“Listening is Hard”: ADDIE Model on the Development of English Listening Worksheets

Abstract

The authors’ pre-observation showed that when students learn listening skills, the students faced some difficulties. The students found difficulty expressing their ideas because they found many complex vocabularies, the audio text uses advanced grammar, and the native speaker speaks too fast. Therefore, to solve those students’ problems, the authors proposed to develop the appropriate listening worksheet for the English education study program of IAIN Palopo. Then, the authors applied Research and Development method and used the ADDIE model. 18 students of the English education study program IAIN Palopo were involved as the research subject. The research instruments used were observation and questionnaire. From observing, analysing students’ needs, developing the materials, evaluating expert judgments, conducting try-out materials, revising the product, the final product of this study is listening worksheets stored in a compact disc. The worksheets consist of a course grid, learning objective, language note, pre-activity, whilst-activity and post-activity. The authors expect that this worksheet will be useful for EFL teachers whose students' listening skills are still below the expected level of competence.

Abstract

Structural Linguistics is an approach to linguistics originating from the work of Swiss Linguist Ferdinand de Saussure. Saussure stressed examining language as a static system of interconnected units. Structural Linguistics involves collecting a corpus of utterances and then applying discovery procedures to them in an attempt to classify all of the elements of the corpus at their different linguistic levels as the phonemes, morphemes, word classes, noun phrases, verb phrases, and sentence types. After Saussure, the history of Structural Linguistics branches off in two separate directions. First, in America, linguist Leonard Bloomfield's reading of Saussure's course proved influential, bringing about the Bloomfieldean phase of phase in American Linguistics that lasted from the mid 1930s to the mid 1950s. Second, in Europe, Saussure influenced the Prague School of Roman Jakobson and Nikolai Trubetzkoy, whose work would prove hugely influential, particularly concerning phonology, and the Copenhagen School of Louis Hjelmslev. Teaching methods which are based on structral linguistics are ASTP (Army Specialized Training Program) and Audio Lingual Method (AL-Method) also known as Michigan Method, Fries Method, or Oral Approach. During World War II (1943-1044), there were 20 countries which used these teaching methods including Japan, and brought a great result especially in Japanese language education.   Keywords: Structural Linguistics, Saussure, ASTP, Audio Lingual Method,  Japanese Language Education

Abstract

A variety of technologies are all around us in our homes, offices, and schools. Today, students are familiar with number of applications of computer network technology such as multimedia, email, electronic journals, databases, World Wide Web, chat, blog, audio social media and video conferencing etc. Technology plays a positive role in promoting activities and initiatives of the students in English classroom. Interactive teaching and technology put the emphasis on communication, interaction, and discussion between teachers and students as well as the positivity of teachers and students in the teaching and learning process. The fact that by providing technology and applying interactive teaching can make the students be active and creative so that the teacher should know how to provide the technology in teaching and learning process. The aim of this paper is to explore some activities in interactive teaching and provide how to apply them in EFL classroom by providing the use of technology such as digital storytelling, podcast, clipped students, conversation analysis from YouTube, apposite arguments, and Powtoon.

Abstract

The objectives of teaching kanji characters are among other things that while reading them the learners are able to understand their meaning, to know their forms and how to read them. In speed reading, thorough understanding of such writing system is obligatory. However, the students of Japanese Language Education still face difficulties in understanding such system. What they obtain is merely memorization of the characters; they are unable to read particular characters which are put side by side with other similar characters. Besides, they are also confused when learning the large number of the characters. In order to overcome the difficulties, the writer has provided a correct way of learning how to read such writing system through the following procedures: pay attention to the form of the characters (radical/bushu), pay attention to their sounds (ompu), read the characters, understand their meanings (imi) through learning them at word level (goi reberu). 漢字の学習目標は、読むときに漢字が理解できるようになることで、書くときに漢字が使えることに大別される。読むときに漢字が理解できるためには、漢字の意味を知っていること、漢字の読み方を知っていること、漢字の形が認識できること、漢字語彙の意味がかわり、文を読む際にある程度の遠さで理解することが必要となる。スマラン国立大学の日本語教育プログラムにおいて漢字学習者の場合、初期段階では漢字の形を見分けることが困難なことが多い。そこで、まず、単漢字レベルで漢字の形を提示し、意味、音と対応付けるような活動を行うことが多い。また、漢字を字源やイメージとむすびつけたりストリーを作ったりして意味を記憶するなどの方法もとられる。漢字の学習困難を克服するため、「漢字の形に注目する方法、漢字の読みに注目する方法、漢字の意味に注目する方法、単語レベル方法」の方法を使うのがいいと思う。

Abstract

During the Covid-19 outbreak, with more than one billion school closures occurring worldwide, all teaching and learning interactions have to be conducted online, and it is a challenge for teachers (and learners) to adapt to this sudden shift because most educational institutions were not yet ready. However, regardless of the pandemic, in the era where technology plays a huge part in the advancement of human civilization, it is time for the global education system to evolve and begin incorporating technology into its implementation. Once the pandemic is over, teachers (and learners) will then have the opportunity to choose their medium of teaching and learning interactions, whether it is offline or online. Thus, this study examined and compared the advantages and disadvantages of both offline and emergency remote online teaching. The data were collected through Focus Group Discussion. Several prompts were used as discussion starters, but the researchers allowed the participants to share their opinions freely and let the data speak. The data were then analyzed and coded using thematic analysis. Researchers then made a summary of synthesis assumptions based on and supported by evidence from the data corpus. The findings revealed that teachers tend to favor offline teaching for its direct teacher-student interactions, although the high number of students in one class can be a challenge. Whereas online teaching is preferred for its time-efficiency and flexibility, albeit its technological complexity.

