Abstract

Looking at the frequently used English words on billboard ads in Jakarta main streets, one may have a presumptive thought that English will dominate Indonesian language. The assumption, though, has led to the analysis of the role of both languages on billboard ads and the possibility of English control over Indonesian. The study presented purposive language uses. English, regardless of its incorrect use, was associated with the Indonesian modern, urban and youth’s lifestyle, hence the prestigious status of English. On the other hand, Indonesian and its dialects, particularly the Betawi-Indonesian, are employed to cover wider and broader range of audience. Indonesian language is a national identity of Indonesians, and has historically gained highest status among hundreds of local languages in Indonesia. Thus, in spite of the presence of English in Indonesian language use, the former will not diminish the latter. As a matter of fact, the two languages serve different types of readers.

Abstract

Abstract: Studying the reading competence of Indonesian EFL within the framework of bilingualism can be challenging for language researchers. That may be because the area has not yet deeply explored by Indonesian researchers, while Indonesia provides a vast array of data due to its diverse linguistic background. The present small study investigates the English scanning skills of forty-three Indonesian EFL primary level students. Forty nine percent of the subjects are monolinguals, i.e. they use only Indonesian both at home and school. The rest are bilinguals: they use Indonesian and local languages interchangeably at home. The result of the study shows that in general the Indonesian monolinguals have a better performance in comparison to their bilingual counterparts.  Keywords: bilingualism, scanning skills, reading comprehension  KETERAMPILAN MELAKUKAN SCANNING DALAM BAHASA INGGRIS PARA SISWA INDONESIA BERDWIBAHASA DAN BEREKABAHASA Abstrak: Kemampuan membaca dalam Bahasa Inggris dari para siswa Indonesia dalam kerangka kedwibahasaan cukup menantang untuk diteliti oleh para peneliti bahasa. Katakunci: kedwibahasaan, scanning, pemahaman bacaan

Abstract

This article focuses on non-commercial signs in the linguistic landscape of Jakarta. Five main streets within or nearby the centroid of Jakarta are selected. The prevalence of English and the use of English words in the non-commercial signs are examined. The data cover 47 non-commercial signs which are investigated from the perspective of place semiotics. Despite their small number, this category of sign, mainly those that belong to the Regulatory discourse, holds a legal power. The presence of the non-commercial signs signifies the power of the state and communicates vertical and horizontal relationships between the authority and the audience. The findings suggest that the Infrastructural discourse is mostly available and Indonesian is the dominant language. English is present to a certain extent, particularly with regard to content related to technology and English prestigious status. Semantically, few English words had meaning extension when used in Indonesian context. The language choice of the non-commercial signs indicates the exclusiveness of Jakarta linguistic landscape.

Abstract

The present study aims at raising young students’ awareness of natural disasters through a cross-disciplinary multimodal project-based learning method using Vygotsky’s (1986) socio-cultural approach. An Art project was carried out by second-grade students of one private bilingual school in Jakarta. The project, which was group work, included discussing which objects could save lives from the disaster, drawing the objects, and presenting the work in front of the class. All discussions and presentations were audio recorded. The objects and the recording were then analysed to identify students’ knowledge about surviving three common natural disasters in Indonesia, i.e., earthquake, tsunami, and volcanic eruption. The findings indicate that the students have an initial knowledge about how to survive the disasters, but their literacy on disaster mitigation is still low. It is recommended that literacy on natural disasters should be part of the curriculum and implemented consistently.

Abstract

The English language competence of an EFL learner can be reflectedin his pragmatic competence. Yet, for language learners and teachers a mastery of the pragmatic competence may unconsciously be neglected. In other words, it may not be taught in line with the grammatical competence since the initial period of learning. The article centers on two problems: (1) the similarities and differences of speech act of complaints among Indonesian EFL learners, Indonesian EFL teachers and American native speakers, and (2) the evidence of any pragmatic transfer in the complaint performance. DCT was used to gather the data, which was then analyzed using Rinnert, Nogami and Iwai?s aspects of complaining (2006). It was found that there were both differences and similarities of complaints performed by both the native and non-native speakers of English when power and social status were involved. Some evidence on pragmatic transfer was also tangible; mainly it was due to cultural differences

Abstract

Nowadays, EFL reading textbooks have adjusted their level of linguistic difficulties to their prospective users and provide texts about a variety of topics, detailed explanation of reading skills and practices, not to mention the smart lay-out and good quality of paper, all aiming at facilitating both students and teachers to successfully learn and teach reading, respectively. However, having qualified reading textbooks, teachers cannot take for granted that their students will directly appreciate reading and the textbook selected for the course because in some places extensive reading may not be part of the people's routine, and may not be considered to be very important by the authority. This article provides several useful techniques to take a full advantage of textbooks in A. M. Da Silva, Making the Best Use ofa Textbook 21 EFL reading classrooms in the aforementioned context.

Abstract

The job of a secretary is probably one of the most popular vacancies advertised in Indonesian mass-media. Many profit and non-profit organizations seekfor professional secretaries because of the central role the profession holds. A secretary is an assistant to her employer, and oftentimes she becomes not only lithe hands" but also lithe eyes" of her employer, indicating the wide range of work a secretary carries out. Despite of the heavy workload of the profession. there are still many female undergraduates who do not hesitant to begin or make a career as a secretary. Perhaps that is because basically the job requires administrative skills, which can be simply acquired through a lot of practices. Responding to the phenomenon, universities that run English Department have offered an English for Secretary (hereinafter referred to as EFS) course. Unfortunately, to date there have not been many books on EFS available in Indonesia. As a result, EFS teachershave to create the syllabus and prepare the materials themselves or use the old version of any EFS book available.Factually, the EFS syllabus should be created based on an actual and careful needs analysis so that the students taking the course would enjoy maximum benefit. This article focuses on designing a syllabus based on interviews with professional secretaries. Hence this article will discuss the importance of needs analysis, the structured interviews, the result of the interviews, and the proposed syllabus. There were 20 professional secretaries intervieweed about the secretarial job description, skills, and behaviour and attitudes. The result is hitherto a secretary stillgoes to the folloWing routine: handling callers, corresponding, filling, organizing meeting, and scheduling, which are relevant to the essential skills such as communication, computer and language skills; and pertinent to the behavior and attitudes a secretary should have: reliability, fast working, honesty, and autonomous learning. Thus, the planned EFS syllabus will accommodate what the interviewees have noted.

Abstract

The community service aims at providing free English lessons and English vocabulary learning modules to grade 3 and 4 students in one learning community in Duren Sawit East Jakarta through a six-week teaching program that is integrated with one subject offered in the Master Program of Applied English Linguistics at Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia. Ten master students became the voluntary teachers (together with other volunteers). The program is a continuation of a similar program held from January to June 2019 by the first author. The student-teachers used a variety of learning approaches and methods that are predicted to suit the students’ needs. They identified that different groups of students required different approaches, materials, and activities in order to learn English enjoyably. It is suggested that future teacher volunteers use the ready-made modules as a basis of their teaching and continually adjust them based on the students’ needs. Another recommendation is the scaffolding-based learning method and the sustenance of the English program that appreciates the cultural, social and linguistic assets students brought to the class.
