Abstract

This research was conducted to analyze the representation of success defined in the song Champion (2017) by Fall Out Boy featuring RM of BTS, which is also using the figure of speech found in the song. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The theory that helps this research is the representation theory introduced by Stuart Hall. This study finds a unique representation of the definition of success in the song Champion (2017) by Fall Out Boy featuring RM of BTS. It was found that the song defines success as success in managing mental health in young people. The song describes the mental health state of young people who continue to have anxiety about the future. The pressure is described as being obtained from the surrounding environment. However, the song describes self-compassion to not be too hard on their selves because the most critical success is mental health. The song represents success in caring towards mental health as more important than the success that is pressured by the surroundings.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to challenge the modernism view and principles by revealing the negative issues and impacts of technology as portrayed in Mosquitoes (2017) play script written by Lucy Kirkwood. The research uses a qualitative method in showing and elaborating the findings. To challenge the modernism view, the research undertaken uses postmodernism lens with Jean Baudrillard’s theory of simulation, simulacra, and hyperreality in analyzing situation and forms of those concepts which are hidden in the text. This research discovers that the advancement of technology makes the characters very dependent on technology itself, especially on computers, mobile phones, and the internet. However, this technological dependence is not accompanied by significant benefits as modernists assert, but rather tends to produce detrimental effects for the characters. The detrimental effect of using technology is that the characters are trapped in a world of hyperreality manifested in the form of fake news and cybercrimes, causing some serious problems that must be dealt with by them since the boundaries between real and fake have collapsed. This cause-effect regarding technology and hyperreality emphasizes a paradox that technology which is supposed to be controlled by humans yet control humans themselves because technology takes a role in shaping the way humans think and behave. In essence, the findings of this research reinforce that the positive view of modernism on advancement in human civilization is not fully materialized.

Abstract

This study aims to discover the psychopath characteristics of the main character, Lucas, as depicted in the movie Dismissed, and investigate how Lucas’ obsession, which makes him a psychopath, is related to the absence of parents. The qualitative descriptive analysis method is used in analyzing the data. Data is collected by watching, understanding, identifying, interpreting, and analyzing data from the Dismissed movie. Thi study uses psychoanalytic theory by Sigmund Freud and psychopathic personality disorder by Robert D Hare. This study reveals that the absence of parents during Lucas’ developmental period can wreak havoc on the manifestation of psychological disturbance in Lucas. Lucas has a psychopathic personality disorder. His psychopathic problem makes him a killer to gain his excessive obsession to get an “A” from his teacher. The writer concludes that Lucas’ psychopathic problem is convincingly connected to parental absence. Lucas experienced imperfect psychosexual development, resulting in fixation at the phallic stage due to the death of his mother and the lack of intense bonding between Lucas and his father as his role model. Lucas becomes a person who has an excessive obsession, has poor behavior control, has no empathy, and has no remorse and guilt. When dealing with trauma and anxiety, Lucas’ ego uses projection as a defense mechanism. He projects the longingness for his mother figure to other women he kills. Therefore, his psychopathic behavior is a means he does to substitute and reduce the anxiety and trauma of parental absence in his life.

Abstract

This article discusses a newly emerging branch of literary criticism, Darwinian literary studies, an approach with a serious ambition to change the landscape of literary studies. It seeks to outline some of the approach’s key contributions, such as explanations of possible origins of narrative and adaptive functions of literature as well as novel ways of interpreting individual works. This piece of writing also explores the controversies surrounding the approach, namely the stance that the approach takes against the postmodernist establishment and the criticism it receives. Regarding both the main ideas and the controversies, this paper seeks to answer and whether or not this approach is useful or relevant at all in today’s modern world.

Abstract

Multifunctionality is a cross linguistic phenomenon. It refers to the linguistic capability of a linguistic form to manifest itself in different syntactic structures that result in different syntactic functions. Treating multifunctionality from a generative perspective, the paper focuses on the different functions of the Hijazi Arabic (HA) maa and contributes to the HA literature by describing these different functions and claiming that they are not instances of homonymy, but of multifunctionality. Those different functions are governed by the different syntactic environments that maa occurs in. Its occurrence in multiple syntactic environments suggests that maa has a feature matrix that includes its morphosyntactic features and their specifications that express the appropriate use and interpretation of a given structure. The findings show that maa may function as a negative particle, emphatic particle, relative pronoun, infinitival particle, conditional particle, interrogative particle, exclamative particle and a particle of inclusion. These uses differ in their syntactic flexibility and rigidity (restrictedness). Although more than one function can incorporate to express multiple senses, the salient point about the different functions of maa is that there is no semantic or syntactic ambiguity between its functions.

Abstract

Code-switching occurs in multilingual cultures where citizens have the right and ability to speak two or more languages. This phenomenon can frequently be seen in the English Medium classrooms in the Sri Lankan state school where English and Sinhala are used interchangeably for classroom practices. This article aims to examine subject teachers’ and students’ perspectives towards the use of English and Sinhala for instruction and learning in English medium classrooms in state schools in Sri Lanka, thus identifying how code-switching impacts on students’ performance. The study used mixed method for data collection. Five English medium teachers of three schools in the Hambantota district in Sri Lanka were interviewed and forty students who are learning the subjects in English medium in five schools were distributed questionnaires. The study used random sampling method for selecting the participants and Thematic Analysis (TA) for identifying, organizing, and interpreting data. One key finding of this study is that most teachers employ code-switching in bilingual classrooms in order to make the students familiarize with the subject matter. Although the majority of students are willing to speak English, as a medium of instruction in bilingual classrooms, students need their teachers to explain the lessons in both media. Although code-switching can enhance a student’s knowledge of a specific subject it does not make the student a better speaker or a writer. The current study has implications for bilingual teachers, students, syllabus, and material designers.

Abstract

The Da Vinci Code Novel is one of the famous works from Dan Brown, it narrates about the conflict between Priory of Sion and the church a long time ago. The novel would show us the sacred of Holy Grail which has been covered and the mystery of the codes. The conflict of faith is something that makes the novel complicated and more interesting to read. a faith is also important in determining people’s life because it is an attitude even though it is not always true, thus it cannot become a standard of truth. The writer uses New Criticism approach to find the main problem and conflicts related to research question. The writer also uses a qualitative method to describe the finding. In the end of the study, the writer finds that The Da Vinci Code novel have several faiths reflected, namely; (1) the last supper painting that breaks people’s faith, (2) holy grail and the secret of Christianity’s faith, (3) the priory of sion as the guardian, and (4) the truth of faith. At the same time, the main problem in the novel is a different perspective on the Holy Grail due to the lack of relevant information and their long-established faith, thus they assume that it is true. We cannot claim either of them was wrong because it refers to their own needs. In fact, there is no absolute truth for human being, it is because the truth we have is only own perspective and it does not apply for everyone.