Abstract

Translation has exposed a number of problems related to the linguistic domain. Suchproblems may stem from socio-cultural differences between the source language and thetarget language. They may also stem from the differences of the grammatical featuresbetween the two languages. Therefore, such problems have influenced the effort of achievingcorrespondence as well as equivalence; one of such problems is the existence of formalnonequivalence. This research aims to solve the problems of (1) how such formalnonequivalence appears in the translation of behavioral clauses and (2) how to achievefunctional equivalence through the presence of formal nonequivalence. This study wasdirected to deliberately analyze a written text in English and its translation in Indonesian. Itwas found out that formal nonequivalence may occur in word, phrase, and clause levels.Such formal nonequivalence has, however, facilitated the effort of achieveing functionalequivalence at clause level. In order to materialize functional equivalence at the clause level,the translation has been done by means of maintaining behavioral clauses or restructuringthem to form material clauses, mental clauses, or verbal clauses.

Abstract

A dialogue carries feelings and thoughts of a character in a story. It might also convey emotional expressions. In the translating process, emotional expression, one of many factors which needs to be considered, is regarded as expressive meaning. Thus, in translating dialogues, it is necessary to preserve the emotional expression of the source language. As translation process involves two different languages, there could be changes occurred from ST to TT. Therefore, this study aims to use translation shift to seek the changes in dialogue translation in some short stories in Karyamin’s Smile. This research is a qualitative-descriptive analysis as it proposes to identify the types of shift used in dialogue translation and analyze the equivalence to the ST. The dialogues that have been categorized were examined the equivalence using a translation assessment rubric proposed by Khanmohammad and Osanloo (2009). The result shows that each type of shift used more or less affects the equivalence of dialogue translation. The types of shift that are mostly appeared are structure shift and unit shift. Those types produce some patterns. The patterns found in structure shift are passive to active forms, affirmative to interrogative sentence, affirmative to imperative sentence. In unit shift, the patterns found are word to phrase, phrase to sentence, and word to sentence. In sum, structure shift can create more significant changes compared to unit shift as the patterns found mostly result in the changing intention of dialogues.
DEVELOPING ENGLISH MATERIALS USING ENGLISH-INDONESIAN MIXED SONG LYRICS TO TEACH VOCABULARY

Abstract

The fifth graders of Isriati Baiturrahman 2 Elementary School Semarang had problems to study English Vocabulary. They didn’t enjoy to study English vocabulary using drill and writing method done by the teacher. They need the interactive English materials which make them enjoy to study English, especially to improve their vocabulary. This study employed Research and Development design to develop the English materials using English-Indonesia mixed song lyrics to teach Vocabulary. Observation, questionnaire, interview, validation, and pre-test also post test were administered to collect the data. From the results of data collection the writer found that using English-Indonesian mixed song lyrics is effective to teach vocabulary. The average score of pretest was 67,00 and of post-test was 88,38. It means that English-Indonesia mixed song lyrics to teach vocabulary could be implemented in improving the learners’ vocabulary competence. Therefore, English teachers are suggested to employ the English-Indonesian mixed song lyrics for their future teaching materials.

Abstract

Jack Frost may not be as popular as Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, Sandman, and Tooth Fairy in the tradition of Western fairy tales. However, having observed Peter Ramsey’s Rise of the Guardians, it is quite ‘enlightening’ to perceive Jack Frost positioned not only as a mere Hollywood’s animated hero, but as complex one. One of the complexities studied in this case resides in the initiation and transformational process he has to undergo. This article overviews the relation between such process and his position as the archetypal hero. Making use archetypal approach, this article intends to explain the issue. The result indicates that his portrayal in the movie as the archetypal hero experiencing archetypal initiation and transformation is influenced by some factors: interaction with other Guardians and children, quest for self-identity, and his relation with nature.
The Use of Repetition as Self-Repair of an Efl Learner

Abstract

Self-repair is one of the language learning strategies of second language learners that are distinctly different from each other. This study aims to investigate the use of repetition as self-repair in academic speaking. The researcher tried to find the types of lexical elements which frequently repeated in the academic speaking and dig up the underlying reason behind the repetition as self-repair. A case study was conducted using human instruments and interviews to collect the data. Once the data filled, the researcher analyzed the data by implementing a data archive, trying to expand the codes, evaluating the data sets, and wrapping up the data. The findings from this study revealed that the participants in this study might have used English in speech situations in which they would have used recycling the mistake word. The result of the study found that the participant did indeed self-repair Type D, which consisted of repetition and replacement of one lexical item, and nouns became the most repeated lexical item in the academic speaking. This was a delay strategy as she waited to restart the speech as she needed to think about the next word so that the listeners didn't misinterpret her. Twisted tongue and slip of tongue as a result of the participant’s first language interference contributed to the repetition of certain lexical elements as self-repair.
