Abstract

Interactive White Board (IWB) in English Language ClassIstiqomah Wulandari, M. Ed.Study Program of English of Department of Languages and Literature, Faculty of Cultural Studies Universitas Brawijaya Malang Indonesiaistiqomah@ub.ac.idThe education sector has been affected by the growth of technology and has taken great advantages in connecting science and technology sides by side to reach the outmost result. One of the emerging technology devices used in teaching and learning in the classroom is the Interactive White Board (IWB) (Becta, 2004). Many researchers have been conducted to see how the implementation of IWB in the class room, such as the researches done by Cuthell in 2010 and by Kennewell (2006) shown that IWB adds some positive values in teaching and learning experiences. Based on that phenomenon, I decided to analyse and investigate the usage of IWB in the classroom and try to see their implications to TESOL particularly in area of technology use in language learning. Keywords: IWB, technology, English Class

Abstract

Women are often treated as commodities which in the production process accept normalization to increase their selling value. Through her novel, Collins presented Katniss as a subject of objectification in order to create a discourse on commodity fethisism through media. The objectification also included the alteration of her image as a woman. This research was conducted with the aim of revealing how the image of a woman was constructed to display a particular ideology and how Katniss's deviation from objectification actually turned her out to be another kind of commodity fethisim object. By utilizing theoretical concepts of Marx's commodity fethisism and Butler's gender construction, this study focused on the discussion of the construction of a woman's image which was attached to the main character of the novel, Katniss Everdeen, and then objectified, and also the discourse of commodity fethisism that arised along with it. In the process of analysis, this research used descriptive analytical methods which described the objectification and commodification of Katniss as a woman as an attempt of normalization to confirm a power discourse in patriarchal capitalist society. Furthermore, the later phenomenon of commodity fethisism that was present because of its failure thus showed the collapse of the patriarchal discourse imposed on Katniss as a woman, but at the same time gave rise to other patriarchal ideologies. Keywords: commodity fethisism, women's image, objectification and normalization, gender construction.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine EFL students' cognitive processing, notably based on their epistemic beliefs views and learning strategies towards self-directed online learning. A descriptive quantitative method was used to explore 100 students' learning strategies. The focus is on examining individual knowledge construction through active cognitive engagement on English language exposures and aquisition in online community. The results suggest that students with more sophisticated epistemic beliefs have different learning strategies compare to those who posses simple ones. Students' characteristics which appear to impact their use of learning strategies are discussed. Suggestions for instructional strategies are offered.

Abstract

This study focuses on the comparison between the image of totok Tionghoa-Indonesian and peranakan female characters, particularly in the economic, educational and marital spheres in Indoneisan Literature, namely Pecinan: Suara Hati Sang Perempuan Tionghoa written by Ratna Indraswari Ibrahim. The foundation of the theory used is the socialist feminism proposed by Alison Jaggar who adopted the spirit of Marxism in the context of feminism. The research method applied is descriptive qualitative. The results show that totok Tionghoa-Indonesian women received more pressure than peranakans. Peranakan women have wider social space because they have already had legitimate citizenship. The conclusion of this study is that it is inevitable for women to be marginalized in the production process in the perspective of socialist feminism, since gender discrimination has become part of human nature that is very difficult to change.

Abstract

This study employs a correlational design that is to find out the relationship between achievement motivation and the students’ speaking performance. The aim of this study obtains the level of students’ achievement motivation and their speaking performance. This study also reveals the relationship between the variables. The questionnaire with four Likert-scale was used to measure the students’ level in this study. It was the adaptation of the Contextual Achievement Motivation questionnaire. To measure the students' speaking performance, a teacher-made speaking test was used. The questionnaire and the speaking test were administered to undergraduate second-semester students of the English Department, Faculty of Cultural Studies, Universitas Brawijaya. The result of this study showed that there was a significant average positive correlation between achievement motivation level and the students’ speaking performance level (r = .688, sig. = .00). Regarding the result of the students' learning in the speaking class, teachers are expected to be able to recognize their students’ achievement motivation to support and enhance the students' ability in learning. Teachers are expected to encourage the students to be more open and share their difficulties in learning especially in the speaking class. Thus, by having close communication between teachers and the students, it is expected that the students’ problems during the learning process can be solved. The students’ achievement motivation is expected to be higher and stronger in completing the course with high achievement.
