Abstract

This paper is focused on the alienation which caused by nation in Rilda A.Oe Taneko’s short story entitled “Antara Den Haag dan Delft”. Independent nation which is simply a rewriting of what has been taken away by the colonizer created fixation of space which can not accommodate all interests. This circumstance forced ‘kakek’ (an old man) in the short story to imagine the ideal space outside the nation. However, in the utopia kakek feels alienated. This paper used the Postcolonial theory by Sara Upstone  which conceptualize that the independent nation and colonizer do the same act, they just covered the instability in the space of nation. In the attempt to achieve independence, nation used the slogan unity in diversity. The instability  led a journey to the utopia city where there is no limitations in place. Kakek in the short story feels alienated in the utopia city because of the cover of instability in the form of his love to the nation that given to him. Anything that is not a part of his nation turned into something strange.  Keywords: alienation, utopia, love to the nation.

Abstract

Abstract This writing tries to see nationalism reflected from a short story entitled “Mardijker” by Damhuri Muhammad using postcolonial perspective. This short story also contain historical background about Belanda Depok, a group of slaves who work for Dutch landlord in Depok, Cornelis Chastelein, which later he released all the slaves. Postcolonial perspective is used to identify nationalism reflected from the character of the story, whether it is a centrifugal or a centripetal nationalism. The analysis is done in contextual level of nationalism, which is considered as a will to establish a world which in that world, East can actualize their self in a free way, without any pressure from West. The nationalism that present in the short story is a centripetal nationalism which pulled back the memories to the past and considered that the world had been exist before and can be found again. Keywords: nationalism, postcolonialism, centripetal nationalism.

Abstract

This research underlies the analysis on the performance and performativity of characters in shonen-ai: Sekaiichi Hatsukoi, Henshin Dekinai, and Himananode Hajimete Mimashita manga. Characterization in shonen-ai manga is based on the characters’ role within the same-sex relationship, which are the male role (seme) and the female role (uke). The character of Seme tends to be aggressive, protective, smart, good looking, and unemotional. On the other hand, Uke is feminine, smaller, physically weak, insecure, and emotional. The writer would like to analyze whether performance align with performativity based on the characterization of seme and uke. Judith Butler’s Performativity is used as theoretical framework within the research. The theory covers gender, performance, and performativity. Gender as social construction is fluid and unbound to the body. This phenomenon is seen in these three shonen-ai manga. Character that looks masculine does not always have the male role (seme) and the feminine one does not always have the female role (uke). Physical performance is not merely associated with gender (performativity). Keywords: shonen-ai manga, same-sex relationship, performativity, gender.

Abstract

Magic Realism Prose brings the magic and the reality at once in a narration. Reality and magic have mutual support to build a narration. The support between the reality and the magic is not only manifested in the unity of the narration but also gives the possibility to give the meaning that goes beyond the narration itself. In other words, the meaning also gives the magic realism experience for the readers. This paper will analyze the form of magic realism in Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s short story entitled “Light is Like Water”, Triyanto Triwikromo’s short story entitled “Sayap Kabut Sultan Ngamid”, and A.S. Laksana’s short story entitled “Dongeng Cinta yang Dungu”.Keywords: real, magic, prose, magic realism.

Abstract

Today, the studies on post-colonial urban space in relation with Indonesian modern prose can be said to be minimal. On the other hand, in the history of Indonesian literature, we are endowed with writers like Armijn Pane, Idrus, Pramoedya Ananta Toer, Iwan Simatupang, Budi Darma etc., who consistently write prose with the background of the ex-colonial towns. Unfortunately, there is no enough studies of the encounter between those writers with the city as a representation of a post-colonial experience. This paper tried to track the integral relationship between Indonesian modern prose writers to the city by using the spatial space theory in relation to the study of post-colonial literature in Indonesia. This analysis used the spatial theory by Sara Upstone as the approach, especially regarding to space (spatial) city. Keywords: spatial, city, postcolonial.
