Abstract

This research is aimed to acknowledge the disclosure of Islamic ethics in sharia banking business practices. Islamic banks have a different concept of understanding compared to a conventional bank in implementing the practices of collecting and channeling funds. Islamic economic system has stipulated mandatory regulations in every financial transaction of Islamic banks. Finding the balance on implementing business practices and religious orders have become the primary consideration of Islamic banks. The social responsibility as a higher priority has constructed Islamic banks with different ethical identity in contrast to the one conventional bank has. Having the ethical identity grants Islamic banks with a distinguishable unique characteristic. For  the Islamic banks, the compatibility of Islamic ethics in its practices becomes one of the strengths in thriving among the highly competitive banking industry. This research is a textual analysis which discusses Islamic ethics on Islamic banks business. The methodology applied in this research is qualitative descriptive. Based on the findings, it is revealed that sharia banking in Indonesia has not yet been ideal in implementing Islamic ethics in its business practices. Islamic banks show the presence of similarity between Islamic and conventional banks in terms of service behavior.

Abstract

This paper explains about the poverty experienced by women who become the backbone of the family. They are known as the Head of Female Household (KRTP). The research is located in Tulusbesar Village, Tumpang Sub-district, Malang Regency. KRTP is caused by husband died, divorced, husband sick, abandoned husband, and husband with disable. The feminization of poverty is seen from how the source of income KRTP and how the allowance system or social aids have not overcome the KRTP’s poverty yet. In this paper, the source of income of KRTP is viewed from income public transfers and income private transfers. The income private transfers are obtained from ex-husband or family, while the income public transfers are non-occupational income, derived from the government consisting of Jalin Matra, BLT, BPJS, and PKH programs as social aids. All KRTPs in Tulusbesar Village have received social aid, but the four existing social aids have not been accepted by the KRTP overall. In private transfer, based on the results of the study there are 20 KRTPs who have received help from their families and 36 KRTPs do not get help from their families. The life of the KRTP in Tulusbesar village after receiving social aids is still experiencing the vulnerability of poverty, because the social aids received are temporary and only lasts short term. Thus, it makes KRTP more vulnerable to poverty.

Abstract

In 2012, a report by the Kabupatan Banjar (South Kalimantan) identified 35 villages of approximately 40,000 residents, in grave need of drinking water. I initially engaged a local non-profit, Yayasan Kaganangan Banua and in time, a local engineering consultancy, Solusi Berinovasi Indonesia. With a team of Indonesians and some expatriates, we began creating a local, sustainable, reproducible, and culturally acceptable solution. By applying action research, we have the flexibility to develop more effective solutions through a series of ongoing iterations in real time. First we listened to the people, understanding them and building trust. This enabled us to establish buy-in which formed the foundation to begin challenging cultural norms in the areas of health and water use. Only then could we begin constructing the infrastructure. The systems are made entirely from local materials and we train locals in both the health education and construction techniques for the purpose of sustainable replication. Today, this project has successfully provided drinking water, year round, to over 500 people with a annual economic impact of over 500 juta across 70 systems in 6 villages. In addition, our team is contributing to most of the SDGs. When we focus first on people and genuine community relationships, regardless of nationality, age, religion, language or culture, we can together overcome the hardest problems and see generational transformation.
