Abstract

The aim of this study was to identify the effect of Arbuscular Mycorhiza Fungi (AMF) on the early growth of teak (Tectona grandis Linn. F) plantation. Teak seedlings were inoculated with Glomus aggregatum or Mycofer (mixing of four Arbuscular Mycorrhiza Fungi (AMF) : G. margarita, G. manihotis, G. etunicatum and Acalospora spinosa) at the time of transplantation. At  three months old the seedlings were planted in Cikampek experimental forest. Results showed that application of G. aggregatum or mycofer to teak could accelerate height and diameter growth by up to 61%and4 7%, respectively, after three months in the field.

Abstract

The disadvantage of  fast-growing species is  that they have inferior physical and mechanical properties. Polystyrene impregnation can be applied to improve physical and mechanical properties. Wood samples, which were dried  until 10% moisture content were put into impregnating tank and vacuum pressured  at 20-mm Hg  for  two hours. During  the gradual release of  vacuum, styrene monomers,  vinyl acetate  monomers  and  terburyl-peroxide catalyst was streamed  into  the tank. Afterwards, the pressure inside the tank was allowed to decrease to 500 mm Hg and kept for 60 minutes. Wood samples which had been impregnated were subsequently immersed in water, then wrapped in aluminum foils and put in the oven for 24 hours at 60°C. The samples were then tested for the polymer loading and their physical and mechanical properties. The results showed that the polymer loadings in wood plastics with the species  of origin (i.e. consecutively sengon, pine and rubber wood) were 118%, 72% and 44%, respectively. Impregnation with polystyrene  (copolymer of styrene and vinyl acetate monomers) could improve the physical and mechanical properties of wood plastics, i.e.  specific gravity, moisture content, water absorption,  shrinkage/ swelling, compression parallelto the wood grain, MOR and MOE. Greater  use of vinyl acetate decreased physical and mechanical properties.

Abstract

Ramin  (Gonystylus bancanus Kurtz.)  is one  of  the  tree  species in  peat-swamp  forest  that  is endangered due to excessive exploitation. The objective of this research was to assess the potency of rarnin and other commercial tree species in primary and logged over peat-swamp forests at Bagan, Riau. The tree stands were inventoried in primary forest of the 2004 and 2006 Annual Work Plan (RKTs) and in  the  1997  and  2001  RKTs  managed  with  Indonesian  Selective Cutting  and  Planting  (TPTI) silvicultural system.  The  result  showed  that  rarnin in  Bagan peat-swamp  forest  was not  evenly distributed. The total number of ramin  in tree stage in primary forests was fewer than that in  logged over forests.  The total number of ramin species at tree stage in primary forest was between 4.5  and 5 trees ha· with the important value index (IVI) of 10.3  to 12.0%,  whereas the one at logged over forest were between 2.5 and 15  trees ha· with theM    indices of 7.9 to 20.4%.  Commercial species of swamp meranti (Shorea uliginosaand S. teysmaniana) and balam/ suntai or (Palaqqiumspp.) were dominant at tree stage both in the primary and the logged over forests. Enrichment in logged over forests is not needed since the total number of seedlings and saplings  is enough. The total number of potential core trees in logged over forests was enough for the next cutting cycle. The effort that must be done in logged over forests is to protect them from illegal logging.

Abstract

The fiber-plastic composites were made from the compounding of plastic (polypropylene) and sisal  (Agave sisalana)fiber with or without  addition of coupling agent (Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene).  The tensile  strength (Modulus of Elasticity-MOE, Modulus of Rupture-MOR) of the composites were evaluated in the three different conditions, i.e. air dry condition (control), 24 - hour immersion in cold water and 2-hour immersion  in boilingwater.  The results showed that the addition of coupling agent enhanced the properties of the composites.   These properties did not significantly change although  the composites  were immersed in cold water as long as 24 hours.    However, immersion in boiling water for 2 hours, tended to decrease MOR and MOE of the composites.

Abstract

An investigation of the recruit, survivorship and growth of naturally regenerating tree species on canal bank was conducted to  select tree species which are suitable for preceding planting in drained and burnt peat swamp lands in  Central Kalimantan, Indonesia.  Top of  the canal bank were open, with greater soil moisture  deficit and higher soil temperatures than on the next intact forest floor. The abundant  trees were asam-asam (Ploiarium alternifolium),garunggang (Cratoxylon arborescens) and tumih (Combretocarpus rotundatus). New regeneration of these trees on the canal bank was confirmed during this investigation and mortality was very low. These results indicated that P. alternifolium,C. arborescens and C. rotundatuswere tolerant of intensive radiation, soil drought and high soil temperatures during germination. The annual height increments  were 189-232  cm y-1 (P. alternifolium),118-289  cm y-1  (C. arborescens)and 27-255 cm y-1   (C. rotundatus); thus, these three species could be classified as fast-growing with tolerance to open and dry conditions.  Such characteristics were important to avoid competition with herbs, ferns,and/ or climbers. The results·suggest that P.alternifolium,C. arborescens and C. rotundatusare suitable for preceding planting for the rehabilitation of the disturbed peat swamp forests of Central Kalimantan.

Abstract

Important    carbon  storage  in a forest vegetation   includes  below  ground  carbon  storage  and above ground   carbon   storage.    Carbon   storage  under  the ground   is  higher  than  that  above  ground,   so that soils are critical both  as a source  and sink of  carbon.   The  main  objective  of  this research  is to examine the annual  changes  of  soil carbon   storage   from  year 2001   to year 2003 in the permanent   plots  of  an experimental   plantation    (new  plantation   established   in the  year 2001)  and in the  permanent    plots  of control   plot/baseline  (young  secondary  forest),  in Cianten  Experimental    Site, Bogor,  West Java.    Soil carbon content   at 0-30 cm depth   for 0 year old, 1  year old and 2 year old plantations   are 4.14- 9.35%, 4.08  8.83%  and 3.04-   7.61  %, respectively.    Soil carbon  content  at control  plot  for 2001,  2002 and 2003 are 1.86-5.75%,  2.32 - 5.79% and 2.05 - 4.84%,  respectively.    Bulk density   at 0-30 cm soil depth  for 0 year old,  1  year old, and 2 yea.r  old plantations   are 0.38 - 0.5  mg/ m,  0.38 - 0.52%  mg/ m3 and 0.32  - 0.5 mg/ m, respectively.    Bulk density  at control  plot  for 2001,  2002 and 2003 are 0.47 - 0.63  mg/m3,  0.43 -0.6 mg/m3  and 0.4 1- 0.55  mg/m3,  respectively.     The  cumulative   soil carbon   stock  of  Pinus  merkusii plantation   is somewhat   higher  than  that of  baseline in Cianten  Experimental   Site, Bogor, West Java.
