Abstract

The study aims to describe Lithostratigraphy based on verticaldistribution of sediment fractions in western part of Rupat Strait. The sedimentsamples were taken in May 2014 from 9 sampling points and 3 stations by usinggravity cores. The position of the sampling point was determined by usingpurposive sampling method. Each sample obtained from core samples wasdivided into 3. All the sediment samples were analyzed by using mechanicalanalysis. The analysis showed that the sediment in the area was dominated by thesand fraction with percentages ranging from 58.59 to 98.31 % with the highestpercentage was located at the sampling point 2 middle layer and the lowest at 5sampling points lower layers. Sediment grain size did not undergo significantdifference vertically. At station 1 the changes in sediment grain size was onlyfound at the sampling point 3 middle layer. Sediment grain size at station 2changed at the sampling point 4 middle layer and the top layer 6 sampling pointswhile the grain size of the sediment contained in station 3 occurs at the samplingpoint 7 layers above and below the layer 9 sampling points. Based on clusteranalysis the sediment layer of western part of Rupat strait IV can be divided intogroups based on five characteristics of sediments and in each group showed thatthe difference was not significant. Keywords : Stratigraphy, Sedimentary, Rupat Strait

Abstract

In floating cage fish culture activities, degradation of feed remain and fish feces willincrease the Phosphate content in the surrounding area. A research aims to understand thePhosphate concentration in the water from the cage area and from the area that has no cage hasbeen done from July - November 2014. There were 3 stations, namely 200 m upstream nof thecage area (S1), in the cage area (S2) and 200 m downstream of the cage area (S3). Samplingswere conducted in the DAM site 4 times, once/2 weeks. In each station, water samples werecollected from 3 different depth, surface; 2 secchi and 4 secchi depths. Parameters measuredwere pH, Phosphate concentration, Dissolved Oxygen, transparancy, temperature and depth. Results shown that the concentration of Phosphate in the S1was 0.03 mg/L – 0.13 mg/L; in theS2 was 0.13 mg/L – 0.35 mg/L; and in the S3 was 0.07 mg/L – 0.22 mg/L. The highestconcentration of the Phosphate was in S2, while the lowest was in the upstream (S1). Phosphateconcentration indicates that the DAM site area of the Koto Panjang can be classified aseutrophic, especially in the area around the cage. Other water quality parameter measured weretemperature: 30.6oC – 31oC; transparancy 1.98 m – 2.55 m; depth 27 m – 40 m; pH 5 and freeCO2: 4.66 mg/L- 15.31 mg/L. the values of water quality parameters indicate that the waterquality in the DAM site of the Koto Panjang is good and might be able to support the life ofaquatic organisms in thet area. Keywords: phosphate, cage fish culture,Koto Panjang Dam

Abstract

This research was conducted in May 2014 in the western part of the RupatStrait Riau Province with its aims to determine the distribution of benthicforaminifera and sedimentation relative velocity. The determination of samplingpoints was done by using purposive sampling method. The sediments were taken byusing Eckman Grab then preserved with Rose Bengal mixed by formalin .The results showed that benthic foraminifera was found in higher amounts inthe north and south of the study site. By contrast, the smaller number was found inthe middle of the strait and the shoreline with the mangrove. These areas werepredominantly influenced by the high flow of current and mangrove area, withrelatively moderate sedimentation velocity. In West Rupat the waters was dividedinto 3 clusters based on the data distribution of benthic species foraminefera namely:group I was found in the northern, central and southern part of the study sites, characterized by dominating species of Reussella hayasakai, Textularia orbica andBolivina humilis and sediment classified as very fine sand; group II was found in thenorthern part of the study site with species that as dominated wereFissuripolymorphina aequicellaris, Rosalina Concina and Bolivina humilis with highorganic matter content in the study sites; group III was found in the southern part ofresearch location with the dominating species were Ammonia beccari, Textulariaarticulata and Textularia neoconica with the bottom sediments belonging to very finesand. Keywords : benthic foraminifera, sediment, Rupat Strait..

Abstract

Ciguatera Fish Poisoning (CFP), can be caused by ciguatoxin from groups such as the bhentic dinoflagellate of Gambierdiscus sp., Ostreopsis sp., and Prorocentrum sp.,the bhentic dinoflagellates potentially toxic. In addition as bhentic organisms these three bhenthic dinoflagellates also found associated with brown algae, red algae, coral fragments and also attached on seaweed . Research on the distribution of the toxic dinoflagellate benthic Sargassum sp in the coastal waters of Sungai Nipah Beach of Pesisir Selatan Regency of West Sumatra Province was conducted in April 2014 with the to analyze the abundance and distribution of benthic dinoflagellate Gambierdiscus sp. Ostreopsis sp Prorocentrum sp. The study was conducted by taking a substrate attachment of benthic dinoflagellates from the seaweed, and then put them in a plastic screen of sea water. For the releasing of the benthic dinoflagellate the process agitation and filtration were used with filter of 250μm and 20μm. The samples observed by using microscope and Sedgwick Rafter Cell. The highest abundance was found at stations with high density (45.85 cells/gram). The research showed that the abundance and distribution of toxic dinoflagellate types of seaweed in coastal waters in Sungai Nipah was more influenced by local currents. Keywords : Dinoflagellata, Distribution, Sargassum sp, West Sumatera
