Abstract

Heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) is responsible for the correct folding of many cellular proteins. Several Hsp90 inhibitors have been developed for cancer treatment. The present in silico study aimed to evaluate the potential of several porphyrin derivatives conjugated with anthraquinone groups as Hsp90 inhibitors by using simulation of molecular docking and molecular dynamics. The binding mode of porphyrin hybrids to Hsp90, which was examined by using AutoDock 4.2, showed that all six porphyrin compounds fit well in the binding pocket of Hsp90. The pi-cationic interactions with Lys58 were exclusively observed in the interaction of each porphyrin hybrid. Stabilities of porphyrin-Hsp90 complexes were confirmed by 40-ns MD simulation, which was carried out with the help of AMBER16. Prediction of ligand affinity by using the MM-PBSA method showed that all complexes were energetically favorable as indicated by a negative binding free energy. The predicted affinities of tris−H2PyP−AQ, tris−H2PzP−AQ, bis−H2PzP−AQ, and mono−H2PzP−AQ are better than those of geldanamycin, a known inhibitor of Hsp90, which shows the importance of the electrostatic and van der Waals energies for ligand binding.

Abstract

In this paper, a new hybrid conjugate gradient method for solving monotone nonlinear equations is introduced. The scheme is a combination of the Fletcher-Reeves (FR) and Polak-Ribiére-Polyak (PRP) conjugate gradient methods with the Solodov and Svaiter projection strategy. Using suitable assumptions, the global convergence of the scheme with monotone line search is provided. Lastly, a numerical experiment was used to enumerate the suitability of the proposed scheme for large-scale problems.

Abstract

This paper proposes two new classes of ratio estimators for population mean when information on a known auxiliary variable is available in simple random sampling. A combined family of ratio estimators for estimating population mean by combining the two new estimators together in order to minimize the mean square error (MSE) is then suggested. The expressions for the bias and mean square error of all proposed estimators up to the first order of approximation were obtained. The performance of the proposed estimators was compared with that of existing estimators using both a theoretical and a simulation study. The proposed family of estimators was found to be more efficient than the existing estimators.

Abstract

Harary and Miller (1983) started the research on the (restricted) size Ramsey number for a pair of small graphs. They obtained the values for some pairs of small graphs with order not more than four. In the same year, Faudree and Sheehan continued the research and extended the result to all pairs of small graphs with order not more than four. Moreover, in 1998, Lortz and Mengenser gave the size Ramsey number and the restricted size Ramsey number for all pairs of small forests with order not more than five. Recently, we gave the restricted size Ramsey number for a path of order three and any connected graph of order five. In this paper, we continue the research on the (restricted) size Ramsey number involving small graphs by investigating the restricted size Ramsey number for matching with two edges versus any graph of order five with no isolates.

Abstract

Spirulina platensis is a microalgae species that contains phycocyanin, a blue pigment that is widely used in the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. The objective of this study was to isolate phycocyanin from dried biomass of Spirulina platensis. The optimum extraction was through freeze-thawing extraction with 0.01 M phosphate buffer pH 7. Purification was done using 50% ammonium sulphate precipitation, dialysis, and gel filtration chromatography. The purity ratio of the purified product was 1.729 (A615/A280). Characterization of isolate, carried out using SDS-PAGE, gave molecular weights of around 15-16 Kda and using infrared spectrophotometry the similarity with the standard phycocyanin spectrum was obtained. Both methods confirmed that the isolate was phycocyanin.

Abstract

In this study, different aerial parts of Monotheca Buxifolia were screened for their antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-oxidant activity. Extract of the fruit was most active against P. mirabilis, MSSA and M. morganii strains. Moreover, the methanolic fruit extract demonstrated good antibacterial properties against VRSA, S. aureus and Acinetobacter. Despite having good antibacterial properties, Monotheca buxifolia showed low antifungal activity. The cytotoxic activity was the highest in the pet-ether fruit extract, causing 60% of lethality against Artemia salina larvae with LD50 at 3.307. The highest scavenging activity was shown by the methanolic leaf extract in a concentration-dependent pattern. The findings of this study suggest that Monotheca Buxifolia has good antibacterial, antioxidant potential but low antifungal properties.
