Abstract

Teaching materials especially EFL learning resources are one of important components in language learning, besides other components such as teachers, learners, teaching methodology, and evaluation system. Teaching materials provide learners to get the language input or information which they need for their learning process. Because teaching materials take a very important role in the learning process, they should be appropriate for the learners. It means that there should be some criteria for effective materials which are used by a certain group of learners. This paper four general considerations for effective materials. In the first place, it is the consideration to the nature of the learner group, that deals with some principles such as: the materials should be appropriate for the learners’ level of language development; the materials should challenge learners without frustrating them; and the materials should meet learners’ immediate learning needs. This article also suggests that teaching materials should have twin aims: on the one hand they offer information and data about the language being studied, and in particular about the social context and culture within which communication takes place and derives much of its meaning and value. Keywords: learning resources, material development, design, criteria

Abstract

This paper discusses the importance of both teachers’ and students’ acceptance about the fact that errors are important part of learning process. It is through students’ errors, teacher can observe what students are trying to posses, what notions students have misunderstood and what additional work they might need. For that reason, errors are often seen as a sign of learning in language acquisition process. On the other hand, teachers’ habits in responding students’ spoken errors are varied, showing different reactions they hold towards student’s spoken errors. Some teachers tend to correct all the errors while some tend to be tolerant, and still some others do not correct at all. Corrective feedbacks are provided by the teacher in responding student’s errors. From the language teacher’s point of view, the provision of feedback is a major means to inform learners of the accuracy of both their target language production. Unfortunately, sometimes, feedback as a part of teacherlearner interaction in the class is assumed as a barrier in doing a communication. This paper calls the attention to the importance of applying the appropriate corrective feedbacks toward students’ spoken errors and the impacts of that error correction behavior toward students’ uptake. Keywords: Corrective feedbacks, categories of errors, students’ uptake.

Abstract

Realizing the importance of English acquisition nowadays, various efforts have been conducted in any aspects of life such as in education field. As stated in the Decree of Minister of Education no 20/30, by applying Internationally Standard Schools program starting from elementary to senior high school levels, it is expected that students who take a part in this program are able to use English as their means of communication both inside and outside the classroom that later, they can compete globally in either national or international level. However, although this program has been conducted for more than five years in Indonesia, it does not show satisfying progress. The evidence shows that the ability of the SBI teachers in English is still below the standard which automatically affects the students’ achievement on the subjects delivered in English such as on Math and Science. This paper covers the information on a particular teaching strategy, called as AERP (Activation, Exposure, Repetition, and Production) under the spirit of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) approach, as the alternative way to teach content subjects delivered in English in SBI program. Expectedly, this paper will provide solutions to solve teaching problems in SBI program. Keywords: SBI program, teaching strategy, CLIL approach, and AERP strategy

Abstract

Although the concept of process-based approach in writing instruction in the teaching of EFL becomes popular in the recent years, many English teachers still used conventional method in teaching writing that only concern about the final product with perfect grammar and vocabulary. Thus, many educators suggested the use of a process based approach in teaching writing which is consists of various activities, namely prewriting, drafting, responding, revising, editing, assessing, post-writing, and reflection. Those activities can give students opportunities to improve their writing composition, perhaps motivate them to be a better writer, and of course train them to have critical thinking in order to make optimal interaction of teacherstudent and among students. Keywords: writing process-based approach, portfolio assessment, and process-product assessments.
