Abstract

Tourism research in Thailand is unbalanced, since it largely focuses on western travellers and pays very little attention to Asian tourists, especially mainland Chinese tourists, whose numbers and value are rising year-on-year. The connections between China and Thailand are many-stranded and more than a thousand years old. However, there is very little understanding of what kind of experience Chinese tourists would like to receive and whether they enjoy their visits. This paper reports on a quantitative survey of 250 Chinese tourists in Thailand which investigated the kinds of experience that they received and the degree to which they were satisfied with them. It was found that most travellers, although they no longer are subject to 'zero-dollar tourism,' nevertheless face constant appeals to buy often unwanted products and must accept very low levels of service. Satisfaction levels are, consequently, varied.

Abstract

Urban open spaces are important for improvement in urban living quality. Traditional research on open spaces mainly focuses on spatial forms and visual esthetics to analyze environmental quality, but lacks of adequate consideration regarding acoustic elements. In the field of the acoustic environment, people pay much attention to interior sound quality design and noise pollution. In order to provide a new viewpoint for urban design and to reinforce design methods, herein, the concept of soundscape was introduced. In this survey, the types and the features of lakefront soundscapes, as well as visitors' spatial distribution were observed. 13 pairs of sound and image scenarios were presented to 112 subjects at a tourism city, Hangzhou, China. The sounds and images used were of real settings in lakefront scenic areas. Affective response was measured in terms of pleasure. Through the evaluation on the influence of the interaction between visual and acoustic stimuli on perception of the environment, it is proved that there is a need to identify places where the conservation of the sound environment is essential, due to the drastic impact of the loss of sound quality or its salient informational content on human appreciation, especially in theme spaces, and folk-custom landscapes. Moreover, the coherence between sound and image influences human preferences, since coherent combinations are rated higher than the mean of the component stimuli. As a result, the spatial partition of soundscape is also necessary with the movement of the visual images. Finally, some design guidelines regarding soundscape are proposed with the illustrations of four typical lakefront spots.

Abstract

Bogor Botanical Garden is one of well-known tourism destination in West Java,Indonesia, visited by various users around the world. The increase in demand fornature-based tourism also becomes a trend in urban society. People needs a comfortable, healthy, and sustainable living space to refresh from fatigue and recreate new experience relating to nature. Environmental behavior is crucial aspect raised by understanding (cognitive behavior) and assessment of physical quality of environment (affective behavior). In order to avoid environmental damage, it is necessary to observe the user behavior, to analyze the change of user behavior and formulate the guidelines for formal garden design. The study was conducted in three steps: site and behavior observation, behavior analysis, and recommendation. There was diversity of user behavior in Teysmann Garden in the morning and afternoon. This was driven by various perception and preference in the garden relating to personal and physical factors. The prominent activities in formal garden consisted of sitting, taking picture, and walking, while prominent settings intensively used were pavement lane, pergola, bench, and lawn. Abnormal action was found in lawn, monument, pergola, and bench. The prominent landscape elements or settings could be improved as main character in formal garden in achieving a good interaction between people and landscape as a basis for landscape sustainability of tourism destination area.

Abstract

Ecotourism success would depend on the community readiness to welcome and participate in tourism in terms of their attitudes towards tourism development, commitment, and capacity. These are related with expanding access to natural resources which are determined by the availability of local networks, collective actions, mutual trust, and social norms, which constitute social capital. Therefore, ecotourism as a tool of rural economic diversification requires social capital for its development. This study attempts to identify the relevance of social capital in empowering rural communities of West Java and enhancing conservation education for ecotourism development. The research was conducted in the Districts of Bogor, Sukabumi and Cianjur of West Java, Indonesia. The study employed a mixed method with predominantly qualitative approach to obtain data. Findings indicated that communities with higher social capital have higher potentials to induce ecotourism development through empowering community and minimize risks of environmental degradation through conservation education.

Abstract

Stakeholders in Indonesia have accepted sustainable tourism as the protection and the long use of tourism resources as well as the availability of the resources for current and the future generation. Although such concept has been recognised as a good notion for developing tourism destination, its implementation needs to be investigated. Since 1970s, Toraja has been promoted as one of the main tourism destinations of Indonesia. For this reason, Toraja was chosen as a location for qualitative fieldwork to investigate the conduct of sustainable tourism. This article provides insights about sustainability and sustainable tourism based on the perspective of indigenous people in Toraja. Participant observations and interviews to stakeholders in South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia (specifically in North Toraja and Toraja land) were utilised to obtain information about sustainable tourism. On the basis of traditional cultural practices, Torajanese believe that the way they practice culture is actually a sustainable way. The idea of sustainability links to sustainability tourism which is now being promoted by the levels of government in Indonesia.

Abstract

The main objective of the study is to explore the applicability of the choice experiment method to reveal preferences of visitors. The preferences are related to the attributes of eco-tourism resources in Taman Negara Malaysia. Four alternative sets of combinations of attributes which included types of accommodation, congestion levels, permitted length of stay per permit and entrance fees are given to visitors to choose. The results of the analysis on the probability of choice function reveal that types of accommodation, indicated by differences in room rates, and congestion levels are the two significant factors influencing visitors preferences for the eco-tourism resources. The choice of types of accommodation facilities can be implied to the preferences for quality services and facilities. On the other hand, the congestion level is associated with lower entrance fee and costs of visits.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to examine the extent to which the relationship between the internal service quality (ISQ) and employee satisfaction in a Vietnamese food and beverage service company. Based on the previous studies of Heskett et al, (1997) and Heinhuis et al. (1998), seven sub-measurements of ISQ and three sub-measurements of employee satisfaction are applied in the study. In addition, employee background as personal characteristics is also examined in the relation to employee satisfaction whilst cultural variables are held constant. This formal and descriptive correlational study analyzes data from questionnaire and interview. The results show that there is no significant correlation between employee background (age, education qualification, and length of employment) and employee satisfaction. On the other hand, there is significant correlation between internal service quality and employee satisfaction. Technology job fit, delivering service value, customer response, and supervisory control system are the most important measurements of ISQ, which influence the employee satisfaction.
