Abstract

ABSTRACT The objective of this study is to know the use of language learning strategy training affect in the achievement of students’ descriptive reading and descriptive writing. The population of this study was all the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Tanjung Batu in the academic year of 2012/2013 consisting of 186 students. From population, 60 students were taken as a sample using simple random sampling. In carrying out the research, the writer used pre-test-post-test control group design. In analyzing the data, the writer used the t-test (paired sample and independent sample t-test) and were calculated by SPSS Version 17. Based on the result of the data analysis by using independent sample t-test, it was found that (1) p-output was 0.000 and is lower than the mean significant difference at the 0.05 level. It means that H1 is accepted (2) p-output was 0.000 and is lower than the mean significant difference at the 0.05 level. It means that H2 is accepted (3) p-output was 0.01 and is lower than mean significant difference at the 0.05 level. It means that H3 is accepted. It means that there was significant difference in students’ descriptive reading and descriptive writing achievement of the students who were taught through language learning strategy training compared to those who were not. Abstract

Abstract The formulation of the of this study was “Is it effective teaching reading comprehension by using summarizing strategy to the eleventh grade students of the State Senior High School 1 of Palembang?” Therefore, the purpose of this study was to find out the effectiveness of teaching reading comprehension by using summarizing strategy to the eleventh grade students of the State Senior High School 1 of Palembang. The population of this study was all the eleventh grade students of the State Senior High School 1 of Palembang  in academic year 2013/2014. The sample was taken class XI.1. that consists of 35 students. The methods of this study were experimental method by using the convenience non random sampling. In collecting the data, the written test was given consisted of 24 questions where 4 items were essay questions, 10 items multiple choice, 10 items short answer. The pretest was given in order to know the students’ achievement and the post-test was given after giving the treatment. To analyze the data, the matched t-test formula was applied. Based on the finding of the study, the writer found that the average score in the pre-test was 6.44 and the average score that the students got in post test 7, 52. The result of t-test calculation indicates that by using summarizing strategy was effective to implement in teaching reading comprehension by using summarizing strategy to the eleventh grade students of the State Senior High School 1 of Palembang  because the t-obtained (12.00) was higher that t-table. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It can be concluded that it was effective in teaching reading comprehension by using summarizing strategy to the eleventh grade students of the State Senior High School 1 of Palembang. Keywords: teaching, reading comprehension,summarizing strategy

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to determine the type of deviation of a deaf child in syntactic and phonological components. This research was conducted by qualitative descriptive approach with recording and observation technique. The object of the study was a child with hearing impairment named Andini a grade 2 student of junior high school YPAC (Yayasan Pendidikan Anak Cacat) Karya Ibu in the academic year of 2016-2017, who was 15 years old, 95 decibels (db). Data obtained through observation and recording are described verbally through written language in sentence form. There are many language deviations or words uttered by Andini, a 15-year-old deaf girl. There are four types of language deviations in the phonological component: (1) Distortion, (2) substitution (3) omittion, And the last is (4) addition. In the syntactic component, of the 5 sentences uttered Andini there is no deviation in the syntactic component. But every word that Andini uttered in the sentence contains a language error in the phonological component.

Abstract

AbstractThis study is concerned withthe influence of Role plays and Learning Motivation towards the first year Room Division students’ Speaking Ability at Tourism Polytechnic of Palembang. In this study, 32 students of first year room division department were chosen as samples by means of two stages random sampling. This study applied factorial design. The data were collected by using questionnairres and speaking test. The data were analyzed by using Paired Sample T-test, Independent Sample T-test, and Two-Ways Anova. The result showed that first, there was significant influence of Role Play towards the first year room division students’ speaking ability. Second, there was significant influence of conventional teaching technique towards the first year room division students’ speaking ability. Third, there was significant influence of role play and conventional teaching technique towards the first year room division students’ speaking ability between students who have high and low learning motivation at Palembang Tourism Polytechnic. Fourth, there was interaction effect of role play and learning motivation towards the first year room division students’ speaking ability. It can be concluded that Role Play technique was quite effective to improve students’ speaking achievement.Keywords: Role Plays, Learning Motivation, Speaking Ability

Abstract

AbstractThis research aimed at evaluating the significant influence of Jigsaw technique towards students’ Cause and Effect essay writing achievement, the significant influence of learning styles toward Students’ Cause and Effect essay writing achievement, and significant interaction between Jigsaw technique and learning styles toward students Cause and Effect essay writing achievement. In doing research, the writer used experimental method with factorial design. This research was conducted at STAIN Curup with the sample 72 students where 36 studentsparticipated in Experiment group and 36 students participated in Control group. In analyzing the data, independent t-test One Way ANOVA and two-way ANOVA were used. The findings of the study showed that there was significant influenceof Jigsaw technique towards students cause and effect essay writing achievement, there was no significance influence of learning styles towards students Cause and Effect essay writing achievement and there was no significant interaction between Jigsaw technique and Learning styles toward students cause and effect essay writing achievementKey words: Jigsaw, Learning Styles, Cause and Effect Essay Writing

