Abstract

Potensi kayu berdiameter kecil (<10cm) dari hutan tanaman cukup besar namun belum dimanfaatkan secara optimal. Sesungguhnya kayu tersebut dapat digunakan sebagai bahan baku pembuatan papan isolasi. Pada penelitian ini menggunakan kayu mangium (Acacia mangium) berdiameter kecil untuk dijadikan pulp, kemudian digunakan dalam pembuatan papan isolasi. Selanjutnya guna meningkatkan fungsi dari papan tersebut, tidak hanya sebagai insulation juga sebagai penyerap gas/uap, maka sebelum dibentuk lembaran papan, pulp mangium dicampur terlebih dahulu dengan arang serat (hasil pengarangan serat kayu mangium dan karet) pada beberapa komposisi yaitu 100:0, 90:10, 80:20 and 70:30 (w/w). Pulp mangium dibuat dengan proses soda panas terbuka. Kualitas papan isolasi yang dibuat telah memenuhi standar Jepang kecuali untuk pengembangan tebalnya. Berdasarkan nilai scoring, kerapatan, dan sifat fisik-mekanik papan isolasi serta dibandingkan dengan standar Jepang maka papan isolasi yang optimal diperoleh pada kontrol dan komposisi pulp dan arang 90:10. Sifat-sifat tersebut mengindikasikan bahwa kayu mangium berdiamater kecil dapat dibuat papan isolasi dengan kualitas yang baik.

Abstract

This experiment evaluate the use of mangrove (Rhizophora mucronata) bark powder mixed with paraformaldehyde as an adhesive in particleboard manufacturing.  The treatments consisted of powder size (100 and 140 mesh) and pressing temperature (110,125,  and 140° C).  The qualities observed were physical and mechanical properties of the boards.The effect of powder size on the properties of particleboard was negative. The effect of temperature on the properties of particleboard was on the other hand significant.  There is a linear correlation between temperature and each property of particleboard. Except Thickness Swelling, all properties conform with Particleboard Standard issued by FAO (1966), especially at temperature 125° C or above.

Abstract

Manufacturing trials of medium density fiberboard from logging wood wate have been conducted on a laboratory scale at the Forest Products Research and Dewlopment Centre, Bogor. Wood sample used in this study were obtained from South Sumatera logs of having a fairly wide range of specific gravity from 0.37 - 0.61. Pulp preparation were carried out by using the conventional cold caustic soda process at concentration of 36 gram per liter; wood to liquor ratio of 1 to 7 and soaking time of 24 hours. In this experiment the role of the pH of the slurry was investigated at seven levels being from pH 3 to pH 8 with one pH interval. Medium density fiberboard are formed by applying cold pressure of 10 kg/cm2 for 5 minute, and hot pressure of 25 kg/cm2 for 3 minute at 180°C. The pulp yield and alkali consumption were tested, according to the Libby experiment pulping by cold caustic soda process. Average pulp yielda were between 89,6 - 91,2 per cent with relatively high lignin content ranges from 17,2 - 24,8 per cent. The alkali comsumptions in the spent liquor throughout the experiment were between 10, 7 and 13, 7 per cent. This experiment reveals that except for density, other properties were significantly in fluenced by the level of pH. Medium density fiberboard produced from slurry of having the pH of 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 appear to have the density, water absorption, tensile strength modulus of rapture and modulus of elostisity comparable to that of the FAO Standard. In general, the pH 5 produce medium density fiberboard of better physical properties.

Abstract

The aim of this investigation is to create a prediction model on the potentiality of supplying merchant wood products. The investigation was carried out in the province of Riau Four Sawmills and two plywood industries were selected for this study.The annual data concerning production factors (input factors) such as material input (x1), the price of raw material (x2), The cost of additive matters/auxiliaries (x3), the designed production capacities (x4), and the price per unit product (x5) were collected. In addition, their annual production (Y) was also recorded.The prediction model is intended to interpret the relationship between production factors and their actual production per annum by applying multiple regression analysis. The prediction models for Sawmill products and plywood products are presented respectively as follow :Y = 7.2140 + 0.5717 x1 – 0.1323 x2 – 0.1787 x3 + 0.0078 x4 + 0.2188 x5, andY = 10.1774 + 2.1724 x1 – 0.6431 x2 + 0.0071 x3 + 0.6182 x4 + 0.7128 x5.Both models show a considerable high of confidence (P = 0.95).

Abstract

The study was carried out in three locations  in Jambi, Central Kalimantan and East Kalimantan. The number of forest companies observed  in each location  varies  from 2 to 4 which  were randomly  selected.The study  concludes that  :The  logging waste  ranges from 16,3 %  to 24,6 % of the clear bole volume. The average logging waste is 22,2  % consists of 12,2 %  trimming waste and stumps, and 9 % defects.The  exploitation  factor  ranges from 75,4 % to 83,7 % and  the average is 0,80.  This value  was previously  used for the observed  locations.Diameter class has a highly significant effect (P<0,01) on exploitation  factor.  The  exploitation  factor proportionally increases  with  the log diameters.

