Abstract

The half drying machine is a machine utilised to reduce the additional water content in the raw material. The design of the mechanical system is required that the machine is able to work appropriately. The mechanical system is a combination of machine elements which work as the source of power and rotation in the mechanical work which is the forwarded to the additional water content reducing mechanism. The design process is carried out through semantic, graphical and analytical methods which result in appropriate machine elements selection, i.e. electric motor, driver pulley, belt, driven pulley, pin, driven shaft, single line radial ball bearing and the house, single line axial bearing and the house, and the bolt and nut. All of the elements are in a unity with their own support frame which is able to be separated if required. The additional water content reducing process of raw material occurs due to the effect of rotation of the machine to the material.

Abstract

Fisheries as one of the pillars of the local economy in Aceh Province that had been optimally utilized. Catches especially during the harvest tends to be sold by the fishermen to other areas due to lack of knowledge of post-harvest handling. One of the post-harvest processing is the preservation of a cooling system is usually done with the use of cold storage box (cold box) at the Fish Landing Places (TPI). This study aims to get the length of storage time of fish that can maintain a temperature of 0°C to 5°C, by using the 3 kinds of cold storage box is made of wood material, fiber and styrofoam. From the results of testing two methods: the method of fish in the middle of the ice around it and the traditional methods used by the community found that containers with wood coated styrofoam insulation to maintain temperature of 2°C, while the  isolation box storage timber, fiber and styrofoam fish temperature exceeds 2.5°C. Wooden storage box covered with styrofoam has the most room temperature lower than the usualbox used by the community. This box is the ideal storage box, the construction is very simple.  The box is fully insulated by wood and styrofoam.

Abstract

A method developed to predict the failure that occurs at gas transmission pipe caused by loading with peak angle crack opening is described in this paper. There are two aspects become the main consideration; the maximum crack peak angle opening for the given load and space, and the determination of the critical stress intensity factor to search at what degree of loading the crack on the gas transmission pipe experiencing creep or failure. This research uses arc-shaped tension specimen and the analysis is carried out by finite element method using ansys ™ rel 5.4. In order to get the stress intensity factor, the loading is varied from 1 KN to 160 KN. Based on finite element method, the maximum stress intensity factor occurs at the range of loading of 16-160 KN, which is 5.67 x 1016 MPa.m1/2, and the minimum factor occurs at the range of loading of 0.5-1 KN, which is 3.76 MPa.m1/2. The stress intensity factor result is also validated with the analytical result. The maximum crack peak angle opening occurs at the range of loading of 16-160 KN which is 250, the stage that is able to cause pipe failure.

Abstract

Foundry industry is very important in the development of both machinery and household products. Furnace is important utility in producing a product. Available furnaces in the market are very costly and difficult to obtain due to be imported from abroad. Responding these issues, in this study is designed and developed a furnace that is simple, easy to manufacture, portable and most importantly the price is low so that it is affordable for industrial-scale domestic foundry industry. The furnace is heated with LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) as the gas is economical and obtainable. Refractory stones are used as a heat insulator to increase the temperature in the combustion chamber to reach 1,000 oC. The heat can be set via the setting of gas that goes into the combustion chamber so that it can be adapted for different types of material with a melting temperature below 1,000 oC. The type of metal melted in this research is aluminum. The test results showed that the furnace is able to melt 0.39 kg of aluminum in 30.15 minutes.

Abstract

Vibration analysis is very essential to be considered in designing a rotor system. The failure in rotor system parts can be avoided by understanding the dynamic characteristic. The objective of this research is to investigate the dynamic characteristic of rotor systems by using finite element method. Finite element method is used to reveal the system characteristic which is derived from the kinetic and potential energy equations. Some models of rotor systems are analysed to understand the dynamic characteristic. The natural frequencies are obtained from the eigen values. The simulation is carried out with the distance of disk from the support as the variable. The result shows that the distance between the disk and the bearing affects the natural frequency of the system.

Abstract

This paper discusses the phenomenon of brake squeal of a disc brake system used at motorcycle with a capacity of 125 cc. The occurrence of disc brake squeal is associated with the dynamic instability of the system with the influence coefficient of friction. The dynamic instability of the system is predicted using finite element complex eigenvalue analysis. The analysis predicted three unstable modes in the frequency range below 5 kHz. The unstable modes occurred at the frequency of 1250 Hz, 1920 Hz, and 2306 Hz. The occurrence of unstable mode is indicated by the presence of positive real part of the corresponding complex eigenvalue. Unstable mode is shown by the occurrence of coupled vibration between eigenvectors of disc and brake pads vibrating at similar frequency which consists of diametral mode of disc and bending modes of pads. The analysis also showed that the unstable condition could occur at a value of coefficient of friction as low as 0.2.