Abstract

This study was aimed to investigate the evidence about intrapersonal intelligence, learning styles, and self-confidence to speaking ability. This is  quantitative study. The population of this study was all the second semester students of English Education Study Program of PGRI University of Palembang with the total of 60 students. For the purpose of this study, 60 students had been selected by using total sampling as the research sample. To collect the data, there were two kinds of instrument used. The first intrument was questionnaire used to collect the data of students’ intrapersonal intelligence, learning styles, and self-confidence. The second intrument was a speaking test to collect the data of students’ speaking ability. The data were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment and multiple regression formula of SPSS 21 program to find out the correlation among intrapersonal intelligence, learning styles, and self-confidence on speaking ability. And the result indicated, there was significant correlation between intrapersonal intelligence and speaking ability with the correlation coefficient (r) was .965, between self-confidence and speaking ability it was also shown that the level of correlation was high category (r) .989, but there was not any significant correlation between learning styles and speaking ability with the correlation coefficient (r) was -.112. There were significante correlation among intrapersonal intelligence, learning styles, and self-confidence on speaking ability with the level of correlation analysis was in positive category (r) .991. The result suggests that intrapersonal intelligence, learning styles, and self-confidence significantly correlate with speaking ability.Keywords: Intrapersonal Intelligence, Learning Styles, Self- Confidence, and Speaking Ability.

Abstract

AbstractThis study aimed to find out: (1) whether or not cubing technique was significantly effective in improving students’ writing achievement; (2) whether or not peer reviewing technique was significantly effective in improving students’ writing achievement, and (3) whether or not there were significant differences in writing achievements among the students of SMA Negeri 1 Banyuasin I who were taught through the techniques of cubing and peer reviewing. The method of the study was randomized two-group pretest-posttest design. Data were collected through pretest and posttest of writing descriptive text. The results of pretest and posttest were analyzed by using t-test. The population was all the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Banyuasin I in the academic year 2017/2018. The sampling technique used was simple random sampling. The samples were 90 eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Banyuasin I. The results showed that: (1) Cubing technique was significantly effective in improving students’ writing achievement; (2) Peer reviewing technique was significantly effective in improving students’ writing achievement; (3) There were significant differences in writing achievement among the students of SMA Negeri 1 Banyuasin I who were taught through the techniques of cubing and peer reviewing.Keywords: cubing, peer reviewing, writing descriptive text

Abstract

ABSTRACT  This research is a quantitative research which has the purpose to find out whether or not there was significant correlation among students’ reading interest, reading comprehension, and their intralingual translation achievement of the sixth semester students of English Education Department of STKIP Muhammadiyah Kotabumi, North Lampung in the academic year of 2013/2014. Furthermore, the population of the research is the sixth semester students of English Education Department of STKIP Muhammadiyah Kotabumi consisting of 120 students, from the population, 42 students were represented as the sample which was taken through simple random sampling technique. The instruments used were questionnaire for reading interest, multiple choice test for reading comprehension, and written test for intralingual translation. After having the result, then the data were analyzed by using multiple correlation  in SPSS 20 Program for Windows. From the result of the data analysis shows that Ryx1x2 = 0.655 at the significance level of 0.05, and for the criteria of significant test is gotten Fcount (37.037) > Ftable (4.08). So, the result of hypothesis test shows that there is significant correlation among students’ reading interest, reading comprehension, and their intralingual translation achievement of the sixth semester students of English Education Department of STKIP Muhammadiyah Kotabumi, North Lampung in the academic year of 2013/2014. Key words: Reading Interest, Reading Comprehension, and Intralingual Translation Achievement.

Abstract

AbstractContrastive Analysis between English and Indonesian Word Formation”. The main problems of this study were as follows : (1) what are the differences between English and Indonesian word formation? (2) what are the similarities between English andIndonesian word formation? (3) What are some possible learning problems faced by Indonesian students in learning word formation in English ?. The objectives of this study were to know the differences and similarities between English and Indonesian word formation and the possible learning problem faced by Indonesian students inlearning word formation in English.In this study, the writer used descriptive method. The data were collected through documentation technique from English and Indonesian books which are relevant to the problem of the study. The data were analyzed by identifying the differences and the similarities of the word formationin the two language.The differences between English and Indonesian word formation are in the form of Affixation, confixation, Infixation, Simulfixation and Reduplication. The similarities between English and Indonesian word formation are in the form Prefixation, Suffixation, Blend, Clipping, Back-Formation and Acronym.Keywords : Contrastive Analysis, Word Formation
