The Analysis of Pure Borrowing Technique in Indonesian Translation of “Does My Head Look Big in This” Novel

Abstract

The process of translation is beyond finding equivalents in the target language (TL) or conveying the general meaning of the source language (SL). For having an acceptable and understandable rendering, some techniques and strategies should be selected as the basis of translating. In ‚Does my head look big in this‛ novel the translator used some techniques but this study only aimed at analyzing the pure borrowing technique. It is a technique in the translation to take a word directly from the SL into the TL without any adjustment. The data of this study were collected by selecting the pure borrowing words found in all chapter of the novel. The result of the analysis shows that there are 85 pure borrowing words used in this novel. The words consist of 4 word classes namely noun, verb, exclamation, and adjective. The calculation mentions 88 % of the pure borrowing words are nouns, 6 % are adjective, 4 % are verb, and 2 % are exclamation. Applying appropriate techniques such as pure borrowing in translating might be needed in order to make the translation product reliable and acceptable for the reader but the translator must consider some aspects that might be related to the translation works itself

Abstract

This study analyzes code switching used in conversations by an American student of the darmasiswa program, addressing four objectives to find out the types and the functions of code switching, the possible factors that cause the occurence of code switching, and the impacts of code switching to the abilities of involved languages.The approach of this study is qualitative. The researcher applies mixed techniques to obtain data; recording the conversations in natural setting and interview. The analysis is interpretive.The findings of this study indicate that three types of code switching found in the conversations; intersentential code switching, intrasentential code switching, and tag/emblematic switching. They are used for various functions due to several reasons. The most significant function is to emphasize the message which gets the highest percentage (27.6%) and intention to clarify the speech content to the other interlocutors is the most significant factor causing code switching whichgets highest percentage (40.8%).It is found that code switching gives impact to the abilities of involved languages in conversations. It results in the loss of English language ability and the gain of Indonesian language ability.

Abstract

Speaking English skills is a frightening thing for some English for Foreign Language Learners (EFL), including students at one of the universities in Jakarta. Even though they live and stay in Jakarta and its surroundings, which is the capital city of Indonesia with high job competition, there are still many students who have a low level of English speaking skills. This study aims to determine the relationship between English speaking skills and their closeness to English as seen from the 5 levels of students' proficiency in speaking English. This research uses the descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of this study were 2 classes with a total of 60 students at a university in Jakarta in the 2019-2020 school year. Researchers used tests, questionnaires, interviews, and literature studies as data collection techniques. While the data analysis technique used by researchers is using data triangulation. The results of this study indicate that the closer they are to English in their daily lives, both by frequently reading English articles, frequently watching English films, often listening to English music, the better the students' level of English speaking skills.

Abstract

his study aims to (1) develop learning models of happiness in learning French through literary works, and (2) to describe the application of learning models of happiness in learning French through literary works. The study applied a qualitative approach with two designs in exploratory research (1) to produce a learning model of happiness and (2) action research to evaluate the implementation of the learning model in the field. Data collection techniques are conducted through (1) in-depth interviews with French experts, (2) literary experts; and (3) psychologists to gain an important point of learning happiness. Then from the results of in-depth interview was compiled draft learning model of happiness through focus group discussion This research was conducted at Universitas Negeri Semarang, with research time from March to October 2017.The results of this research are the model of happiness teaching with ASSURE model which includes analyzing the students, formulating specific learning objectives, choosing methods, media, and teaching materials, utilizing media and teaching materials, requesting student response, and evaluation.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to describe how the participants show spontaneity features, to describe how the participants show interpersonal function, to describe the information flow among the participants and to describe how the participants achieve coherence and relevance in the conversation of TV talk show of Talk Indonesia. This study applied descriptive qualitative research. The data were taken from two videos of talk show entitle Talk Indonesia that was broadcasted in Metro TV. The data were analyzed by using conversation analysis. Conversation analysis was used to analyze or investigate the structure and process of social interaction between humans. It was a kind of discourse analysis method that focuses primarily on talk (Cameron, 2001:48). The result of this study showed that there were some various spoken features found in the conversation of talk show for instance spontaneity, Interpersonality, interactivity and coherence features. Each of features had some aspects. The finding showed that among participants showed the spoken text features variously. Although some overlaps and interruptions occurred in the conversation, the talk show could still run well.
Glorification of Masculinity in the Advertisements of Kool Shaving Cream/Foam: A Critical Discourse Analysis

Abstract

Advertisement pervades our daily life with strong hold and affects our beliefs and psychological orientation extensively. It is a very effective podium for popularizing products as well as spreading ideologies. Advertisement is one of the dominant platforms of carrying discourses to the masses. The present study is an investigation done from a critical point of view of the advertisements of Kool shaving foam/cream by analyzing the speeches, linguistic and literary devices, character portrayal and physical setting of the advertisements. For the findings, analysis and discussion Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) based on Fairclough’s Three Dimension Approach is applied. The analysis reveals that while circulating and advertising of Kool shaving foam/cream the advertisers have concurrently disseminated patriarchal ideologies and masculine discourses that have long been being lived out in our society as discursive practices. It is also found that at the end of each sample advertisement it is the veneration of masculinity, not the circulation of the product, which is significantly highlighted.

