Abstract

Wax prints were the earliest textile prints exported to Ghana by the Europeans. These prints, commonly referred to as African prints, have distinguishing characteristics, with the earlier ones, known as classical prints, exhibiting symbolic patterns largely used by Ghanaians in the 19th and the 20th century. With the newer trends of fashion in the 21st century, the design preference in these special textiles changed from complex symbolic patterns to simple stylized patterns and textile producers adopted more creative ways in designing to satisfy the taste and demands of textile consumers. The purpose of the present practice-based research was to widen the scope of African print designs by creating new designs that incorporate classical and contemporary design concepts. Samples of African prints were observed and the findings led to the development of new designs christened ‘Classicon’. These prints, based on the transitional design approach (TDA), combine the elements, principles and philosophy of both the classical and contemporary designs to create a class of designs that bridge the gap between the two concepts. This study recommends Classicon prints to Afro-centric designers not only to preserve African ethnic patterns but also to update African classical prints to suit current fashion trends.

Abstract

The establishment of modern cottage ceramic industry in Nigeria was the result of changes in taste and demand related to ceramic products influenced by contact with the West. Strategies adopted in transforming Nigerian indigenous pottery to modern ceramics with a mass-production orientation have been featured in several academic publications. However, there has been inadequate academic attention for technical trends in the ceramic industries in Nigeria. This study examined technical trends in cottage ceramic industries in Southwestern Nigeria. Its objectives were to observe styles, techniques and factors that affect the development of these industries. The study adopted studio-practice participant observation and descriptive methodologies. It was observed that most of the cottage ceramic industries in Southwestern Nigeria are using appropriate and intermediate technologies by sourcing their materials, tools and equipment locally. Throwing is the major technique of production used, while painted decorative wares are the dominant products as the cost of producing glaze wares is high. The inability to produce cheaper ceramic wares compared to imported wares leads to low patronage of their products. Improving technical capacities of these industries through various research findings and technological breakthroughs will go a long way to increase the productivity and sustainability of these industries.

Abstract

Since Bandung joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) on 11 December 2015, all its stakeholders and the city have become more active in fulfilling its commitments as a City of Design, among others by strengthening existing data on creative economy entrepreneurs and their impact on welfare improvement. A previous research conducted by the Economy Department of Bandung Municipality mapped thousands of creative economy actors spread over 30 districts in Bandung. However, it was necessary to further identify these actors and their roles in order to be able to build a strategy around creative economy development in Bandung, which was the main aim of this research. The ecosystem of five creative economy subsectors in selected districts was mapped. The results are presented here as a reference for building strategies for creative-potential based community development and policy making.

Abstract

Adaptation of Aesthetic Elements at Form of Sundanese Batik OrnamentsAbstract. Abstract

This paper is an exploration of the increasing trend of popular macho representations on the back of three-wheeled auto rickshaws in the Punjab, Pakistan. Through an ethnographic field research it was observed that the painted visuals of popular icons in clichéd heroic poses are rampant on rickshaws, representing a mobile exhibition of urban folk art. These visuals are mostly taken from the local Punjabi film industry, which has eclipsed over the past two decades. This study further explored the reasons for the increase of male figures displayed on rickshaws (and other) popular art and the almost total extinction of female figures because of increased religious assertion in Pakistan over this two-decade period. Our analysis shows that the relationship between rickshaw drivers and a common male audience with these powerful visuals is so strong that it reinforces the 'impulse to image'. The power of macho visuals satisfies the taste of cinemagoers who love to travel by rickshaws loaded with such visuals. We argue that these macho ideal representations have a strong impact on the beholders and they influence society through the power they convey. Finally, this study concludes that the popular macho visuals effectively communicate real emotions and please the mood of vast audiences in particular segments of society.

Abstract

Nizami is one of the most famous poets of the sixth century. His mystical and romantic stories are full of wisdom. His two stories called 'Haft Peykar' and 'Khosrow and Shirin', which are discussed in this article, have interested artists throughout the history of Iranian art. The painter of the 'Haft Peykar' painting shows the whole story from beginning to end in one single image. The painter of the 'Death of Shirin' painting, emphasizes the paradoxes of life, the confrontation of life and death, heaven and earth, and loyalty and betrayal in the composition, colors and symbolic elements. This study used an analytical-descriptive method. The purpose of this research was to determine how the painters used these two mystical literary texts to express their own ideas. What can be seen from the two paintings is that the artists used the stories of Nizami to create their works with an artistic and mystical visual language, using symbolism in the composition and the colors. It should be noted that the painters also added meanings to their paintings and thus presented new content for the viewer.

Abstract

Hospitalization has a psychological impact on pediatric patients. A hospital is a complex environment, so wayfinding information needs to be provided by environmental graphics inside the building. It is necessary to design informative, communicative and educative environmental graphic design media that use color coding to support child development. The research problem was to create an environmental graphic design (EGD) for a children's hospital that is communicative, attractive and educative and to investigate the role of color coding in the design. A case study was conducted at Hermina Hospital Depok, which consisted of literature study, observation, interviews and questionnaires. Color coding was used as a strategy to differentiate areas and to provide an understanding of the layout of the hospital complex. The purpose of this study was to design an effective EGD for a hospital as a means of information and communication to the visitors, especially children. Another aim was to apply color coding to a complex area.
