Abstract

This research is motivated by the lack of scientific research on the elements that form the tourist attraction of Depati VII Coffee as a popular tourist attraction in Sungai Penuh City. In addition, there are still aspects of tourism that need to be arranged and developed to suit the concept of cultural and educational tourism that is carried out. This study aims to analyze the tourist attractions of Depati VII Coffee based on the experiences and perceptions of visitors, as well as identify the factors that contribute most to the attraction of the destination. The research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation, then analyzed through the process of reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawn. The results of the study show that the attractiveness of Depati VII Coffee is formed from a combination of tourist activities, natural beauty, distinctive products, regional aesthetics, and supporting facilities. Social activities, recreation, and education are the dominant attractions that provide a complete experience for visitors. Natural beauty such as a beautiful atmosphere, cool air, and expanse of coffee gardens also strengthen the comfort of tourists. Local coffee products are a distinctive identity that distinguishes Depati VII Coffee from other destinations, while adequate facilities support the smooth running of tourism activities even though there are still shortcomings such as limited shelters and internet networks. Overall, Depati VII Coffee has a comprehensive appeal that reflects a combination of natural elements, education, culture, and visitor experience. Strengthening aspects of cultural identity and education is needed so that this destination can develop more optimally. Abstract

Nigeria possesses tropical forests that have undergone extensive deforestation, particularly in the Cross River region. The palm oil industry has displaced forests that hold vital significance for the global environment. Efforts to address the resulting impacts have prompted the involvement of the Rainforest Resource and Development Centre (RRDC) to mitigate the issue. The initiatives undertaken by RRDC in combating forest deforestation in Cross River are discussed in detail in this study. This research employs a qualitative approach based on secondary data, using document analysis from books, national and international journals, official reports of international institutions, and news articles. The analysis of the NGO’s role refers to John McCormick’s theoretical perspective. The findings reveal that RRDC’s strategies include collaborating with elected officials, bureaucrats, and corporate employees; conducting campaigns and organizing public protests; enhancing media engagement and environmental awareness; and pursuing litigation as well as monitoring the enforcement of environmental laws. Overall, this study highlights the significant role of local NGOs in promoting environmental justice and governance, particularly in efforts to reduce corporate-driven deforestation in developing countries such as Nigeria. Abstract

This study discusses the capability of the Public Works and Spatial Planning Office (PUPR) of Pekanbaru City in managing drainage within the city during 2023–2024. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques consisting of document analysis, field observation, and interviews with relevant stakeholders within the PUPR Office. The theoretical framework used in this research is Leonard-Barton’s (1992) concept of Core Capabilities, which includes four main dimensions: Knowledge and Skills, Technical Systems, Managerial Systems, and Values and Norms. The results of the study indicate that the capability of the Public Works and Spatial Planning Office of Pekanbaru City in managing drainage remains reactive. Several obstacles were identified, including limited budget allocation, insufficient technical expertise of human resources, low community awareness regarding drainage cleanliness, and weak coordination between divisions within the PUPR Office. This research concludes that drainage governance in Pekanbaru has not yet operated optimally, as the current approach predominantly focuses on short term operational actions rather than strategic, data-driven planning. Therefore, integrating information technology, improving human resource capacity, increasing budget allocation, and strengthening community participation are essential strategies to achieve modern, efficient, and sustainable drainage governance. Abstract

This study examines Thailand’s gastrodiplomacy strategy through the Kitchen of the World program in the United States during the 2021–2023 period. Gastrodiplomacy is a form of public diplomacy that utilizes cuisine as an instrument of soft power to build national image and expand cultural influence. This research employs a qualitative approach using library research methods by analyzing academic books, scholarly journals, official government documents of Thailand, and relevant online sources. The analytical framework is based on soft power theory, the concept of gastrodiplomacy, and nation branding. The findings indicate that Thailand has systematically implemented gastrodiplomacy through several integrated strategies, including culinary campaigns via the Thai SELECT certification, the organization of food-related events, product marketing strategies, coalition-building with the Thai diaspora and private sector, and extensive use of media for cultural promotion. The United States was selected as a strategic target due to its multicultural society and high demand for ethnic cuisine. The implementation of the Kitchen of the World program has contributed to enhancing Thailand’s positive national image, expanding the global network of Thai restaurants, and increasing the export of Thai food products to the United States. This study concludes that gastrodiplomacy through the Kitchen of the World program serves as an effective soft power instrument in advancing Thailand’s national interests and strengthening bilateral relations between Thailand and the United States. Keywords: Gastrodiplomacy; Kitchen of the World; Soft Power; Thai SELECT, Thailand, United States.

Abstract

Tourism infrastructure management is a crucial aspect of supporting the sustainability and quality of a tourist destination. This study aims to describe and analyze the management of infrastructure at Pantai Ketam, Pongkar Village, Karimun Regency. The research focuses on management mechanisms viewed from four management functions: planning, organizing, actuating, and controlling, across the dimensions of accessibility, utilities, and service networks. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques including observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results indicate that infrastructure management at Pantai Ketam is still informal and family-based. In the planning and organizing stages, development strategies are carried out gradually and orally without a formal structure. The implementation stage shows optimal results in the aspects of main road access and service networks (gazebos and art stages), but still faces constraints in water utility capacity and internal parking arrangement. Meanwhile, monitoring is conducted manually by the manager and through periodic reviews by the Village Government. Based on these findings, it is necessary to increase utility infrastructure capacity and formalize governance to ensure tourist comfort and destination sustainability. Abstract

