Abstract

This research is aimed to study problem of poverty in rural areas of West Sumatera. Operationally, this study has four objectives: (1) to analyze factors determining poverty, such as: land tenure, technology, education, health, access into institutional economies, and alternative profession; (2) to seek the relative poverty as indicated by land tenure distribution and income distribution; (3) to analyze discrepancies in land tenure distribution and income distribution between households clasified poor and not poor; and (4) to analyze discrepancies in income distribution between households with alternative professions and those without alternative professions; One of five hypotheses in this research turn out to be empirically unsupported; The difference between land tenure distribution among households classified not poor is insignificant. This may be due to the fact that this research is carried out in villages whose conditions are quite similar so that land tenure distribution between both categories of households does not vary.Key Words:  Poverty,  Land tenure distribution, Income distribution

Abstract

The growth of productivity (yield) will be the major source of rice production in the next some few years to come. However, the development of rice productivity is facing the limited government budgets and the continuation of the conversion of land function. Therefore, the rice farming need to be conducted more efficiently. It means that the management skills of farmers need to be improved. The objective of the study is to estimate the levels of efficiency of rice farming in Kediri and Nganjuk of East Java Province and to see its distribution among farmers, using stochastic frontier production function. The results of the study are expected to help the policy makers in designing and improving the agricultural extension strategy. Keywords: efficiency, productivity, stochastic frontier production function, management skills.

Abstract

The central theme of this paper is the measurement of income inequality by investigating its present time in Banyumas. It is important to know the impact of local development process on income inequality. Not only the impacts of local development, but also other factors determining the trend of income inquality (i.e.fuel price raises, price and income adjustment policies) give impact on present income inequality. Nowaydays, the local development policies and the other factors are predicted that they give impact on the raise of recent income inquality in Banyumas. Based on Gini coefficient measurement method, we obtain startling result. The result presented in this paper is based on a sample of 180 households including urban area, sub urban area and rural area. The Gini coefficient result is 0,603. This result shows the sharp raise of income inequality from past time to recent in Banyumas. The imbalance of development between modern sectors (i.e services, contruction, finance, trade and manufacture) and traditional sectors (i.e agriculture and informal sector) causes the raise of income inequality. Based on this trend of the raise of income inequality, local government must practice pro poor development policies without ignoring sustainable economic growth and especially focusing on agriculture, rural economy, informal sector, small and medium industries. Keywords: income inequality, Gini coefficient, pro-poor policy, sustainable growth

Abstract

Recently, Indonesian government released new regulations about RegionalMinimum Wages (UMR). The determination of the wages is a very complex thing, because it involves various interest groups that sometimes being exact opposite each other. The industrialists try to make the wages as low as posible, exactly the opposite of what labor's hope for. It is. unfortunately, simply because the wages are regarded negatively as an influential factor to the Industrial competitiveness in the global economy. This article discusses about the regulations. It concludes that it is necessary to be carefuland transparent in raising the UMR in order to balancing demand and supply of the labor force, so it will not shift the work intensive industry to capital intensive industry. It is also important to be careful in simplemeeting the regulations, especially to the small and medium industry. At this context, this article argues that it is necessary to create a man power act that can protect the labor. It also argues that SPSI (an Indonesian Labor Union)should be more aggresive to rise the bargaining power of the labor.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a model of Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) that relates between environmental pollution level and the prosperity level in Tangerang City. The method uses two models of pooled data regression technique namely, Random Effect Model (REM), and Fixed Effects Model (FEM) both quadratic and cubic. The period of observation is 2002-2012. The results suggest that relationship between per capita income and the level of environment quality, reflected as the BOD concentration (Oxygen Biological damage) and COD (Chemical Oxygen Damage) can be explained by the quadratic FEM model and follow the EKC hypothesis even though the turning point is not identified.

Abstract

This study investigates the international price relationship and volatility transmissions betweenstock index and stock index futures of Malaysia, Hong Kong and Japan. Vector Autoregression(VAR) GJR-GARCH model was applied to the nine years daily price. Japanesemarkets are the main information producer to the market price changes. International marketinterdependence only affected the domestic volatility transmission of spot and futuresmarket in Hong Kong. Asymmetric effects exist in all markets and the volatility persistence ineach market is high. Finally, the overall conditional correlation estimates for spot and futuresmarkets are higher in the unrestricted model form compared to the restricted modelform. Keywords: spot-futures, lead-lags, volatility, VAR GJR-GARCH, Asian financial markets
