Abstract

Keywords: cultural identity, ambivalence, postcolonialismSince Indian people gained their freedom in 1947, many of them have migrated to other countries. The migration creates an identity crisis. It is because the original culture which is brought from the homeland is very different from the new culture in new environment. The differences of both cultures make an Indian diaspora confused to which cultural identity they practice and maintain. In one hand, an Indian diaspora want to adapt the new culture. On the other hand, an Indian diaspora want to maintain their original culture. In this case an Indian diaspora experience the ambivalence. This research is aimed to reveal  Santosh’s ambivalences in One Out OfMany by V.S Naipaul and how he constructs his cultural identity. This research uses qualitative method and employs two concepts, namely ambivalence and cultural identity with postcolonial approach. The result shows someambivalences within Santosh. Ambivalence happens in aspect of values, belief, andthe using of currency. Besides, this research reveals how Santosh constructs his cultural identity by combining and negotiating both cultures, and how he getsdressed. The writer suggests the next researchers to use the biographical approach and compare One Out Of Many story with other works by V.S Naipaul, because most ofhis works portray identity crisis and cultural identity construction. The researcher canbe focused on why most of his works are related to  those topics.

Abstract

Keywords: cultural invasion, beauty myth, African-American, Toni Morrison, TheBluest Eye Cultural invasion aims to brainwash marginalized group to make them follow the culture of the invader. It influences each component of way of life, including the way women build a concept of beauty. In fact, the concept of beauty is influenced by the White as a dominant group. The Bluest Eye novel by Toni Morrison explores Pecola Breedlove, a victimized African-American girl of White beauty standard. Therefore, the study conducted investigates on how the era of 1940s, as the setting of time of the novel, shapes the beauty standard and how the images of beauty are constructed through culture. In addition, this study observes on what are the impacts of beauty myth to Pecola Breedlove. Socio-cultural approach is used in this study since it deals with one’s relation with society and its culture. This approach leads to the use of cultural invasion’s theory to analyse sociological condition when the inferior culture is invaded by the superior one. Whereas, theories of ideology, power, and hegemony are applied to analyse capitalism issue. The last, to discover Pecola Breedlove’s perspective of ideal beauty, the concept of beauty myth purposed by Naomi Wolf is used. The result of this research shows that through four kinds of cultural commodities, girl’s dolls, girl favourite stars, mass media, and movie stars, the beauty myth are infused to change the African-American’s perspective of beauty. Succeedingly, cultural invasion gives two impacts to Pecola Breedlove, adoration to the White beauty standard and obsession to have blue eyes. The following researcher is suggested to explore another significant character, Claudia Macteer, especially on her resistance against White beauty myth by using Black feminism theory. Furthermore, archetypal literary criticism, specifically the using of seasons in Northrop Frye’s archetypal schema is applicable since Claudia’s life moves through a cycle of four seasons—autumn, winter, spring, and summer.

Abstract

Keywords: Cooperative Principle, Flouting Maxims, Violating Maxims, ResolvingStrategies, Intended Meanings, Wild Child Movie. Language becomes an important thing for people as the part of the society becausethey need language in their communication. In making communication more effectiveand to make sentences more acceptable to the hearer, it can be measured by applying cooperative principle consisting of four maxims proposed by Grice (2004), but in the real communication, that principle is not always being obeyed by the speaker and this phenomenon is called flouting and violating maxim. The writer conducts a study on “Wild Child” movie which shows the violating and flouting maxims phenomena occurring between the main characters. There are three problems of this study: (1) what maxims are violated and flouted in the main characters’ utterances of Wild Child movie in the exposition and conflict plot (2) How are the implied meaningsresolved by the interlocutors from the utterances being violated and flouted in WildChild movie (3) What are the intended meanings of the utterances being violated andflouted in Wild Child movie. This study uses the qualitative approach because the analysis is in the form of description rather than numbers. Then, the writer analyzes the main characters’ utterances. This study reveals that violating and flouting maxims are applied in themovie. There are 19 dialogues containing violating and flouting maxims, and the most violated and flouted is maxim of quantity. From violating and flouting maxims uttered by the main characters, their interlocutors use three resolving strategies: negotiation, contextual knowledge exploitation, and combination strategies in resolving the intended meanings. There are some intended meanings found, such as giving more information to hearer, maintaining good relationship, making jokes, supporting hearer, agreeing statement, persuading and showing surprise. Then, most of intended meanings from the utterances being violated and flouted are Showing Surprise and persuading hearer strategies. The most maxims that violated and flouted in the movie was quantity, it is shown by the main character in the movie by giving more information to the hearer in every conversation she made. The main character showed her ignorance and her being spoilt as a new student of Abbey Mount, a girlboarding school in rural of England. The writer suggests that the next researchers will analyze about the violating andflouting maxims in different plot, such as climax, falling action because the analysisabout resolving strategies will be more interesting. The writer also suggests that thenext researcher will use different theories about context that help to define theimplicit meaning, such as the relevance theory.