The issue of waste management at the village level has become a significant challenge in achieving a clean and sustainable environment. Tumang Village, Siak Subdistrict, Siak Regency, faces an increasing volume of waste due to population growth and low community awareness in sorting and managing household waste. As a solution, the Tumang Village Government initiated an innovation in waste management through the establishment of the Lestari Waste Bank in collaboration with SD Negeri 10 Tumang, the Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK), and the community. This program is an implementation of Siak Regency Regional Regulation Number 11 of 2012 on Waste Management Guidelines and Village Regulation Number 02 of 2021 on Waste Management and Environmental Cleanliness, aiming to raise environmental awareness and provide economic benefits to the community. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques including interviews, observation, and documentation. Primary data were obtained from the Village Head, Waste Bank administrators, PKK members, teachers, and residents, while secondary data came from official village documents, activity reports, and relevant scientific literature. Data analysis was carried out through data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions, using Everett M. Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovation Theory as the analytical framework. The results indicate that the waste management innovation in Tumang Village successfully increased community awareness of environmental cleanliness, strengthened mutual cooperation, and provided economic benefits through recycling activities. Although there are still challenges such as limited facilities and consistency of community participation, the program has proven effective in encouraging social behavior change and serves as a good practice example in realizing the “Green Siak” vision toward sustainable environmental governance. Abstract

This study aims to identify the implementation of the Community Based Tourism (CBT) approach and the obstacles encountered in managing the Gurun Telaga Biru tourist attraction. This research employs a qualitative method with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and documentation. The results indicate that the implementation of CBT involves the participation of local communities in the utilization of natural resources, community organization, and tourism management. The obstacles identified include unclear land ownership status in the tourism area, limited human resources, uneven management of tourism activities, and the influence of natural and weather conditions. Based on these findings, it is recommended to strengthen coordination with relevant institutions that have authority and understanding regarding land status, enhance community capacity through training and assistance, organize tourism activities and business locations in a more coordinated manner, and strengthen cooperation among managers, communities, and related stakeholders to support the sustainability of community based tourism management. Abstract

The doa padang tradition in Seberang Gunung Village, Gunung Toar District, Kuantan Singingi Regency is a customary ritual performed before farming that contains rich cultural, spiritual, and social values. This study aims to analyze the meanings of rituals and symbols in the doa padang tradition and its role in strengthening the community’s social cohesion. The research uses a descriptive qualitative method with seven informants selected purposively through interviews, observation, and documentation, with data validity tested through triangulation. The results show that doa padang functions not only as a religious ritual but also as a form of symbolic communication that reinforces social relationships, spirituality, and cultural identity. The ritual consists of three main sta pre-ritual, implementation, and post-ritual each reflecting the values of togetherness, gratitude, and solidarity within the community. Cultural symbols such as dulang, calempong, traditional food, prayers, customary advice, and the Kuantan Malay language hold social and spiritual meanings that illustrate the harmony between humans, nature, and God. Based on George Herbert Mead’s Symbolic Interactionism theory, this tradition serves as a medium of symbolic interaction that fosters collective awareness to preserve the community’s traditional, moral, and social values. Abstract

Child labor exploitation in cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) represents a global paradox where the green energy transition in developed countries depends on supply chains supported by the exploitation of up to 40,000 children in hazardous conditions. Extreme poverty reaches 72.9% of the population, weak law enforcement, and the absence of state protection functions make the DRC case the most severe in the world, opening space for intervention by the International Labour Organization (ILO) as an international actor with a specific employment mandate. This study employs a qualitative method with a literature review approach and is grounded in the international organization theory of Barnett and Finnemore, which positions the ILO as an autonomous actor with normative and epistemic power, complemented by a constructivist perspective to understand the process of socialization of norms prohibiting child labor. Through this framework, the ILO is analyzed based on three main functions: creating and disseminating global norms, overseeing state compliance through technical oversight mechanisms, and filling institutional gaps through the COTECCO and GALAB programs. The findings show that the ILO successfully transformed the discourse on child labor from a family economic issue to a serious human rights violation through harmonizing national law with Conventions No. 138 and No. 182. The ILO developed the Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation Systems (CLMRS), withdrew 1,527 children from mines, prevented 6,464 children from entering child labor, and strengthened government institutional capacity and family economic support. Effectiveness has been qualitatively proven in improving child protection conditions in intervention areas, although limited by political instability, weak law enforcement, and the complexity of global cobalt supply chains. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the management of Trans Metro Pekanbaru by the Urban Transport Management Unit (UPT Pengelolaan Angkutan Perkotaan) under the Department of Transportation of Pekanbaru City through four public management functions: planning, organizing, actuating, and controlling. Public transportation plays a vital role in supporting urban mobility, yet its implementation often encounters challenges ranging from limited infrastructure to inter-agency coordination issues. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques including interviews, documentation, and field observations. The results show that in terms of planning, the UPT has developed annual operational plans and route mapping, but implementation is often hindered by budget limitations and lack of synergy among local agencies. Regarding organizing, the organizational structure is in place, but work distribution is uneven and technical task assignments are suboptimal. In the actuating aspect, the unit has made efforts to improve staff performance through routine briefings and internal evaluations, but these efforts lack continuous training and motivation systems. For controlling, supervision still relies heavily on manual systems, which hampers effective reporting and responsiveness to operational issues. The study recommends strengthening human resource capacity, digitizing supervision systems, and establishing regular coordination forums among local agencies to improve the sustainability of Trans Metro Pekanbaru services. Keywords: Trans Metro Pekanbaru, public transportation management, planning, organizing, actuating, controlling, Urban Transport Management Unit.
