Abstract

This paper presents a study of deformation and failure performances of a plastic sheet made of polymer alloys subjected to drop weight impact of a cylindrical mass with hemispherical tip at a certain velocity by using dynamic explicit finite element code of MSC. Dytran. An available material model in the finite element system, called piecewise linear plasticity, was applied in the simulation for describing the large strain, non-linear behavior of the polymeric materials. Maximum plastic strain failure criterion was used to simulate the impact failure. In the simulation, the mass served as a rigid surface strikes perpendicularly the potential impact region of an arbitrary designed- plastic sheet that was considered in the form of a fully-clamped circular thin plate. Contact between the mass and plate was applied and friction coefficient m between the mass and plate was assumed to be a constant value of 0.3. In order to study effect of the assumed friction coefficient value, additional simulations of the impact test have been performed using m = 0. Some limitations in the use of the material model were illustrated through the analysis of results from two types of tough polycarbonate (PC) alloys: PC/ABS and PC/PBT blends. Impact force-displacement relationships of each alloy were then compared to the test result.

Abstract

Experimental investigations to study significant effects of employing a post weld heat treatment (PWHT) technique on mechanical properties of the welded carbon steel have been performed. This paper presents a study on hardness and tensile strength characteristics of a carbon steel A106 grade B welded using shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) method with employing normalizing procedures. With the PWHT technique, heating temperature of the steel, that was set up to 850°C, was then maintained for these following set of holding times: 10, 20 and 30 minutes before cooling. Heating and cooling rates of the carbon steel were also slowly maintained. Investigation results under tension showed that the tensile strength of the carbon steel decreased with increase of the holding time. The best tensile strength was achieved by the carbon steel treated with a holding time for 20 min. Toughness of the carbon steel under tension is also discussed in order to correlate the influence of employing the PWHT technique on their fracture modes. Investigation with Vickers hardness test showed that the Vickers hardness on weld metal, weld line, heat-affected zone (HAZ) and base metal of the welded carbon steel, respectively, decreased and tended to be equivalent with the increase of the holding time.

Abstract

The sun is the primary source of energy on the earth, but its light sometimes cause thermal discomfort for humans. The thermal engineering started one in the automotive sector in particular car is to install the air conditioner to lower the temperature of the cabin and use the tranfer window film to block sun light intensity. Testing the proper use of window film to determine the effect of inhibition of the ability to transfer the glass clarity of light intensity on the glass needs to be done to determine what percentage inhibition that has the intensity and the lower the cabin temperature, so the thermal comfort is achieved faster. From the results of the testing were conditioned using Solar ray Collector © PHYWE Systeme GmbH CO.KG. Inhibition obtained with 40% glass has an intensity of 39% and a temperature of 63.20 C, the glass has an intensity of 60% inhibition of 21% and a temperature of 61.90 C, the glass has an intensity of 80% inhibition of 8% and a temperature of 63.80 C. So the use of glass with 60% inhibition is best to accelerate the thermal comfort is achieved.

Abstract

This paper discusses the phenomenon of brake squeal of a disc brake system used at motorcycle with a capacity of 125 cc. The occurrence of disc brake squeal is associated with the dynamic instability of the system with the influence coefficient of friction. The dynamic instability of the system is predicted using finite element complex eigenvalue analysis. The analysis predicted three unstable modes in the frequency range below 5 kHz. The unstable modes occurred at the frequency of 1250 Hz, 1920 Hz, and 2306 Hz. The occurrence of unstable mode is indicated by the presence of positive real part of the corresponding complex eigenvalue. Unstable mode is shown by the occurrence of coupled vibration between eigenvectors of disc and brake pads vibrating at similar frequency which consists of diametral mode of disc and bending modes of pads. The analysis also showed that the unstable condition could occur at a value of coefficient of friction as low as 0.2.

Abstract

Private sectors have invested in the technology to grow some Gelidialian red algae families and also tried to convert the algae to pulp and paper over the last few years in order to replace raw materials from wood. Several modern systems with their all complexities which are similar to the wood pulp-based papermaking technology have been offered to overcome any recent issues settle in the converting process. Chemical bleaching agents have even been still a standard treatment that must be established for properly converting the algae pulp to a sheet of paper. In this present work, the two genus of red algae, called Gracilaria and Eucheuma, were simply processed to make pulps without use of any bleaching chemical agents. The potential use of pulps made of the red algae as raw materials for papermaking was mechanically studied by testing the sheets made of the red algae through a tensile test at a room temperature under 20 mm/min according to ASTM D 828-97 (2002). Tensile properties of the proposed algae-based paper sheets obtained under the constant rate are discussed. Tensile properties of the selected wood-based paper sheets obtained under the same condition are also presented in this paper. The results showed that pulps made of the red algae would be the alternative to those of the wood and other natural fibers as raw materials for papermaking. Abstract

Cassava, corn, sago and the other food crops have been commonly used as raw materials to produce green plastics. However, plastics produced from such crops cannot be tailored to fit a particular requirement due to their poor water resistance and mechanical properties. Nowadays, researchers are hence looking to get alternative raw materials from the other sustainable resources to produce plastics. Their recent published studies have reported that marine red algae, that has been already widely used as a raw material for producing biofuels, is one of the potential algae crops that can be turned into plastics. In this work, Eucheuma Cottonii, that is one of the red alga crops, was used as raw material to produce plastics by using a filtration technique. Selected latex of Artocarpus altilis and Calostropis gigantea was separately then blended with bioplastics derived from the red algae, to replace use of glycerol as plasticizer. Role of the glycerol and the selected latex on physical and mechanical properties of the red algae bioplastics obtained under a tensile test performed at room temperature are discussed. Tensile strength of some starch-based plastics collected from some recent references is also presented in this paperDoi: 10.12777/ijse.5.2.81-88 [How to cite this article: Machmud, M.N., Fahmi, R.,  Abdullah, R., and Kokarkin, C.  (2013).
