Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this study was to find Indonesian undergraduate EFL students’ perceptions towards the implementation of flipped classroom. This study implemented survey research design and perceptions were found out through questionnaire and the questionnaires were spread to 30 students who experienced the implementation of flipped classroom. The questionnaire consisted of two aspects, namely meaningful and competence aspects. The results of questionnaire of perceptions were statistically calculated. The data on meaningful aspect revealed that mostly the students had positive perceptions toward the implementation of flipped classroom. On the other hand, in competence aspect, the students perceived that flipped classroom was beneficial for their writing competence. However, for the pre-class activities, such as viewing video and reading e-materials, the students had varied perceptions on it. They actually like the idea to have an additional video-lecture and e-material to prepare them before the class, but they did not really see the meaning by doing that pre-class activities.

Good governance in tourism ensures that the industry can involve and benefit the local community.  This paper aims to investigate the policies and practice of good governance in Indonesian tourism using the city of Malang in East Java as a case study. This is done by: (1) a study on the Regulation of the Major of Malang on the Master Plan of the Development of Regional Tourism no. 34 year 2014 and (2) field observations in the city of Malang. The research shows that the regulation has fulfilled six characteristics of good governance: participation, consensus oriented, equity and inclusiveness, effectiveness and efficiency, and accountability but fails to fulfill the three criteria of good governance: the rule of law, the transparency and the responsiveness. On the other hand, on the practices of the good governance, the city government lacks communication with the stakeholders and it is advisable that the city government set this forum in the near future to discuss the solutions to better tourism in Malang. Keywords: Good governance, tourism, Indonesia, Malang

Abstract

This research investigated the rhetorical moves in the introduction part to the research article written by graduate students in Linguistics master's study programs. The primary purpose of this research is to describe the pattern of rhetorical moves in the research article introductions in the field of Linguistics. The data collection technique was in the form of scientific article documentation consisting of seven research article introductions in English in the field of Linguistics. Researchers collected data in the form of text with document analysis and note-taking techniques. These research articles were taken from four different journal publishers in Indonesia, namely Alphabet, Kelasa, Batra, and Suar Betang. The rhetorical analysis in this study involves the concept of the Project Justifying Model (PJM) proposed by Safnil (2010), which consists of four communicative moves that can describe the rhetorical moves of Indonesian writers. The validity of the data in this rhetorical pattern study used the triangulation of sources or data. The results of this study indicate that the seven introductions have different rhetorical moves. The four research article introductions taken from the Alphabet produced fewer rhetorical steps compared to the other three research articles. The most dominant signal found in the seven research article introductions is (move 4, step A) represents a statement in explaining the purpose of the study. The seven research article introductions found no statements that represented the five steps contained in each move.

A presidential debate is one of the campaign media which has a function to promote a presidential candidate to be a president. A linguistics theory of meaning was used to describe the utterances of the illocutionary act. This study was aimed to find a commissive speech act and its function in the first Indonesian presidential debate in 2019. The data source of this study was a video taken from Kompas TV channel on YouTube. The data of this study were utterances produced by the candidates. The data were collected by watching and note-taking techniques. As a result, 20 utterances belonged to the commissive speech act produced by Jokowi, Prabowo, and Sandi. However, there were no commissive speech act utterances produced by Ma'ruf. The conclusion is that the candidates mostly used promise act in producing utterances. The promise acts appear in the future tense, if clause condition sentence, and expression of InsyaAllah. Meanwhile, the function of producing utterances in this study is to show the candidates' capability to gain the consideration of society to vote one of them with a good sympathy.

Abstract

Students are becoming adapted to online self-regulated learning (hereafter, OSEL), which is closely related to students' internet-specific epistemic beliefs (hereafter, ISEB), as the internet became an important platform for the teaching process during the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. This study is aimed at researching the relationship between OSEL and ISEB among EFL students and after establishing the prediction. Data were collected through the questionnaires using the ISEB questionnaire (Kammerer et al., 2015) and the OSEL questionnaire (Zheng et al., 2016). Approximately 140 undergraduate students enrolled in the seventh semester of the English language education study program at a reputable university in Malang, Indonesia involved in this study. Interviews were then conducted to confirm the findings obtained from the questionnaires. The findings showed a substantial correlation between EFL students' ISEB and OSEL, with a correlation coefficient .555 and p-value .000. It also predicted that the higher EFL students' ISEB, the higher their OSEL too. The interview results elucidated support for this prediction. Students' ISEB and OSEL can help them solve their academic problems. Therefore, some pedagogical implications are described to promote better English learning, which uses the internet as one of the media of instruction.

Abstract

Abstract: Implementation of outcome-based Education (OBE) in Indonesia has been urged since 2019. It primes to the need of some adjustments in the higher education curriculum. In Academic writing classes in which English is served as a foreign language, implementation of OBE principles imposes issues as assessment must measure all abilities, skills, and knowledge targeted in the learning outcomes. The challenge escalate with large size classes that lead to a less optimum assessment given to learners’ writing. The need of writing assessment model that obeys OBE principles and facilitates academic writing teachers in coping with complication in providing quality assessment to scads of students in Indonesia is of a paramount importance. Yet, studies aimed at meeting the need are barely conducted. This research, therefore, designs writing assessment model which can (1) measure the expected learning outcomes, (2) monitor student’s abilities, skills and knowledge with regard to their individual learning pace, (3) assist the teachers of writing classes to comprehensively provide rigorous assessment to lots of students. ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) model is employed to reach the research objectives. As the whole process is still on going, this article presents the Analysis and Design stages of the study. It elaborates underlying considerations of the proposed assessment model by reviewing previous studies related to writing assessment and OBE assessment in writing. The descriptions of the illustrated assessment model are presented to provide vivid view of how the assessment model works.

While, seen from the significant level, it showed the number .042 which means there was statistically significant relationship between those two variables. The qualitative finding asserted that the lecturers always gave feedback frequently in the two forms, both were oral and written feedback. Other than that, although only one of the lecturers who used elaborated feedback, they both provide the assistance and objectivity during the assessment process. Based on the results of this study the lecturers must give feedback continuously towards students’ work and it should be given together with an explanation. Moreover, the future researcher can find the similar topic from another learning theory such as behaviorism or cognitivism.
