Abstract

Rice is a major staple food commodity in Indonesia.  It plays important role both as socio-politic and economic commodity. Rice should be available in sufficient amount to all markets; otherwise economic and politic stability well not run well.  In order to fulfill the needs, it should be imported from other countries. This research was conducted to find out alternative local food sources in order to substitute rice commodity as energy and carbohydrate source in Jambi Province. This research was conducted in 2011 and located in four regencies of Jambi Province. The research result showed that 100% research respondents stated that rice still became main staple food as energy and carbohydrate source where they usually eat rice three times a day. In addition, other staple foods that consumed by Jambi people as energy and carbohydrate source were potato, cassava, sweet potato and soybean. There was rarely respondents, or none, that have consumed corn, sago, achira (or canna discolor), breadfruit and arrowroot as their staple food although those kinds of local foods were available around them.

Abstract

Fluctuation on tomatoes’ prices is considered unstable as well as unpredictable due to several obstructions on demands and supply, which are deemed to yield a price volatility. The indefinite and erratic price, in addition, opens a possibility for sellers to manipulate a couple of information related to the price so that consumers will not be transmitted to the price that has been collectively decided by farmers. This research aimed at analyzing the volatility, price transmission, and spillover volatility of tomatoes in Malang and Kediri Regencies, considering both the regencies are the biggest tomato producers within East Java. Furthermore, for data analysis, historical volatility approach was employed to measure the volatility, simple regression of Ordinary Least Square Method to measure the price transmission, and GARCH regression method for spillover volatility measurement. The research, moreover, unveiled that the price volatility, within the context of producers and consumers from the both regencies, increased significantly. In addition, the price transmission also happened to occur between the consumer and the producer prices in Malang Regency as that of in Kediri Regency. Besides, the typical condition also occurred, in terms of spillover volatility, engaging the consumer and the producer prices in both the regencies.

Abstract

Since 1992, domestic soybean production was unable to fulfill national consumption, which led to the import decision by government. Domestic farmers have not been interested in cultivating soybean due to its relatively expensive production costs; despite its output price also has less competitiveness to the imported soybean. One strategy to reduce the dependence of imported soybean is by improving the efficiency of soybean farming . Efficiency of soybean production in this research represents the farmers’ ability in having minimum cost to produce certain level of soybean production. This study aims to analyze factors that affect production costs and to estimate the economic efficiency score. Cobb Douglas Stochastic Frontier Cost Function; then, the best models is chosen using Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and Schwarz Information Criterion (SIC). While, the second objective used actual production cost ratio and minimum production cost ratio. The research finding showed that land lease, fertilizer price, pesticide price, price of drilled wells irrigation, and the amount of output had positive effect to the production costs. Meanwhile, seed price and labor wage had negative effect. In conclusion, farmers still could not achieve economic efficiency, thus, there is a chance to save production cost in order to achieve full economic efficiency.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to analyze the implementation of the Simantri program in Mendoyo Dangin Tukad Village and to analyze the profit level of the Simantri farmers and non-Simantri farmers. The analyses used are descriptive statistics and profits analysis. This study began in the first planting season, which is Januari-April 2016. The sample total is 40 farmers, which consist of 20 farmers joining Simantri program and 20 farmers are not. The non-Simantri farmers are chosen purposively considering similarity among those who join in the Simantri program. The result shows that the implementation of the program in Mendoyo Dangin Tukad runs well. The waste processing of livestock in the village has benefit in reducing external input needs, such as inorganic fertilizer and pesticides. Waste of plants and animals are useful material for raising livestock, increasing land fertility and producing bio-energy. The farmers’ profit earned Simantri program is greater than the farmers who do not participate in the program. The source of the increasing farming profit is coming from reducing external inputs of fertilizer and pesticides used.

Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing technical, cost and allocative efficiency and analyzing the influence of factors to the efficiency farming. The crops chosen for the analysis are rice, corn and soybean. The locations of this study are Jember, Banyuwangi, and Tuban Regency, East Java, Indonesia. The efficiency is measured using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The results showed that the average technical efficiency for rice, corn, and soybean are 0.68, 0.73, and 0.81, respectively. Additionally, cost efficiency are 0.10, 0.12, and 4.55 for rice farming, corn farming, and soybean farming, respectively. This described that improving the efficiency of food farming in Indonesia is imperative. Accordingly, the most dominant factors affecting the technical (TE) and cost (CE) efficiency in rice, corn and soybean farming are land area and extension frequency. Therefore, the policies regarding land management and extension program should become the main attention of government. The program should be performed to address the local problem of production and also marketing of agriculture products in such a way that result in increasing profit and welfare of farmers.
