Abstract

This study examines the relationship of the support provided by the interviewers on the test-taker perception and performance. There are two levels of support investigated: High Supporting Behavior (HSB) and Low Supporting Behavior (LSB). Ten participants sat in two interviews with two different interviewers applying LSB and HSB condition each. All participants completed a perception questionnaire at the end of the interviews. Twenty interview scripts were computed to determine the participants’ actual performance in three categories: (1) fluency, (2) lexical resources and (3) grammar complexity. The results of the study reveals that there are effects on performance but not perception.

Abstract

This study focuses on the use of academic language functions and the problems of their use in the process of teaching content subjects by using English as a means of instruction. Direct observation and recording were done to gather the data. Based on the overall data analysis and interpretation, the teachers have used academic language functions in English, but not all teachers use full-English in the teaching learning process. They applied academic language functions for the purpose of acquiring knowledge and skills. Furthermore, some teachers do not have adequate mastery of English because they just took a short English course. So, most content teachers sometimes find difficulties related to vocabulary/diction, grammar, pronunciation,  intonation and they often switched codes from English to Indonesian and vice versa. They have problems to express their idea in English due to their lack of vocabularies used and pronunciation. Therefore, it is suggested that content teachers himprove their competence especially in the classroom interaction using English.

Abstract

This study is meant to find out the apology strategies, to investigate the development strategies from the lowest to the highest semester students, and to explain how the pragmatic transfer interferes the apology strategis used by English Department students of Pekalongan University. This study used a qualitative descriptive design and written discourse completion tasks were employed to obtain the data. As a subject study, ten students were taken from each semester, so there were forty students overall. In analyzing the data, the students’ apologies were analyzed by using Holmes classification. The findings reveal that an explicit expression of apology, in particular, the strategy of expressing regret, is the most frequent apology strategy. Alerter and explanation are also used extensively. There is development of the use of apology strategies from the lowest to the highest semester students. With pragmatic transfer, pragma-linguistic transfer is dominated by linguistic features changing from Indonesian language to English, whereas the socio-pragmatic transfer is more dominated by a socio-culture changing from Indonesian to English, making it unacceptable in English language context.

Abstract

The purpose of present study is to critically assess the reading comprehension textbooks which have been prescribed for use at the English Education Department of Public Islamic Higher Education in West Sumatera. The writer used a criteria taken from Cunningswoth’ s (1995) and Miekley’s (2005). These include (1) Aims and Approaches; (2) Design and Organization; (3) Content; (4) Skills; (5) Vocabulary and Grammar; (6) Exercises and Activities; (7) Methodology; (8) Attractiveness of the Text and Physical Make-Up; (9) Teacher’s Manual; and (10) Practical Consideration. To interpret the checklist, the four rating scale was used, namely excellent, good, fair, and poor. The research showed that every textbook has strong and weak points. The result of this analysis could be used as the basis to gain more effective reading textbooks for the lecturer of reading comprehension.

Abstract

Language and culture are inseparable. When people communicate to one another, they take their culture in communication; they may use the same language, but differences in accent show their register.  Language variation covers distinctions in pronunciation, grammar, or word choice within a language. It includes register and accent. This concept is reflected in the performance of Ken Arok and Ken Dedes. In the performance, the register described a group of people and their roles in the community.  It is interesting to analyze English with Javanese accents and register in the drama performance. In this performance, speaking English with  Javanese accent does not reduce the traditional values of Javanese culture.

Abstract

STIEPARI students’ achievement was found to have declined during 2008 - 2010. Almost all language skills were affected. One attempt to rectify the problem was the creation of a program called STIEPARI Language Course (SLC). The natures of the data in this research were quantitative and qualitative. The quantitative data were taken from the post-test TOEFL scores of 30 STIEPARI students. The 30 students were divided into 2 groups, Experimental Class and Control Class. Experimental Class was taught using Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) method in the teaching learning process; on the other hand, Control Class was taught without using CLT. The qualitative data were taken from student comments on the STIEPARI Language Course (SLC). From the t-test analysis, the result shows that there is a significant difference between the mean score of post-test of the Experimental Class and the mean score of post-test of the Control Class. This result shows that, statistically, the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) method is an effective method to enhance students’ motivation in increasing TOEFL score. It should be mentioned, however, that TOEFL scores should be interpreted with care. To summarize students’ feedback on the STIEPARI Language Course (SLC), in general, both the Experimental Class and the Control Class learned a lot from the SLC. This comment is supported by the increase in TOEFL score.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative research aimed to analyze and describe translation technique, and its influence on the quality of the translation of international news in Seputar Indonesia daily. The data used in this research is the document of news text in the Internasional section of daily paper, the document of source text from which the translated text was taken, informant mastering translation field, giving information about the quality of the translation, and the journalist writing of the news. This research uses a purposive sampling technique.  Document analysis and interview were used as data collecting technique. From the analysis, it was identified the following translation techniques: Deletion, Addition, Modulation, Transposition, Established Equivalent, Particularization, Generalization, Borrowing, Reduction, Amplification,  and Calque.  Some techniques give positive effect on translation quality, while some others do not. The improper use of deletion and addition techniques reduce the accuracy, thus reducing the quality of the translation. The decision to use certain techniques is influenced by several factors, that is rules of journalism, the ideology of media, and media policies. The quality of the translation is described as follow: accurate for 34 (40%) translation, accurate with thematic differences for 6 (7%) translation, less accurate for 40 (46%) translation, and inaccurate for 6 (7%) translation.

Abstract

Reading texts for literary experience is different from reading them for information. Actually, there are two general stances (efferent and aesthetic stances) readers may choose when constructing meaning and responding to literature. In the efferent stance the reader’s purpose is primarily to gain information and analyze the author technique. The emphasis is on recalling, paraphrasing, and analyzing details. In the aesthetic stance the reader’s purpose is primarily to “live through” the experience presented in the text and to associate the text with personal experience and feelings. The emphasis is on personally connecting with the text as one reads, developing deeper insights into the human experience and responding thoughtfully to the ideas and insights presented. Thus, it is necessary to apply a strategy in teaching reading literary texts. One of useful strategies for comprehending and discussing literary selections is a snowballing strategy. To apply the strategy in teaching reading literary texts, action research is used as a research methodology. This research is carried out in one of the 4th semester classes, literature study program, Semarang State University.

Abstract

Academic literacy has long been discussed throughout the scientific disciplines. Such discussions have partly resulted in a sort of awareness in people’s mind concerning how we implement it in the areas of scientific disciplines we deal with. In the translation domain, we question how much the significance of such stuff is for the benefit of comprehensively analyzing text for inter-language rendering. This paper intends to provide an answer to such question. It deals with the use of relevant literacy to analyze any source text as a basis to produce a target text through transfer of meaning and reconstruction of language fulfilling the aspects of readability, accuracy, and naturalness.

Abstract

The integration of life skills in English language teaching has to be managed properly to achieve an optimal result. The exploration to the fields reveals some problems on their implementation: (1) classroom management, (2) selection of learning materials, (3) learning assessment, and (4) selection of learning methods. In addition, most teachers were fully satisfied with the existing model due to the following reasons: (1) requiring an extra preparation and teaching media, (2) incomplete communication task executions, and (3) inflexibility of model to apply in any class. To make the model of implementation better some recommendation are made: (1) incorporating materials reflecting life skills, (2) providing more comprehensible inputs, (3) developing a representative assessments, and (4) selecting a learning method that guide teacher to gradually develop communicative competence and simultaneously develop life skills.
