Abstract

As many errors were found in the translation of thesis abstracts in the Accounting Department of Brawijaya University, the study was conducted to see (1) the kinds of linguistic errors that exist in the translation of the S-1 thesis abstracts of the Accounting Department, and (2) the degree of informativeness in the translation of thesis abstracts. This study was designed by descriptive qualitative research, which intended to describe the fifteen pieces of abstracts taken from five pieces in each batch ranging from the academic year of 2000 to 2002, and then the data were analyzed using content analysis. The result of the study shows that the kinds of linguistic errors are grammatical errors (78%), followed by lexical errors (22%) successively. Although there are more than seventy five percent errors occurred, the translation of the abstracts was still considered positively informative.

Abstract

Daisy Miller: A Study (1878), broadly, is an analysis of various tensions between Europe and America. As the title character and her family travel abroad, they are confronted with customs and traditions of old Europe. An independent and stubborn young woman, Daisy Miller is unwilling to accept these old ideas, as do many Americans living abroad. As a representative of a newer, more liberal method of social interaction, she struggles in an old, conservative society. Daisy Miller: A Study focuses on the behavior of its characters in social situations. Most of the action involves Daisy’s social missteps, followed by discussion of those missteps. Characters constantly refer to their social status and are engaged in bettering their places. Those characters that represent the Europeanized-Americans always consult the European culture and its social values as the standard for judging Daisy’s attitudes. Their judgments are based on the European moral values. This means that, there is a kind of ethnocentrism in the way they think that European culture is superior, and this point of view results in cultural incongruity.

Abstract

Many studies on teacher talk have been done in various parts of the world, and most of them concluded the dominance of teacher in L2 classrooms of young school age learners. This is not surprising since young learners still need supervisions in the use of L2, because they do not have initiative or are not creative enough to use the language. Most of the above studies used their own format of observations due to the unavailability of a standard format. Thus, the result of the study varies in forms. This study supports the study on dominance of the teacher talk to communicate to convey instructions in L2 learning. Various features of communicative strategies occur, but the most preferred ones are code-switching and translation intended to be in the level of comprehensible input of the students.

Abstract

The fact shows that language education closely related to literacy education results in the ability to read and write at a designated level of proficiency. Literacy is also defined as a technical capability to decode or reproduce written or printed signs, symbols, or letters combined into words. However, it has become increasingly common to refer to different forms of literacy, such as computer, mathematical, or graphic literacy. Considering the common techniques used in language teaching, they may contribute to the improvement of the students’ ability in both the basic literacy and functional literacy (i.e. some skill in reading and writing; and the ability to read, write, and calculate figures well enough to carry out activities that many people consider necessary to function in society, respectively). Here, we can notify that functional literacy refers to individual ability in surviving life which also serves as reflection of individual multiple intelligences covering several areas that can be developed over a lifetime. This paper invites the reader to recall several techniques in teaching languages which can also function as the techniques of improving literacy-both basic and functional literacy. In language teaching, the use of, for example, puzzles and games, classification and categorization will lead to logical competence; chart and grids, videos, and drawing will lead to visual/spatial intelligence; hands-on activities and pantomime will lead to body/kinesthetic intelligence; singing and jazz chants will lead to musical/rhythmic intelligence; pair-work and group problem solving will lead to interpersonal intelligence; journal keeping will lead to intrapersonal intelligence; and note-taking, story telling and debates will lead to verbal/linguistic intelligence.

Abstract

Language is dynamic and therefore keeps on changing gradually. The main cause of language change is the need of human as social being to communicate and relate with others. The contact between human and their languages then leads to language change. Nowadays, human contact has never been easier and faster with the emergence of the Internet. The nature of online communication which differs from other forms of communication has certainly affected language change. This paper discusses language change in general and language change influenced by the cyberspace. In general, language first changes in phonetic and then followed by morpho–syntax. Language in cyberspace has distinct characteristics such as text–mediated, quick and efficient, English dominated, and orthographically innovative using abbreviations, numbers and pictures. In the future, languages of the world will be highly affected by English and the nature of text-mediated communication in cyberspace.

Abstract

Both Carl Sandburg and Wiji Thukul are poets whose poems mostly deal with the lives and struggles of common people. Due to this similarity, comparative study is worth doing to dig out more deeply the similarities and the distinctions that may exist due to the different as well as similar social–historical experiences of the poets. The study results that both poets share a similar vision of common people. Both attempt to elevate the condition of common people. Yet the slightly different social-historical experiences enhance a small distinctive attitude. Sandburg tends to insert his admiration as well as pride of being common people in his poems while Wiji Thukul does not.

Abstract

The Indonesian government has nationally implemented the competency–based curriculum of English subject for senior high school in Indonesia since 2004. The recent curriculum has been warmly welcomed by teachers as it is claimed that the curriculum will be more effective in enhancing the teaching learning process than the previous curricula. Some problems, however, may potentially hinder the implementation of the latest curriculum. If these problems remain unsolved, Indonesian people will end up repeating the same failure of the previous curricula: teaching learning process that is far from communicative competence. Therefore, it is recommended that the newest curriculum should be modified based on the importance of competent teachers and authentic resources, communicative situations for grammar mastery, and ongoing assessment.

Abstract

In Indonesia, English is taught formally from the elementary school level until university. However, Indonesian learners of English face difficulties in producing certain grammatical features accurately, including the simple past tense. This study attempts to describe the common errors made by Indonesian learner of English in their spoken utterances.  The data are obtained through interviews of four Indonesian postgraduate students. The data are analysed based on processes in error analysis. The study reveals that Indonesian postgraduate students still face problems in producing accurate grammatical features mainly on utterances containing simple past tense, plural form, and article ‘the’ and ‘a’. The production of past regular verbs is likely to be less accurate than that of past irregular verbs. The study also reveals that the source of learner’s errors might be due to the interference of L1, intralingual factors such as overgeneralization, incomplete application of rule in target language, and failure in comprehending the whole rule. There are also some possibilities that the errors made are evidence of transfer of training, strategies of L2 learning which enable the learner to communicate effectively during the conversation, and also the learner’s communication strategies.

Abstract

Considering Lucy’s failure in her struggle, this study was conducted to see (1) why Lucy struggles, (2) how she struggles, and (3) why she fails in her struggle. This study was designed by a qualitative research, which intended to describe the data taken from the novel. These data were analyzed using content analysis in the framework of feminist theory of the first-wave and second–wave feminism and feminist theory by Robbins. The result of the study shows that considering Annie’s treatment on her daughter, she is representing the male domination on Lucy. Therefore, Lucy struggles by making her own life which is free from male domination Annie stands with. Her failure happens because she has internalized her mother’s values that she even comes deeper into her mother and men’s domination and emphasizes the male authority on her.
