nature through the transcendentalists’ works such as poetry and fiction. In contemporary American poetry, the splendor of nature again emerges as poetics in many of their works. However, different from their previous modern poetic tradition, this contemporary one put forward nature not just as image but also convey some criticisms towards environmental problems.

Abstract

With regard to the role of English in Indonesia that is mainly used for academic purpose, it is important to sharpen the two skills, reading and writing, more than the other two skills, listening and speaking. Based on that fact, this study focuses on reading skills, especially in reading comprehension skills. Reading comprehension skill is closely related to literacy levels that nowadays considered important by educational institution. The data was taken from reading comprehension questions in English USBN question sheet and the students’ answer sheets. The participants are students of XII grade of SMK NU Ungaran that are randomly chosen. The result of this study showed that Out of 50 students, 59% of them are best cope with editing task, followed by 56% in dealing with reading comprehension task, 50% of gap-filling task, 48% with short answer task and the least is 22% in vocabulary task. This meant that the proficiency level of reading comprehension of students in XII grade SMK NU Ungaran still needs to elevate. They were still lack in term of vocabulary and understanding the ideas implicitly delivered in the text.