Abstract

This study was intended to evaluate an existing writing curriculum in an English education program. The curriculum evaluation was conducted through a needs analysis, focusing on the needs of the students in the program. It is hoped that the result of the study would provide useful information for the program about writing curriculum they are implementing. There were four aspects of the curriculum that this study investigated: (1) the goals/objectives of the writing courses, (2) the approaches/methodology, (3) the classroom management, and (4) the class/program resources. More specifically, this study intended to know whether the course objectives/goals were appropriate with the needs of the students, whether the approaches/methodology were contextual and met the needs of the students, whether the classroom management was effective, and whether the class/program resources adequate to implement the goals/objectives. The study was categorized as a case study since it was a certain case happened in a certain context. The same case may not happen to other contexts that have different characteristics to the context of this study. The study employed qualitative/descriptive design by utilizing four methods of data collection: (1) document analysis, (2) classroom observations, (3) questionnaire, and 4) interview. The analysis of the data was conducted throughout the study; once a piece of data was gained, it was analyzed right away. The data was coded and categorized which then allowed for generating findings. There are four major findings of this study: (1) the goal/objectives of the writing courses were appropriate to the students’ needs; however, the courses did not accommodate the realization of the goals/objectives, (2) the approaches/methodology, to some degree, were not contextual and did not meet the needs of the students, (3) the classroom management, to some extent, was not effective, and (4) the class/program resources, for certain aspects, were adequate to implement the goals/objectives of the courses.   Key Words: curriculum, needs analysis, approach, method, classroom management

Abstract

Tajik poetry deviated from its mainstream with the victory of the communist revolution. The imposition of Russian language and the new communist literature made Tajik poetry to take influence from the works of Russian romantic poets and to have new themes. Meanwhile, it benefited from the ancient Persian poets and one can see the rhetorical figures such as metaphor, simile, conflict, pun, Īhām, proverb, husn-i ta'lil (good reason), imagery and paradox in the works of Tajik poets. Additionally, Bīdel's poem has also had a clear influence on the poetry of some contemporary poets. Tajik poetry is very close to the informal language of the people, and in these poems, we encounter words that are specific to the Tajik dialect. The first Persian she'r-e now (new poetry) in Central Asia was written by Sadriddin Ayni. In Tajik poetry, we occasionally encounter with recurrences, the nostalgia of the missed glory, the oppression of the nation, and the unwanted fate of their ancestors. In these poems, they rely on emotion and content, and the epic and passionate tone prevail other poetic performances. The present study gives a general overview of the poetry of some Tajik poets.

Abstract

Critical thinking is important in university because students can have some benefits e.g. (1) achieving better marks; (2) reducing their dependency on teachers and text books; and (3) creating their knowledge. Therefore, students are supposed to be able to apply critical thinking skills to all their academic reading, writing, listening and discussing. Book Report and Review is one of the subjects taught in English Department of Unnes. Writing book reviews is not only informational, but also analytic and persuasive. In doing it, consequently, students are required to have critical thinking skills in analysing the content, format, argument, and context to argue that the book is worth reading or not. In order to display critical thinking, they need to develop skills in interpreting, analysing, reasoning, and evaluating. This presentation will focus on how to develop teaching strategies that can foster students' critical thinking in writing book reviews. It will discuss the concept of critical thinking for undergraduate students, its implementation in teaching writing book reviews, and its assessment in students' book review writing texts.

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of humor as English foreign language teaching material to improve students’ speaking skill with of high or low motivation for the students and the effect that the use of humor gives to their teaching. This study was quasi experimental research named two-way (two-by-two) factorial design. The subjects were 80 students of STAIN Kudus, 40 students in the experimental group and 40 students in the control group. Both groups were distributed the pre-test to measure students' speaking skill. For treatment, Shade's (1996) classification of verbal humor was used. The results revealed that humor as teaching material has significant effect on the students’ speaking skill to those who have high and low learning motivation. The students expressed that humor in the classroom situation affected their learning positively to those who have high or low motivation rather than conventional material.