Abstract

Di Indonesia, kegiatan pembalakan di hutan alam dilakukan dengan metode pemotongan kayu sepanjang batang bebas cabang dan menyaradnya ke tempat pengumpulan kayu. Pada penelitian ini, dilakukan pengamatan unjuk kerja penyaradan pada metode tree length logging, dimana pemotongan batang dilakukan di atas cabang pertama sampai diameter minimal 20 cm dan panjang minimal 1,30 m, yang dimanifestasikan oleh produkstivitas dan biaya penyaradan. Penelitian dilakukan di 4 areal ijin usaha pemanfaatan hasil hutan kayu pada hutan alam (IUPHHK-HA). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa produktivitas penyaradan berkisar antara 10,909 - 48,174 m3/jam dengan rata-rata 22,217 m3/jam, tergantung jarak sarad. Sedangkan biaya penyaradan berkisar antara Rp 13.544,14 - Rp 59.810,12/m3 atau rata-rata Rp 28.628,10/m3dengan jarak sarad berkisar antara 100 -25 m.

Abstract

The Forest Product Research and  Development Centre, Bogor, has  constructed  the Lorena,   Singer and the Traditional  fuelwood stoves to measured the  efficiency of each type. The material used for the construction of the stoves are clay, sand, sawdust, red-bricks  and  water.The  efficiency of  each  type  is  measured  by  using  the  stoves  for  cooking  water  to  boiling point in an aluminium pan, where rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) wood is used as fuelwood.The  stoves  efficiency is expressed  as the  ratio  between  the effective  heat the boiled  water absorbs and the potensial heat  produced by  firewoods.The results of the  observations and  calculations  of  the  efficiency of   the  respective types   of   firewood   stoves indicated  that  the  Lorena  stove  has the  highest  efficiency of  24.75%,  followed by the Singer stove with  24.50%, and the traditional  one,  the least  efficient   is 18.64%. Compared  with  the tested  traditional stove, the  Lorena  and  the  Singer stoves  appear  to have high efficiency which consumed 30% less of  fuelwood.

Abstract

Papan serat hardboard (HB) dari campuran Rumput Gelagah (RG), Tandan Kosong Kelapa Sawit (TKKS) dan bambu andong berpotensi untuk dikembangkan. Namun, percobaan pendahuluan menunjukkan HB tersebut tidak memenuhi persyaratan produk HB dari Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) dan International Standard Organization (ISO). Tulisan ini mempelajari modifikasi pembuatan HB agar memenuhi standar produk tersebut. Modifikasi yang dilakukan meliputi penambahan konsentrasi alkali dalam pemasakan pulp dan merubah komposisi perekat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan kualitas HB modifikasi meningkat dan mampu memenuhi persyaratan standar JIS dan ISO. Campuran serat pulp RG dan bambu andong/betung dimasak dengan konsentrasi alkali 10,5% dan 12% untuk serat dari TKKS. Campuran perekat yang digunakan adalah tannin-resorsinol-formaldehida (TRF), alum (tawas) dan emulsi lilin. Campuran serat yang paling banyak memenuhi standar adalah RG pulp (50%) + TKKS pulp (50%), diikuti RG pulp (100%), TKKS pulp (50%) + pulp bambu andong (50%), RG pulp (50%) + pulp bambu betung (50%). Serat yang masih kurang prospektif (bambu betung) diharapkan dapat diperbaiki melalui penggunaan perekat TRF dalam jumlah lebih banyak, arang aktif berukuran nano dan cross-linking agent.

Abstract

 The relationship  between   tree crown  diameter  and/or  tree height which  measured from aerial photos in tropical rain forest is the  object  of this  study. Result of model  analysis  by crown  diameter  and  tree height  variable are as follows   :In  the  harvested primary  forest  condition, the  most  appropriate  model  for all tree samples  is :   Y  =   30,615 -1,580 D + 1,247 T + 0,037 D2 -0,021 DT               with  coefficient   correlation  r =  0,9637.The  most  appropriate  model  by  crown  diameter  variable in the  harvested   primary  forest  condition   for all trees samples  is  :           Y = 1,732  + 0,214 D  with  r =  0,2971.          For Meranti  species,  the  most  appropriate  model  is :          Y = 6,684 - 0,555 D + 0,020 D2 with  r = 0,664  and for Ulin species is:          Y = -  37,736 + 2,738 D -  0,036 D2  with  r = 0, 776.      3. The  model  and  its analysis are valid for  East Kalimantan  only.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengamati suuktur/karakteristik anatomi, clansifat fisis mekanis kayu kurang dikenal jenis kumea batu (ManilkaramerrillianaH.J.L.). Sampel kayu dari jenis ini diambil dari hutan alam produksi di Kecamatan Lampia Kabupaten Luwu Timur, Propinsi Sulawesi Selatan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kumea batu memiliki kayu gubal berwarna coklat muda kemerahan dan teras berwarna coklat kemerahan. Lingkar tumbuh samar-samar dan terkadang jelas serta menampakkan corak yang indah berupa garis-garis sejajar pada potongan radial, serat lurus, tekstur halus dan permukaan kayu mengkilap. Panjang serat 677,55 µm, diameter serat 22,15 µm, diameter lumen 1,94 µm, tebal dinding 10,10 µm dan semua nilai turunan serat tergolong dalam kelas IV untuk bahan baku pulp/kertas. Kayu kumea batu sangat berat (berat jenis 1.07) dengan penyusutan sangat tinggi, keteguhan lentur pada batas patah 1,557.68 kg/cm2, keteguhan tekan sejajar serat 491.35 kg/ cm2 dan tergolong kayu kelas kuat II.
