Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a degenerative disease that leads to increased inflammation and cyclooxygenase protein production, which causes tissue abnormalities. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of caprine CSN1S2 protein against abnormal metabolic pathways in the aorta of DM rats. The twenty-four-animal model was control, diabetes and treatment groups. Histopathological evaluation of the aortic tissue by hematoxylin eosin staining. The expression of cyclooxygenase and inflammatory cytokine was measured by western blotting. In the DM750 groups, the amount of discontinued-endothelial was significantly more reduced than in the other groups. The amount of macrophages in the DM1500- group decreased more than in the DM and DM375 groups. The amount of foam cells in the DM750 and DM1500 groups decreased more than in the DM group and was close to all control groups. The expressions of COX-2 and IL-17 were effectively reduced and vice versa the expression of IL-10 was increased in DM750 compared with the other groups. Meanwhile, COX-1 expression did not change in all groups. This study indicates that caprine CSN1S2 protein at a dose of 750 mg/kg BW has a significant effect on controlling, protecting, and repairing abnormalities in the aortic tissue of T2DM rats.

Abstract

Lithium titanate, LTO, was synthesized by solid state reaction with Li2CO3 and TiO2 powder as precursors. The result was characterized to investigate its crystal structure, phase content, cell parameters, surface morphology, electrical conductivity and its performance as electrode in a lithium ion battery. XRD analysis with Le Bail refinement showed that the prepared materials consisted of 4 phases of Li4Ti5O12, Li2TiO3, anatase TiO2 and rutile TiO2. The surface morphology was still not homogeneous, with an average grain size of 0.533 ± 0.157 µm. When 1% LTO was mixed with graphite and used as anode of an LFP battery, it produced a specific capacity of 130.66 mAhg"‘1 with Coulombic efficiency of 94.2%. When the composition was 5% of the total anode powder, the specific capacity was 118.74 mAhg-1 and Coulombic efficiency was 92.72%.

Abstract

Anthocyanins extracted from purple-fleshed sweet potato were encapsulated using emulsification-crosslinking technique with chitosan acted as polymer and sodium tripolyphosphate as cross-linker. The parameters influencing microencapsulation were investigated i.e. stirring intensity and polymer concentration, pH of polymer and crosslinker solution, and also ratio of anthocyanins extract (core) to polymer concentration by characterizing the properties of obtained microcapsules. Stirring intensity of 1600 rpm achieved microcapsules with smaller mean diameter, narrower particle size distribution, and greater encapsulation efficiency than that of 1200 rpm for each similar polymer concentration. The research revealed that pH of 3.0 gave the greatest encapsulation efficiency and antioxidant activity of microcapsules. However, the different of mean diameter and particle size distribution of microcapsules for all of pH solution variation was not significant. Ratio of anthocyanins extract to polymer concentration 75% (w/w) possessed the greatest encapsulation efficiency, the biggest mean diameter and the widest particle size distribution between all of ratio variation. Meanwhile, ratio of 150% was selected for further analysis (microstructure and FT-IR) because it gave narrower particle size distribution and smaller mean diameter with its encapsulation efficiency was only little different from others ratio. Microstructure analysis by SEM revealed sphere and irregular microparticles. FT-IR analysis revealed that that there was bonding and interaction among anthocyanin, chitosan, and tripolyphosphate ion.

Abstract

This research was aimed at synthesizing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on zinc(II) and a benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (BTC) linker in combination with graphite as anode material in lithium-ion batteries. The MOFs were prepared using sonochemical and solvothermal methods, which led to different materials: [Zn3(BTC)2·12H2O] (MOF 1) and [Zn(BTC)·H2O·3DMF] (MOF 2). The produced materials were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA), and a battery analyzer. Refinement of the XRD data was performed using the Rietica and Le Bail method. Sharp and intense peaks indicated that the materials had a high degree of crystallinity. The morphology of the materials as analyzed by SEM was cubic, with an average crystal size of 8.377 ± 4.276 µm for MOF 1 and a larger size of 16.351 ± 3.683 µm for MOF 2. MOF 1 was thermally stable up to 378.7 °C while MOF 2 remained stable up to 341.8 °C, as demonstrated by thermogravimetric analysis. The employment of the synthesized materials as anode in a lithium ion battery was proved to yield higher specific capacity and cycle stability compared to those using a graphite anode. The lithium-ion battery with 5 wt% MOF 1 exhibited the highest performance with an efficiency of 97.28%, and charge and discharge specific capacities of 123.792 and 120.421 mAh/g, respectively.

