Abstract

Lack of empirical understanding about the concept of ethical climate in faith-based non-profit organizations constraints the development of a better understanding of the governance system in Islamic philanthropic organizations. To address this issue, the present study aims at examining the ethical climate in Indonesian Zakat Management Organizations (henceforth LAZs) and identifying ways to overcome ethical challenges related to the process of managing zakat and other religious funds in these institutions. In particular, a quantitative survey research method was used where data from 117 respondents employed in administrative positions in national-, provincial-, and regency-level LAZs in Surakarta municipality were collected through a non-probability criterion-based sampling technique. For data collection, the modified Ethical Climate Questionnaire was utilized. In terms of data analysis, the authors employed IBM SPSS Amos software to perform the confirmatory factor analysis. The results of data analysis presented five types of ethical climate, including caring, law and code, rules, instrumental, and independence, that show the coexistence of collective orientation and individual interests among managers of LAZs. Thus, it can be stated that orientations towards both welfare and regulation as well as self-interest coexist within LAZs. The validated model developed by this study serves as a basis for further analyses concerning the effect of ethical climate on managerial decisions and organizational behaviour.

Abstract

mustahiq empowerment as well as investigates the moderating effect of entrepreneurial motivation on mustahiq of the National Amil Zakat Agency (BAZNAS) in Kendari. An explanatory sequential mixed-method approach was used in the study. For the quantitative part, a survey was conducted among 110 mustahiq who were engaged in productive zakat programs for the year 2024–2025. Data analysis was performed by using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) technique and SmartPLS. It is revealed that productive zakat and information technology have significant positive impacts on mustahiq empowerment, direct and indirect through entrepreneurial motivation. Besides, entrepreneurial motivation increases the positive influence of productive zakat and information technology on empowerment. In order to add more qualitative depth to the findings of the quantitative study, ten mustahiq were selected on purposeful sampling basis and interviewed. The interview results indicate that productive zakat helps in gaining business confidence and sustainability while information technology broadens market reach and improves efficiency in operations. Entrepreneurial motivation proves to be a vital driver that transforms financial and technological help into empowerment through making people resilient, confident, and entrepreneurial.

Abstract

The present study investigates direct and indirect impacts of six financing instruments including murabaha, mudaraba, musyarakah, ijarah, istishna and qardh of Islamic finance on the profitability of Indonesia's Islamic banks, measured through Return On Assets (ROA), where fintech adoption becomes the mediator. This study adopted quantitative explanation method, where secondary monthly times series data collected from the statistics of Islamic Banking reported by the Financial Services Authority (OJK) for the years 2015 - 2024 were used. The structural relationship between the variables was tested with path analysis, supported by Sobel test and bootstrapping with 5,000 samples to test mediation effect. The results found that mudaraba financing instrument had the highest positive impact on fintech adoption, showing higher association with financial innovation in comparison to other Islamic financing instruments. Digital transformation expenditure, which represents fintech adoption, significantly negatively impacts ROA; therefore, technology investments put immediate pressure on the profitability of the bank. Moreover, none of the Islamic financing instruments had a direct effect on ROA, but mudaraba financing instrument yielded a significant indirect effect on ROA through fintech adoption. These findings suggest that Indonesian Islamic banks remain in the early stage of digital transformation, highlighting the need for more efficient digital integration and supportive regulatory frameworks to achieve sustainable long-term profitability.

Abstract

This study aims to present a blockchain model as an instrument for zakat management. The study uses a qualitative method with a grounded theory approach. The model development is based on in-depth interviews with stakeholders to ensure the feasibility of blockchain in zakat management. Data analysis utilizes tools such as ATLAS.ti. The results of this study identified five main dimensions in blockchain modeling for zakat: trust mechanisms, transparency, accountability, cost and efficiency, and distribution speed. Test results revealed dimensions in the form of trust mechanisms, transparency, cost and efficiency, record keeping, and distribution speed. This study suggests that the utilization of blockchain in zakat management can not only technically automate processes but also promote Islamic principles in its operation based on fairness and accountability in record-keeping. This study recommends future validation of the proposed model in promoting the regulation of blockchain adoption in Islamic social finance.
