Abstract

Being old brings about many consequences which are mostly negative. Viewed as physically weaker, mentally unstable, and socially dependent are driven to a hard time where they need to cope with those bad labels. Successfull geriatrics can pass through the hard time by maintaining their self esteem to meet with self concept. However, not all geriatrics can come to such situation. They are trapped with the labels addressed to them and fail in maintaining the self esteem. Sometimes, alcoholism becomes one of the outlets to lessen the burdens. The Iceman Cometh is the portrayal of how the aged characters run away from bitter reality to alcoholism which is considered the best way to lessen their psychological burden. Therefore, the mode of maladjustment in facing problems which is best viewed from psychological perspective becomes an outstanding facet of the play.

Abstract

This paper discusses the adjustments the teachers should make in their in-classroom setting which contribute to the improvement of students’ performance in the EFL class. The adjustments are shown through the application of Communicative Accommodation Theory (CAT) to the teaching and learning of speaking English as a foreign language. CAT deals with linguistic variation, more specifically, with the results of adjustments and accommodations made by the teachers and students during the communication process. The adjustments are convergent in which both parties try to obtain the addressee’s approval and/or to promote communicative efficiency; both tend to adjust their discourse to each other aiming at intelligibility through mutual identification.  Maintaining a positive social identity is seen as divergent. This paper calls the attention to the implementation of CAT and highlights the importance of an adequate CAT application for improving students’ performance speaking course in English as foreign language setting.

Abstract

A chronicle play written by English dramatis George Bernard Shaw in 1924 entitled Saint Joan is a complex and complete play. It does not only give us understanding about the history of France during the Hundred-Year War but give us also an insight of the struggle of a heroine namely Joan (Jean in French) against the superiority of corrupted people inside the church. As manifested in her actions during the war, Joan is teaching French on how they should fight against the English men under the name of God. By applying content analysis through the elements of the play particularly focused on the actions of the main character, Joan, this library research has proved that Joan’s actions cannot be judged as what Christian Christendom did. Instead of doing heresy Joan’s actions were the materialization of the spirit of Protestantism known and fought previously by Martin Luther, a protestant initiator from German. This research also prove that punishment given to Joan at the end of her life was a political judgment created by some ambitious people within the top hierarchy of catholic church in France at that time.

Abstract

Principles and priorities in language teaching have shifted and changed over the years, often in response to paradigm shifts in linguistics and learning theory. Historically, methods that adhere to empiricist viewpoints have contrasted sharply with those that derive from a rationalist perspective of human learning. The various methodologies and approaches reviewed thus far have experienced differential success and popularity among practitioners. Today, many teachers are adopting an eclectic approach to language learning and teaching, believing that the age-old search for the ‘one true way’ can be futile and frustrating. As we realize that learning is an extremely complex process and that learners are individuals with different personalities, styles, and preferences, we have begun to look for a multiplicity of ways to respond to the challenge of teaching. Eclecticism, however, needs to be principled if instruction is to be effective, and techniques and activities need to be chosen intelligently to relate to specific program objectives. This paper proposes some general principles that might orient our teaching of English in Indonesia toward proficiency goals. The hypothesized principles focus on providing instruction that is meaningful, interactive, and responsive to learner needs.

Abstract

The communicative behaviors of four klian adats were investigated to reveal their choice of politeness strategies that concern their intent to respect their interlocutors’ dignity. Designed as an ethnography of communication, the study used data collected mainly through participant and non-participant observations on the subjects’ communicative behaviors on various occasions of social interaction. Data analysis showed that various appealing strategies are used in the deliverance of acts with a potential to threaten the addressee’s face. The study is concluded with a claim that politeness strategies are related to the concept of face held by the community concerned. The appealing strategies are claimed to be the type of politeness strategies that feed to the addressee’s desires that his dignity be preserved and respected.

Abstract

Teaching letter writing has been regarded as a difficult task in most of circumstances where English is taught as a foreign language. The task is made more difficult when the class is a large class, especially when it comes to the correcting and marking of the students’ paper. In an attempt to minimize the problems of doing the job, many experts have proposed a variety of approaches but none seems to be the right solution. This paper is trying to present an empirical technique of teaching letter writing at Brawijaya University where the average number of the students taking the course is relatively large. And the most plausible technique that can be practiced to relieve the teacher’s burden is the peer correcting and/or peer marking.