Abstract

Global approaches for estimating geophysical model parameters have been proposed by several authors, including their application for gravity interpretation, which is currently limited to simple and fixed geometrical problems. This paper proposes implementation of Very Fast Simulated Annealing (VFSA) in two-dimensional gravity interpretation problems, which are still rarely addressed. The modeling domain was divided into smaller sub-domains and gravity anomaly calculation was carried out based on the Talwani formulation.  To improve the uniqueness of the solution of under-determined problems, specific constraints were added in addition to the assumed known symmetry axes. The inversion of VFSA was tested on synthetic data generated by simple models and on previously published real data to evaluate the applicability of the proposed approach to the interpretation of field data.

Abstract

Fibroblasts and IL-1α are important components of inflammation and healing in dental caries. This healing allegedly could be enhanced by robusta coffee. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of varying concentrations of robusta coffee on IL-1α expression and the number of fibroblasts. Wistar rats were used, divided into 4 groups and 3 subgroups (7-, 14"‘, and 21-day rats) with each group containing 4 animals: Control group: untreated group; 25% Coffee Group: cavities + treated with 25% coffee bean paste; 50% Coffee Group: cavities + treated with 50% coffee bean paste; 75% Coffee Group: cavities + treated with 75% coffee bean paste. The 7-, 14-, and 21-day rats were sacrificed serially for analysis of the number of dental pulp fibroblasts by staining with HE and IL-1α expression by immunohistochemistry. The resulting data were analyzed descriptively and using ANOVA, followed by an LSD test. The higher the concentration of robusta coffee, the more the expression of IL-1α decreased and the more the number of fibroblasts increased. It is suspected that immunomodulatory proteins inhibit IL-1α expression. It was concluded that robusta coffee could decrease IL-1α expression and increase the number of fibroblasts during the healing process in the dental pulp of Wistar rats.

Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic disease of the joints and bones due to trauma or other joint-related diseases (secondary). Synovial inflammation commonly causes disturbance in joint homeostasis, which is associated with OA. Enzymes such as aggrecanase and metalloproteinase generate cartilage damage, mediated by tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) and interleukin (IL)-1. Pro-inflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, are responsible for regulation of the extracellular matrix, cartilage degradation, and apoptosis of chondrocytes. This study aimed to observe the cell viability and expression level of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-1 and MMP-3) and tissue inhibitor metalloproteinases (TIMP-1 and TIMP-2) in human chondrocyte cells (CHON-002) induced by IL-1β. CHON-002 was induced with IL-1β (0.1, 1 and 10 ng/mL) as an OA model. The viability of the cells was measured with a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxyme-thoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetra zolium (MTS) assay, while expression of MMP-1, MMP-3, TIMP-1, and TIMP-2, was evaluated by RT-PCR. The viability of IL-1β-induced CHON-002 (CHON-002- IL-1β) cells at day 1 and 5 showed that treatment with up to 10 ng/mL of IL-1β was not toxic. Expression of TIMP-1 and TIMP-2 in CHON-002-IL-1β was lower compared to control, while that of MMP-1 and MMP-3 was higher compared to control. These results indicate that CHON-002 treated with 10 ng/mL IL-1β has expression patterns consistent with chondrocyte damage, so the CHON-002-IL-1β system may serve as a model for MMP induction in OA.

Abstract

A class of stochastic processes with memory within the framework of the Hida calculus was studied. It was proved that the Donsker delta functionals of the processes are Hida distributions. Furthermore, the probability density function of the processes and the chaos decomposition of the Donsker delta functional were derived. As an application, the existence of the renormalized local times in an arbitrary dimension of the Riemann-Liouville fractional Brownian motion as a white noise generalized function was proved.