Abstract

Combustion of biobriquette produced from coal and palm shell generate considerable energy. However beside generating biobriquette energy it also produces emissions gas. Emissions gas resulting from combustion include SOx, NOx, CO and CO2. Calcium is an adsorbent often used to adsorb released SO2 gas in the combustion process. The purpose of this study is to seethe effect of combustion temperature and type of adsorbent used in biobriquette to evaluate the efficiency of absorption of SO2 and the kinetics of the reaction of SO2 gasabsorption as a function of combustion biobriquette ratio Ca/S (mol / mol) on coal and palm shell ratio of 90:10 (w/w). In this study, the ratio of Ca/Swas Specified at1:1, 1.25:1, 1.5:1, 1.75: 1 and 2:1. Combustion temperatures used were 300, 350, 400, 450 and 500°C. The result of this study showed the decrease levels of SO2 for scallop shell and green mussels  was highest at the ratio Ca/S2: 1. The highest absorption of efficiency adsorbent for scallop shells are produced at the ratio of Ca/2:1 at temperatures 400°C, equals to 90.59%. Meanwhile for the green mussels, the highest efficiency was resulted ratio of Ca/S 1.5:1 at temperatures 400°C which was equals to 84.74%. Reaction rate constants of absorption in the biggest adsorbent of scallop shells produced at ratio Ca/S 1:1 equals to  0.265, while the biggest reaction rate constants of adsorbent green mussels produced at being Ca/S 1.5:1equals to  0,198.

Abstract

This research aims to produce an effective heat sink with thermoelectric which is a semi conductor devices having several pairs of type P (positive) and N (negative) S content. Type P has a lower energy level while type N had a higher energy level. This tool, equipped with a heat sink as the heater, is mounted on a chamber to create a heat exchanger for a portable cooler box. Three types of thermoelectric modules were used with different fin types to find out the their effects on the temperature, T, and the rate of heat transfer, Q, inside the cooler box. The results shows that with the blood volume of 250 cc, the blood temperature can be decreased from 29 oC to 5.8 oC within 145 minutes. The ideal temperature for the blood storage ranges from 1 oC to 6 oC. Among the three types of fins that were tested, the most effective heat transfer was given by fin type no. 3, the cylindrical-shaped fins. The heat transfer obtained is 12.83 W/m2 oC. The lowest heat transfer was given by fin type no. 2, which is a slot type, with heat transfer rate of 3.85 W/m2 oC.

Abstract

Aceh is one of the biggest milkfish (chanos-chanos Forsskal)-producing provinces in Indonesia and the production is increasing year by year. However, beyond that prospect, there are disadvantages of the milkfish which are able to be putrid easily and are not able to be kept for a long time. In addition, at the time of great harvest and the fish production is plenitude and less of the fish is in use that the price of the fish decreases sharply. The population of Aceh generally like to consume fresh and dried milkfish especially the people in the rural and highland. Based on the result of the previous research, the drying method which is done by putting the fish under direct sunlight is inefective as the sunlight is not perpetually present as expected. Even the quality of the product is low as the fish is contaminated by flies. In addition it requires large drying areas to produce large quantity fish. In this research, it is conducted eksperimental analysis and drying characteristic of the milkfish in the drying process by using drying equipment with gas fuel. The drying equipment used is the shelf type which is located in Thermal Engineering Laboratory, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Faculty, Syiah Kuala University. The equipment consists of burning room, drying room and chimney. The weight of  milkfish model is 200 grams, 250 grams, and 300 grams. Based on the test result on the milkfish weighted 200 grams after the drying process, it can be seen that the content of protein 18,97 %,fat 3,75%, water 19,20% with the total drying process of six hour.

Abstract

Nugget is one of food ready to served which raw material was a chicken meat. The aimed this research is to get a limited or how long time to save nugget that defended the temperature 0oC, with need time 2 – 4 days only,which made from a wood and styrofoam. From the result of research that the wood box able to defended the temperature in 0oC at the fiftieht hours,styrofoam box at sixty fourth hours and mixture box in seventy one hours. The temperature on nugget (T1) wood box from the first hour until thirty ninth hours experienced rise of temperature lower than mixture box and styrofoam. The temperature on the box (T2)   wood box from the first hours  until fourty sixth huors experienced rise of the temperature lower than mixture box and styrofoam box.
