Abstract

This research aimed to know how the role group discussion in improving students’ vocabulary mastery at SMA Persada Bandar Lampung. This research was qualitative method which used triangulation method – observation, questionnaire, and interview. The researcher also gave activity for students to strengthen the result of triangulation data. This subject of research was consisted of 24 students of X.2 at SMA Persada Bandar Lampung.The result showed that the highest percentage 62.5% strongly agree was about ‘active participant’ as indicator which made improvement for students’ vocabulary. Students felt active while they were having group discussion. On the other hand, the result also showed the students’ social skill development in during group discussion. Some students said they could share their opinion with their friends. It meant that the role of group discussion could give influence to students’ vocabulary in learning English at SMA Persada Bandar Lampung. In conclusion, the role of group discussion was very helpful in learning.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the difference between be going to and be about to using data from BYU-BNC corpus. In future tense, there are several kinds of modals. Among them are will, be going to and be about to. In general, most people use will and be gpoing to. However, they do not yet know that there is one kind of modal in the future tense that is be about to. In fact, the use of be going to and be about to is different. In this research, I use online dictionaries and corpus data. In this study, I used qualitative description and corpus data. An online dictionary is selected because the results in can be the recent results. Meanwhile, the selection of corpus as data collection because the corpus can provide an example of the data we seek in accordance with everyday life. From the first 100 lines in the corpus in each phrase will be selected with the same verb. Then, the data is translated to get the meaning of each sentence and determine the function of both phrases. The results of this study indicate that the use of be going to and be about to can be used to express about what will happen in the future. However, there are some functional differences between the two phrases. Be going to can be used to declare someone’s intention to do something. It can also be used to declare or expect what will happen in the future. Meanwhile, be about to is used to express about what is closed to happen. In the form of a negative sentence, not to be about to can be used to declare that we have no intention or unwillingness to do anything.

Abstract

This qualitative of this research aim at describing the use of digital storytelling narrative text to improve students speaking ability at grade ten in Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri Bandar Lampung academic year 2017/2018 by using some instruments such as observation, questionare and speaking test. Based on experience of almost all students at grade ten in Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri 2 Bandar Lampung has not used digital storytelling therefore the teacher as facilitator provides this one good media which is digital storytelling. Digital storytelling is effective to improve on speaking ability. It is proved that the students became more confident, they speak fluently, the students also produce more correct sentences, correct pronunciation, and more vocabularies. The result of this research show there is an increase of students respond, motivation, and interest in the learning process using digital storytelling. It is concluded that the used of digital storytelling narrative text can improve students’ speaking ability at grade ten of SMA N 2 Bandar Lampung. The implementation of using digital storytelling improves students speaking ability.

Abstract

This research aimed to know what external factors improved students’ vocabulary and how external factor could give influence students in improving their vocabulary at SMA Muhammadiyah Bandar Lampung. This research was qualitative method which used triangulation method – observation, questionnaire, and interview. The researcher also gave activity to make a free writing. Students could tell story about their life. The result of students’ writing was used to prove the result of observation, questionnaire, and interview. The result showed that social factor was chosen by most students. Social factor was also one of external factors that had validity and reliability. It meant that social factor could give influence to students’ vocabulary. On the other hand, the result of interview also showed the students’ answer. There were different opinions between students and other students. The differences showed good relation between their answers and their score in writing activity. Based on the result, the researcher could conclude that the role of friends and teacher as external factor could influence students’ vocabulary.

Abstract

This research aimed to know how role play in improving the students’ vocabulary mastery at SMA Persada Bandar Lampung. Role play is applied in order to persuade the students to create connection between vocabularies, understanding and the content that is studied by them. This research will use qualitative research. The researcher would understand that world from the perspective of the people in that place; add the perspective from the student opinion. The researcher would be done at grade eleven of Persada Senior High School Bandar Lampung. The data would be gathered by observing the students in the class, providing them questionnaire in the end of the researcher study. The result from combination between two instruments above was in the form of table and it was explained by some sentence that interpreted the table. The result indicated that the role play technique gave the improvement for the students especially in improving their vocabulary mastery. And their pronunciation better than before, therefore it is recommended that the students are required to improve their vocabulary as well as understanding through using role play technique. The result showed that role play technique was effective to improve the students’ vocabulary. Besides, the technique  could also enhance  their interest and confidence in their English study.

Abstract

English subject aims to enable students to have good communication skill in this globalization era. Indonesian people learn this international language since they are in elementary school to senior high school. Although they have studied for 12 years, they cannot master English. One of the factors makes them fail in achieving the competence in learning English is “motivation”. There are two types of motivation; those are instrumental and integrative motivation. Furthermore, there is the different motivation between male and female students in learning English. This research investigated the gender divergence on English learning motivation of the tenth grade students of Kartikatama Senior High School whether they are motivated instrumentally or integratively and which one is highly motivated between male and female students. The descriptive quantitative data were applied in this research. The questionnaires distributed to 70 students at grade 10. The questionnaire instrument was adopted from a modified version of Gardner’s AMTB (Attitude/ Motivation Test Battery) in 1985. It consisted 14 items which used 5 point Likert Scale ranging from ‘strongly agree’ to ‘strongly disagree’. The result of the questionnaire was calculated by using Microsoft Excel version 2007. The measurement result continued by categorizing the score of each items by using Arikunto’s formula “HIGH” and “LOW to know the motivation of the students in each items. The results of the research are; male students of the tenth grade students of Kartikatama Senior High School have higher motivation than female students and both male and female students were instrumentally motivated toward learning English.

Abstract

The objective of this research were to know how discussion meeting technique can give an effect to students’ motivation, and confidence in the class, and to see student improvement of speaking in experiencing discussion meeting technique. This technique used as an effort to help the students to improve their speaking ability. Discussion meeting technique made the students have motivation and more confidence to improve the students’ speaking ability. In this research, the researcher used the descriptive qualitative method. This kind of method was used to feel the experience the real world, and also to know people’s point of view of a certain phenomenon. It was also used to obtain the truthful, precise, and well-organized explanation about students’ speaking in experiencing discussion meeting of speaking class. The research was done at SMAN 1 Bangkunat Belimbing that consisted of twenty students. To gather the data, the researcher did the observation and distributed the questionnaire at the end of her observation. The data was analyzed by combining the result of observation and questionnaire in several paragraphs. The result of this research showed that when firstly the researcher implemented this technique, student felt confused of what they should do in the class, but finally they are able to follow the instruction from the researcher. So, the class in the end ran successfully. From the questionnaire result also showed mostly positive feedback in experiencing discussion meeting technique. So, the improvement of students’ speaking ability was better than before. The combination of those two instruments is that discussion meeting technique is able to facilitate them in speaking class. They mostly agreed this technique could make them have motivation and more confidence in this class and could help them in improving their skill; also it could awake them that they need to be more responsible of their own learning in the class.
