The learning of the Sekolah Luar Biasa (SLB) focused on the diversity of abilities and potential of students. This need can be facilitated by modifying the curriculum based on assessment of students, which is then used as the basis for making the Program Pembelajaran Individu (PPI). The study was conducted on Jakarta SLBN X teachers who began to modify the curriculum, but were not yet maximal. The study uses quantitative methods with qualitative data as supporting data. Quantitative data was obtained through measuring instruments of knowledge and attitudes towards the making of PPIs filled by 29 teachers. While qualitative data was obtained through interviews with nine teachers based on the results of quantitative data categorization (lacking, sufficient, good). The results showed that 34% had insufficient knowledge, 59% were sufficient, and 7% were good about making PPIs. While 45% of teachers have a lack of attitude and are quite positive, and 10% of teachers are categorized as good in their attitude towards making PPIs. Different tests show there are differences in the attitudes of teachers who have and have never attended workshops on handling students with special needs. Qualitative data shows that the factors that play a role in making PPI are lack of knowledge of teachers in making PPIs, regulations in schools that have not required the making of PPIs, and lack of time to prepare PPIs.

Abstract

The notion of dwarfs as inferior members of the society is a long-held belief amongst the Yoruba ethnic group of south-western Nigeria. By virtue of their size, dwarfs are objects of amusements and ridicule and denied political and leadership opportunities. They cannot become kings, hold chieftaincy titles; serve as heads of family, village heads or occupy leadership positions. In spite of persistence of this discrimination, there is a dearth of research on dwarfs' socio-political life. And this raises some pertinent questions: what is the socio-historical conception of dwarfism among the Yoruba people? What are the socio-cultural barriers placed on the dwarfs? What are the effects of these on dwarfs' psycho-political participation as members of the society? And, how do they express their socio-psychological and political affinities, affiliations, preferences, and feelings? Using participant observation, in depth interviews with key informants and archival search, this study seeks to interrogate these problematic.

Social skills measurement include seven dimensions, that are empathy, cooperation, assertiveness, communication, self-control, participation, and responsibility. The adaptation process includes translation, back-translation, and expert judgment. Legibility tests then were conducted on 10 students with special needs. Reliability test shows that the measurement has an Alpha value of 0.833. Confirmatory Factor Analysis is done to see the loading factor of each item in the measuring instrument for students with special needs in inclusive primary schools. It was found that 24 items (three items with a loading factor below the good value is preserved) in the instrument had a factor loading ranging between 0.04-0.70 (RMSEA = 0.063, IFI = 0.89 and GFI = 0.80). Based on these results, it can be concluded that SSIS measuring instruments that have been adapted into Indonesian is valid and reliable to measure the social skill of special need primary students. Abstract

Stroke is one of the leading causes of severe handicap, disabling and impairing the ability to walk in 80% of all stroke survivors. Physiotherapists, all over the globe, use Observational gait analysis as a preferred method of gait assessment in their clinical practice to assess, monitor change, evaluate treatment and identify areas needing intervention in the rehabilitation of patients with gait disability. The objective of the study was to determine factors affecting the use of observational gait analysis in assessment of stroke survivors among physiotherapy practitioners at the University Teaching Hospital. The study was a cross sectional descriptive study aimed at determining the knowledge and factors affecting use of observational gait analysis and the adaption thereof as a Standard Observational Gait Assessment Tool at the University Teaching Hospital. The essential factors to the use of assessment tools were lack of guidelines and lack of knowledge on use of OGA. Also a lack of organizational support, lack of formal knowledge and no availability of assessment tools. To overcome these barriers, it is necessary to provide training of standardized assessment, and to recommend appropriate guidelines.

Abstract

Many stroke survivors usually have permanent disability such as aphasia, which results in the need for support from caregivers. Care required for stroke survivors differs depending on the type of stroke but there is little research done in this regard. However, current literature provides evidence that support services and interventions for caregivers, especially in relation to managing affective symptoms, are unsatisfactory. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of caregivers handling aphasic stroke patients at the University Teaching Hospital. An explorative study utilizing qualitative phenomenological approach was utilized with sample of 15 participants who by purposeful sampling were drawn and using thematic method of analysis. This study found that caregivers go through a lot of things in caring for their loved ones and their experience involve a complicated and sometimes unpredictable interplay of multiple processes. Lack of preparedness in assuming the role of caregiving caused the caregivers to go through what seemed to be insurmountable challenges. There is therefore need of caregiver education so that they can deliver appropriate care to the stroke survivors.
