Interlanguage Errors Based on the Source of Errors in Indonesian College Students’ Pronunciation

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the source of IL errors on male and female students’ pronunciation. The participants in this research were ten college students who were participated in an English speech contest organised by English Student Association of UNNES 2019. The ten participants consist of five male and five female students who came from different kinds of University in Indonesia. In this study, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data by using a video recorder as an instrument to collect the data. The result of this research showed that there were four sources of errors which influenced male and female students in producing IL errors on pronunciation. Those were L1 transfer, different form of plural between L1 and L2, the existence of sounds with the same phonetic features but different in distribution, and English foreign sounds. The second result described that the source of errors on male and female college students was mostly similar, and they had no significant differences. Last result showed that male students made more variation of IL errors on their pronunciation than female students.

Abstract

This study aims at finding out a concrete picture of intercultural-bound English speaking material used in English department of UniversitasNegeri Semarang. Specifically, this study deeply examines the intercultural component attached in English teaching material used in speaking classroom by employing Intercultural Communicative Competence theory. This study uses qualitative method, and case study design. The data was collected by using observation, interview, as well as documentation study techniques; and was validated by using triangulation method which encompasses data source triangulation, researcher triangulation, theory triangulation, as well as methodology triangulation. Results show that the teaching material in form of textbook used by lecturers in English Department of UniversitasNegeri Semarang has implicitly and explicitly embedded the aspect of intercultural communication in a form of politeness. It was shown from the explanation, practices, as well as degree of formality provided in the textbook that the speaking material attempts to emphasize the teaching of culture in terms of politeness acceptable in the target language. Future research needs to be conducted focusing on kinds of politeness which have to be mastered by the students.

Abstract

The study aims to know good-life concepts of moral value in Robin Hood movie. This research used qualitative approach. The researcher found that five moral principles are tolerance, belief, kind-hearted, integrity, and responsibility. In this movie, good-live concepts of moral value are tolerance for human relationships with Heaven, belief is entrusting everything to God's power, kind‐hearted is honesty in this movie that the hero succeeded in winning people's hearts by his supporting honesty, integrity is like finding a valuable gem, and responsibility portrayed feels responsible for defense, reminding people of responsibility to protect their position in everywhere.

Communication makes use of language with its inherent features which are determined by its contents: context of culture and context of situation. Maritime communication falls within closed register which provides fixed realization which is ritualized having no other variation. Abstract

The world of literature is the result of human’s culture, where it can be the expression of one’s life experience which is influenced by a certain society of certain period. Practically, literature can sometimes help readers in understanding the condition of the society. Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist as one of literary works that contains culture and life of Victorian era has described clearly about all the things that is going on in the 19th century of London. The novel satirizes the poor living condition, unemployment, poverty, and social class at that time. It also attacts the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834 and the workhouse system that causes suffer to the poor and increases crime. Using sociological approach as one of the study that learns about the social condition of certain culture, Crimes in the 19th Century London in Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist is chosen as the title of the study is to find out the kinds of crimes exist in London and the causing factors that increase the number of crimes. The result of the study shows that the kind of crime exists in the 19th century of London as shown in Oliver Twist is pick-pocketing, thievery, robbery, burglary, house-breaking, and murder. While the causing factors that increase crime are unemployment and poverty, Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834 and the workhouse, and social class and social gap.

Abstract

Teaching English for young learners always gets more attention. It is because young learners are very unique. They have many characters which can change rapidly in one time. Sometimes, they display an enthusiasm for learning and a curiosity about the world around them. They also have a need for individual attention and approval from the teacher. They are keen to talk about themselves, and respond well to learning that uses themselves and their own lives as main topics in the classroom. However, they also have a limited attention span. They can easily get bored, losing interest after ten minutes if the activities are not extremely engaging.Considering those characters, there should be good ways how to treat children in delivering materials. One of ways is by exposing and utilizing children‘s senses. The senses are Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, Olfactory, and Gustatory (VAKOG). It will be very useful because a teacher not only gives something to be seen but also invites them to get involved mentally and physically. In this case, the teacher will prepare a set of teaching material where this material has very tight relationship with activities done in class. For instance, when teacher will teach part of body, she or he will prepare some pictures, songs, games, and other activities related to body‘s part. These are intended to strengthen children‘s knowledge.

Abstract

The aim to be reached in conducting this study is to develop suitable English materials for the students of the Information System Department at Technology and Information Faculty of Mathlaul Anwar University so that they can study what they need to learn. The development will produce an English textbook (module) that is relevant to the objective of curriculum and the needs of the students. It is expected that lecturers and the students can take advantage of the product of the development. The design of this study is categorized under Research and Development (RD) with analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation. From the research that has been done, it can be concluded that the module is developed which is more valid, practical and effective. The analysis of the validity of the module can be seen from the aspect of content and presentation. The future suggestion for other researchers is to develop an English language module specifically for education. Students need a special book that is more relevant to be a reference for using English in the context of teaching. Because English is an international language, English course in the Information System Department is expected to contribute to all aspects of life, especially when the students graduate from university

Abstract

Vowel spacearea (VSA) represents kinematic movements of the articulators and measures speech intelligibility. By looking at the vowel space area, the current study intends to examine the role of Minangkabau in the acquisition of English as a second language. We conducted a speech production experiment involving ten English monophthongs in isolated sentences. We measured the formant frequencies (F1/F2) values and computed the vowel quadrilateral. The results showed that the Minangkabau learners of English did not have similar VSA pattern when compared to the native English speakers. They did not open the jaws and move the tongues as similar as the native English speakers in pronouncing English vowels. The results were discussed in the area of second language acquisition.

Abstract

This paper aims to describe the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PBL) Method in Linguistic and Educational Research classroom. PBL is defined as “a systematic teaching method that engages students in learning knowledge and skills through an extended inquiry process structured around complex, authentic questions and carefully designed products and tasks”, Markham, Larmer, and Ravitz (2003:4). The problem investigated is how the implementation of Project-Based Learning directs students in writing research proposal. The subjects were 30 students of the sixth semester of the English Department, Semarang State University, 2012-2013 academic year. The subject course provides students with knowledge of the aims, principles, and kinds of linguistic and educational research methods and designs and the skill and practice in constructing research proposals. Besides, the research class enriches students’ understanding about research as a scientific inquiry to solve problems through some stages such as identifying and formulating problem, gathering and analyzing data, and ways to publish the research results (Saleh, 2012). Therefore, equiping students with skills and experiences in writing research proposal is significantly important.
THEME EQUIVALENCE AND THEME SHIFT FOUND IN INDONESIAN-ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THESIS ABSTRACTS

Abstract

This study analyzes types of themes, theme equivalence, theme shifts in the Indonesian-English translation of thesis abstracts. The data consist of 10 thesis abstracts and their translation into English, taken from Postgraduate Program of Semarang State University from the last two years (2010-2011). The result shows that topical theme dominates the entire texts at 80.16% (198 out of 247) in ST and 79.56% (222 out of 279) in TT. Interpersonal theme is not found both in ST and TT. Most topical themes are in participants, followed by circumstance and process. The textual theme in both texts is adjunct conjunctive. Most of the themes (70.2%) are considered as non shift or equivalent. The theme shift occurrs through three processes: (1) by changing the grammatical function within the theme (11.7%), (2) by adding more themes (14.7%) and (3) by deleting themes (3.4%). It is suggested for a translator to have complete mastery over the grammatical structure of both the SL and TL and also being aware of the notions and application of shifts and equivalence.
