Abstract

Islamic education in Indonesia has a long history and started around the 13th century, but it faces many challenges. The first of challenge is the existence of logocentrism and the second of the challenge is the school of centrism (mazdhab-centrism). Logocentrism and school of centrism (mazdhab-centrism) in Islamic education has caused the rise of ghulat community and radicalism in Indonesia. For this reason, Islamic education as an implementation of maqāṣid sharī‘ah should be reconstructed. Islamic education systems have to change its strategy and operational method. It has to be open and inclusive to foreign resources of school environment as stated by Auda in maqāṣid sharī‘ah. By implementing the thought of Auda’s maqāṣid sharī‘ah in the Islamic education in Indonesia, it is expected that the competent, broad-minded, humanistic, tolerant, and democratic Muslim communities can be realized. Besides that, the reconstruction of Islamic education can give information to the society that Islam is not as rigid as radicalism claims, but Islam provides a lot of alternatives in solving the present problems.

This phenomenon makes affiliation efforts with radical groups, including building networks in the higher education. Radical Ideas easily penetrate campuses and universities. The vulnerability is not only seen from a psycho-social approach alone, but also as in instrument or media that outspread hatred and violence that designed to fit campus lifestyle. Some of the ways are such as books, magazines, bulletins, internet and social media networks. Universities can formulate appropriate and effective communication strategies as an effort in de-radicalisation, indoctrination, and de-ideologisation. Altering Islamic stigma as a terrorist religion and eliminating the image of Indonesia as implementing the teachings of Islam substantively according to Indonesian Islamic localities can do a terrorist country. Islam penetrated and developed in Indonesia not based on violence or religious radicalism, but by reflecting the spirit of Islam as the religion of blessing to the world (rahmatan lil alamin).

Abstract

The development of several Institute of Islamic Studies into Islamic Universities brings consequences to living religious disciplines vis-à-vis secular disciplines. A multi-disciplinary approach is adopted by positioning al-Quran and Hadits as the foundation of scientific development. This paper attempts to bring western perspective in examining epistemological issues in Indonesian Islamic higher education’s multi-disciplinary approach, its challenges, and critiques. Religious discipline’s domain cannot fully be examined from secular discipline’s framework, as it will result in contra-productive confrontation between the two authorities. Therefore, the challenge for this approach is defining which are autonomous areas in the two domains and which is the intersection. Pragmatically, this approach must result in new genres, which are more productive for the development of mankind civilization.
